As someone who has vague recollections of 40k lore, how long does it take to cook up a Custodes? My slightly autistic mind wants to have this be a result of Girlyman wanting more Custodes visible for propaganda's sake. (they've always been active in secret, but the law restricting them officially is finally put to rest around the 2nd siege? Don't quote me on that)

40k was born in the crucible of shit like Heavy Metal magazine and the Arcade version of Battletoads. That's why so much of the old art looks like it came right off an album cover. It was never about left and right (though it did pretty blatantly take shots at Margaret Thatcher back in the day), it was about a dark larger-than-life setting that would allow for both the biggest heroes and darkest villains to shine. It was a sign of the time and subcultures it was designed around. A lot more hair metal than it is now.



The bigger codifications of the setting and its lore came way later, which is why you can find old Rogue Trader shit going on about a Space Marines who have traces of Eldar blood and other similar tomfoolery and why old Noise Marine shit had guitar guns and vehicles that looked like mobile crack parties on top of glorious silliness like the old Tyranid Carnifex.

That's why in and of itself, the Custodes shit doesn't really matter. We've been down this road before. What does matter is the larger implications company-wide. When the reaction of their CM is to blanket block anyone who criticizes their decisions, it's usually fair to assume what one is going to see going forward.

It's still true, depending on the LGS you'll either get guys who worked the 9 to 5 or freaks who hate you. I prefer the 9 to 5 guys over the freaks
