I agree that there is a couple of books that can be skipped because they bare no consequences for the rest of the story.Opinions in the fanbase have been mixed. Some people have enjoyed the Heresy being more fleshed out, others miss the days when it was a semi-mythical event that didn't have much to it beyond "Horus rebels because Chaos and fucks the Imperium in the process". As far as skipping books goes, there are many different plot lines threaded throughout the series, so if you're a completionist you're gonna have a bad time. The best advice I saw on this was to pick the storylines that most interest you, read those books, then find summaries of everything else online so that you can keep up on the big plot beats. Skipping the absolute worst books, like Outcast Dead and Battle for the Abyss, isn't gonna hurt you that much, though.
The Damnation of Pythos is another book that can be skipped.
