Please pardon the incredibly homosexual mass-reply.

I really likethe Dark Coil series by Peter Fehervari, and I'm reading Fire Caste at the moment. It's excellent, no bolter porn (that's a good thing imo) but just a surreal, grueling space Vietnam story. Reminding me of Apocalypse Now in some ways.
I have not even heard of that one but it sounds pretty cool, love me space doughboys. Thanks!
Carcharodons books by Robbie Macniven
Interesting, I had been thinking of checking that series out since I thought the Carcharodons were kind of interesting in concept in the Badaab Wars. I was a long time Space Marine disrespecter but for some reason the Badaab War stuff made the idea that 'Space Marine = Cool' finally click. Ever since then, I have always found Space Marines that kind of go off the Imperial reservation with out necessarily turning to Chaos to be sort of neat.

Was kind of hesitant to commit to a series but it is good to hear it come recommended.
Graham McNeill's entries are my favorites, particularly Fulgrim and Storm of Iron. I think he's good at humanizing the traitors and making the audience understand their motives, sympathetic or otherwise.
I quite like Graham, I have never loved any of the books he has written as much as I have loved Abnett at his best but on the other hand I have never been irritated by any thing Graham has written like I have been by Abnett when his handlers are not applying the rod to his back. Fulgrim was pretty divisive among the 40k fans I know but (unlike many of the other 40k novels I have read) it kind of stuck with me and I still remember most of the plot and even a few lines of dialogue.
The Word Bearers trilogy is premium bolter porn, overshadowed by Night Lords and Storm of Iron but superior to that awful Black Legion trilogy they never completed (thank god) and fun, it’s just fun, they’re dicks and they have regular workplace interactions while having people turned into building blocks.
The Word Bearers trilogy was a pretty fun read, I generally struggle with reading any kind of 'villain protagonist' so I think that it rather speaks to the quality of the action in the novels that I found it hard to put down in spite of never really shying away from the grim-dork or the Word Bearers being a pack of absolute bastards.
Also fuck the Custodes. Super-Super Space marines as an army concept should have never left the drawing board, although frankly the orginal evil was when they made the Grey Knights the original Super Space Marine faction
This pretty much sums up my issues with Grey Knights, Custodes, Primaris and all the other 'Spacier Marines'.
Space Marines worked really well as the benchmark or high-water mark faction of 40k for decades. I like the idea of Grey Knights and Custodes as high-powered character units similar to the old Assassins Codex but their existence as a regular army kind of undermines the flag ship faction of the series.

It would be like if Battletech suddenly decided that mechs are stupid and shit and started emphasizing aircraft, vehicles and infantry to the exclusion of battlemechs. Sure, your new Battletech in which mechs are the sub-optimal choice might be a perfectly good game and it might even play better than the old game but it kind of stops being Battletech.

I do not necessarily 'HATE' primaris and they are far from being a deal breaker for me but they do cause me a certain level of alienation.

It's only two books and a short story (with a third finally coming sometime next year), which helps a lot on that score. MacNiven really nails how utterly inhuman Space Marines can seem to normal people, especially the Carcharodons. There's a great scene in Red Tithe where a human character sees a Carcharodon putting his omophagea to use on a dead enemy's brain and can't decide who she's more scared of at that point, him or the Night Lords who are currently fucking the place up.

I’ve been playing more Rogue Trader, rolling a commissar to see the other side and you know what I just realized?

No fag shit, my gigachad commissar was referred to as “he” when almost every game with a character creator is using “they” and so far the only gay stuff is based retard Jae bats for both teams. Honestly the gayest thing about this game is GW meddling and not allowing Argenta to be a romance, I mean she’s killed more people than any of my player characters combined so to be honest, she should be the main character and the RT be an option for her.

With one glaring exception, even the portraits are based, even the diverse ones.

“Abelard I have continued the bloodline, inform the men.”
It says something about the quality of the writing that even the game at its most jank, bugged and rushed state, was so good I consider it my personal game of the Year.

It’s a shame Argenta got messed with by GW interference, you can tell her, Ulfar and that knife-eared whore had rules Owlcat had to abide by, whereas the ones not tied to models have so much more freedom in the writing. The assassin chick by virtue of being dlc made after launch criticism feels like a KOTOR 2 companion and she’s mouldable. Might pair my commissar with her to see how that one turns out.
I wished I they made up a chapter for the game instead of using a space wolf. He's not a terrible character by any means and I was happy to have him along but he didn't have much depth to him beyond being an unkillable space Viking.

Or hell, they couls have brought some obscure chapter for this, not like theres a shortage of those. Hell, put the Blood Ravens if ya wanna.

Wait Commissar Chad stache wasn't your first playthrough?
Warp incursions make me want to call the local commissar a faggot and get mercy killed, crashes get bad after two hours into a play session and you level too fast but with Void Shadows installed, I am enjoying it. The next dlc is gonna give you an arbites companion apparently, which is a shame, I wanted a freeboota mercenary and Orks to fight, playing a commissar, I’ve realized good enemies is hard to find.

I’m just shocked I don’t hate any companions, even the black, drunk psyker chick, cause you can have your loyal pitbull (Argenta) blow her head off at any time.

It’s more stable than Space Marine 2 btw, holy fuck that new mission is bad
SM2 hasn't crashed for me yet. Not even with mods.

I generally bring Ulfar, Heinrik, Cassia, and Pascal, and the last one whoever fits best for the mission.
Abelard and Argenta are generally great choices, but Ulfar can kind of do their things, get into melee and bolter stuff.
Prior to him I usually went Heinrik, Cassia, Pascal, Abelard and Argenta.

The black drunk psyker did annoy me at times when she got too mouthy in front of the locals. Girls needs to learn the art of the down lo.

I'll see what the new expansion is, and if Argenta and Ulfar can still go to 200BS/WS with arch militant.
Does strategist still suck ass?

That's not an accurate comparison at all. Literally half the Imperium has been cut off from the Throne World while Tyranids are coming and Necrons are awakening. Guilliman and Lion returning are probably the only thing that has gone right in the last 10,000 years.
I get what you are saying with shit on paper being even bleaker than before, which is why I added the "giant super-threat invasions out of nowhere" to the Fallout hypothetical, but this kinda is the problem I see. On Paper shit is every bit if not more grimdark than before, but the majority of the POV is naturally on the now turbo charged Super Saiyan good guys, who thanks to Jellyman are now even gooder-guyer than before, with the end result being what feels like a watered down and markedly more upbeat and cuddlier version of the original setting even if the footnotes mention how half the setting just got horribly slaughtered offscreen.

Will Ferrell as Fulgrim, using the Ashley Schaffer voice. Seriously, reread “Fulgrim” with this in mind, really sells that book as a comedy.

“I love women, I’ll take that as a compliment.”

“I had a dream about this moment... When I was making love... to my wife Donna. On top a her; powerful thrusts, filling the sultry night air. Heavy breath. My son Gabriel walked in, little boy. My wife sprung out of bed and said "No, Gabriel! Leave!" And I said "No, honey, shut your mouth, let him watch." Let him watch what is being consecrated here. And I want the people to watch what is going to be consecrated here. And I will bring my son down here, and he will watch.”

Honestly I am growing more and more appreciative of Marines Malevolent solely as an unapologetic "yeah we are fucking assholes. yeah we don't want to act all like best fwens with civilians and guardsmen. yeah we will steal fucking anything not nailed down if we need it. we are also fighting a dozen simultanious fucking nightmare hell wars here so stop whining about collateral damage and get the fuck out the way" angle of stripping out all the extraneous fluff from a chapter beyond doing their damn jobs.

Admittedly this is also due to how ridiculous the double standards are with the shit they are vilified for, like i'm pretty sure the Black Templars collateral damaged like a literal trillions in killing some weirdass psycher alien mentioned in footnotes to use one of many over the top examples from big name chapters, so a couple thousand civilians killed in wiping out an ork assault that was already in the midst of slaughtering said civilians should not even be a blip on the atrocitomiter. Hell it even kinda adds to their charm being some of the only spess mehreens who get denounced for shit everyone else does on the daily, thus making their general levels of spite thrown right the fuck back all the more justified.

I'm also fond of the Banana boys but you know what, having this super fuck-off (nearly) unbeatable army of walking WMDs and doing barely dick all with them for large parts of the setting is just turbo retardation. And as @Judge Holden said, not only does Gulliman's return just not feel like its done right, he now suddenly gets these mustard bottle fucks off their ass? They're so cool but whenever they appear I feel a headache coming on.
I'll be the one to say I actually prefer the Custodes secluding themselves on Terra. If you're going to have super-super soldiers you need a reason why they wouldn't show up in every major conflict and wipe the floor with any problem. The less we see of them the more mysterious and legendary they would be. I like the eternal vigil guarding the God Emperor. Obviously the Emperor is their top priority above all else. I can understand why you would want to keep the absolute best of the best in the entire Imperium to guard your one Achilles heel at all times. Planets and humans come and go all the time, but there will only ever be one Emperor. Considering how easily the Palace has been infiltrated before I can understand wanting to keep three hundred of these fuckers guarding the Emperor at all times.

They end up being involved in too many conflicts now. GW has to make them more fallible just so they aren't an auto-win in any conflict, which ends up cheapening them. The story itself is suffering from power creep to try and grab attention. I wouldn't be surprised if we see Primaris Custodes or some bullshit so we can repeat the cycle.

The more I think about it the more I like the Custodes, but mostly as a background thing as you say. "The Emperor has a cult of 10,000 near Primarch-level Super Super Soldier prototypes he was totally not going to replace the Space Marines with after the Great Crusade was done but due to the Emperor intentionally fucking with their brains and his own hubris in not expecting himself to ever be unavailable they basically just sit around protecting his slowly decaying corpse all day, lacking any agency of their own."

That fits my headcanon for the setting more. "There's an even stronger version of the Space Marines but due to the tragedy of the Heresy and the Emperor's hubris they're unavailable to do anything." They should show up in events, like the Tragedy of Prospero, not on the tabletop -- or at least, they should be something like Imperial Agents / Assassins. The idea of an entire force of Custodes ... not sure about it.

There is always this slider of quality to quantity where you sacrifice one for another. Custodians are supposed to be you went 100% quality, sacrificing quantity. Guardsman being the total opposite for example. Which also applies to replenishment.

I could maaaaaybe see them as emissaries to watch over campaigns or possibly leading campaigns, but we are talking general level, not captain level.

Not to mention i vaguely recall the Emperor seeing them as more than warriors, but also artists and philosophers. Sending them to fight on the ground goes against that idea too.

Cant comment on grey knights, but dont think they have huge numbers to break the quality vs quantity slider i mentioned

Got tired of having no scythes in the Tyranid army since those are unironically badass.
No 3D printer as too technologically inept. So I made my own, actually turned out pretty well in my humble opinion. Problem is he's fucking massive now.

Also speed read the '40k isn't grimdark anymore' stuff. I dunno, in the same way everything being positive makes it boring, everything being horrific does the same. You need to have hope to have it squashed you know. If they handle the primaris and the new age stuff as the peak before another fall, it's no worry at all.

I like that idea of making them a supplement instead of a force of their own. Lorewise I don't think it makes sense that an entire detachment of Custodes would be engaged in open warfare. From what I've seen they mostly act as agents since even one or two of them is enough to win battles. They seem to be less interested in digging trenches and more interested in the wider conflict. The range is pretty small (and old) as it is. If GW doesn't even want to support them as an independent faction why not?
