There is a sweet spot. For example:
Airbrushes do 2 things great. Speed painting base colours and priming. The more points, the more cost effective priming is. If you dont paint enough or dont give a fuck enough, then dont bother. I use a decent tank with cheap brushes bEcause fuck paying for a good brush. Thats my sweet spot. I got it because painting gold on 3k points custodes would take a long time vs an airbrush. The 5k of sisters I have will be primed with it.

If you can justify it without being a retard, its fine either way imo. Make your purchases work for you.

That said, the DnD fad with normies has past, and WotC has burned all the old fans chasing short term gains and pandering to the "modern audience". So much so that the game about exploring dungeons and killing dragons is about gay dwarf baristas and mexican orcs going to prom
I wouldnt say its the "modern audience", so much that WoTC has gotten retarded and assumed that D&D can be turned into other things. When, at its core is very limited high tier fantasy, but they tried to make into a social RPG, then tried to make it a heavy heist RPG an so forth.

Dear god you do not need a £150 Harder&Steenbeck airbrush for miniatures. Even those $70 non-japanese made Iwata neos are overkill.
Unless you are Sergio Calvo Rubio and are painting your 57th consecutive golden demon entry, a no-name $30 airbrush with a 0.3 mm needle and regular gravity-fed cup will do. Single actions are rare these days so it's guaranteed you'll have a dual-action trigger.
Just make sure you buy a sturdy compressor (with tank, stay away from those shitty compact ones) a moisture trap and regulator valve. There will be an adjustment period where you figure out the right pressure (hint: it's really low), paint dilution and distance to your model to get the desired effect.

About fucking time, I've been waiting for the new models
Those are their HH helmets. But yeah, SW were on the roadmap during their last preview at LVO. It was the art piece in silhouette that people identified real fast. Will probably be after the other specific chaos god legions though.
It's like the whole "You've gotta buy an airbrush" and "you gotta get a 3D printer" debates. "You'd save money if you just bought at airbrush. You can get a good one for £150, just get that, a fan, and some thinners and you'll save loads of money!". A rattlecan is £10. I need, what, 3 or 4 colours of spraypaint. A single rattlecan can do a whole army with paint to spare. I live in Britain where it rains half the time, and rains the other half, and even I can wait for clear weather to do some spraying. The cost just isn't worth it.
Nah. There's even a cheap "good" brand now that goes by the name of Gaahleri. An Iwata HP CS Eclipse is $170, a Gaahleri with swappable paint cups and the .35mm and .5mm nozzles and needles is $45 and just as smooth to operate. Even the cheapo chinese no name airbrushes work but I got a gaahleri on a black friday sale($30 I think at the time?) to act as a beater I was only going to be priming with and realized how well it works. Rattlecan priming is obviously fine, but airbrushes don't have to be stupidly expensive these days.

So I wanna throw this out there to see how many people agree, but honestly I looked into it and I’ve gotta say that I think necromunda may be the best game system as far as releasing amazing looking models on a consistent basis. Like every week when they show off a new character or something it’s always been stellar. The redemption prophet, vandoth, and even past ones I remember like ripperjacks not to mention malstrain.

Necromunda would be amazing if units for each of the factions weren't spread over multiple books i.e. ash wastes.

There is a very standard compressor with tank (AS-186) that 90% of companies sell with their label slapped on the side. They all come from the same factory. Amazon sells it. If you're in Aus, ask me for an ebay recommendation because there is a guy in Vic selling it and a cheap .3 airbrush for 140+10 delivery AUD which is very competitive with amazon pricing.

As my friend has said, cheap airbrushes is all you need. I use the cheap one my tank came with and a trigger airbrush (Bucasso). Gaahleri ive seen with decent reviews. I will caution that a lot of them seem to be astroturfed or bought reviews. But at the cost, its still worth it. It does appear they are trying to give decent quality for price. You just need an airbrush to push paint through.

I cannot stress enough how much of a time saver it is for base coats. 3k points of Custodes all in gold in 2 hours, including me learning. Imagine trying to 2 thin coats that many points. Spray and forget. Ive yet to do priming, but as i mentioned earlier I have 5k points of Sisters to prime, plus another 1k in imperial agents.

Vehicles and terrain are the other benefits. Ive done a single Rhino for my custodes and it legit took 5-10 mins. Im not far away from getting a 3d printer (Bambu A1 most likely) for base toppers and terrain. Terrain, like vehicles, has large surfaces to cover. Fast and no brush strokes.

Invest in yourself. For me $150 saved legit 20 hours of painting and I intend to use it a lot more. If you enjoy 40k for hobbying, it (and probably a 3d printer) is a no brainer. Just be smart with your buys.

Does anyone here play the new Killteam? How is it? My buddies and I played the shitty 2018 version a lot but stopped. I've been trying to get them into Mordheim and Heralds of Ruin but neither is appealing to them, but they've talked about the new edition of Killteam. I have some of the metal kasrkin and that sick anniversary model they put out a year or two ago.

I feel like GW is missing out on not having larger scale minis available. RPG's are seeing somewhat of a resurgence thanks to things like critical role so something like Inquisitor would be in a prime position to make a come back. I remember when they released the lastest edition of blood bowl and they had conversion video after conversion video released showing you how to make teams from the existing range.
Well they have wrath and glory which sucks by the way it's a 40K rpg for people who don't like RPG's.
Only war Dark Heresy and Rogue Trade were better rpgs but I don't think fantasy flight .
will work with them again after they screw them over because they started making star Wars Rpgs.
Which is really annoying because all of my only war campaigns have to Create specialists advanced classes for the commissar.

Generally speaking just get some scrap lumber a bit of resin or how even small rocks and super glue.
My job's construction mainly so I have a bunch of random bits of pieces of metal random plastic and other such junk I make terrain out of I've gotten pretty creative a bit of paint a multi tool and a bunch of nailed together wood make some pretty convincing stuff.
Also don't discount just using straight up mortar and stamping it with concrete stamps kind of heavy though

I bought the Battlefield Trophies kit and I gotta say, this is shockingly fun and creative, weird from modern GW but it’s good. The Servo Skulls are the highlight, no debate.

But some of the Space Marine helmets/heads just need a ball joint slapped on the bottom to become proper headsculpts, which are gonna be amazing for chaos conversions.

Every faction is covered for the most part, even trendy ones like the Navy Breachers, only one exempt are EC for obvious reasons. There’s even a guardsman helmet bit which is just begging to be on everything but a guardsman.

Worst ones are the Sisters heads, very little damage, their helmets are boring and there’s no real “this is a trophy” vibes for any.

Does anyone have any opinions of Warhammer Underworld? And related to that, Warcry?

I saw Warhammer Underworld at the local GW and find the idea of a boardgame-ised version of Warhammer interesting. Mainly because I might get to actually play it occasionally.

As for Warcry. I might be mixing it up with another game (mordheim?), but I heard of it about a year ago as the best game GW every made until it was cancelled shortly after release and now lives on as homebrew PDFs by the faithful. I also heard it was a great source of terrain, since the game was vertical, a singe starter box can with enough terrain to fill a full 40k table if you stretched it. But attempts to buy the terrain these days resulted in scalped prices. I say this, because my local GW has a starter set at RRP.

This is exactly what I was talking about in my post. "Airbrushes are cheaper than spray paint" quickly fails when you take all the things you need into account.

I thought metalics via airbrush or spray resulted in a glitter effect?

There's a new killteam? Last kill team I heard of was the one that came with space marine scouts and was perpetually sold out due to scouts being meta in 40k at the time.

Yes and no. No if you're just buying normal spray paint, yes and quickly if you're paying $20 a can for GW's shit, and of course it's also going to depend on how much you're actually painting.

Any decent metallic paint that doesn't look like glitter when applied with a brush(like shitty craft paint) can go through an airbrush with a reasonable nozzle and needle size just fine. Same with enamels and lacquers that scale model painters have been using with airbrushes for ages. Another couple of hobbies that uses a lot of metallics and airbrushes, weird as it may seem is people who make fishing lures, and fish taxidermy(Badger Airbrushes heavily markets to both of these with hardware and paint).

And then of course there's being able to use literally whatever color you want as a primer or on top of it to quickly basecoat minis, do panel highlighting on vehicles, etc.

Sub $50 airbrush, $150 compressor that probably comes with a hose, and $10 if it didn't... it's not super expensive. A fan with a dryer hose into a 5 gallon home depot bucket can help with the dust as well if you don't want to just do it outside or get a spray booth(again, another $100 or less.) that should leave you under $300, can also still use the spray booth with a rattlecan, and never have to be at the mercy of the weather again plus having another painting tool in your arsenal. Can even varnish that way as well avoiding paying for more rattlecans.

Definitely Mordheim. Warcry is still supported, and while Mordheim is now dead it was supported by GW for years and now has a dedicated community that holds it together and comes up with new stuff. Very cool, probably the best game GW has ever put out even if it benefits from some house rules. The Fin who helped write the rules is the same guy thats helped write rules and lore for Trench Crusade, which is very Mordheim inspired.

That might be shadow war or something like that which feels like a real throw back, an abortive attempt at Kill Team which was replaced by KT2018 pretty quickly.

Yeah there’s a whole new release where they’re making Kill Teams like MTG tourney rules and abandoned legacy teams from the 2021 version. It’s all “These models will have the latest updates for tourneys and we will abandon updating the rest at a set time.”

Such bullshit. Anyway I still have 2021 rules and stats for the KTs and he’s some homebrew rules for some models.

The rules seem kind of gay but I do like that they come out with new teams/minis so often. Was really surprised by plastic kasrkin and have fingers crossed for plastic steel legion

Retributor Armour through the airbrush didnt give me a glitter effect at all. Plus it gets a reikland wash anyway. Heres my notes from research and testing.

2 tins of paint = 24ml
24ml vallejo airbrush thinner
6ml vallejo flow improver
20psi

I cant remeber if i was working off a ratio or not, i just measured it as easily as I could. Towards the end i was blasting at 30-40 for further testing but cant remember of it was better or not. That ratio is probably standard for non-metallics too. I use citadel paints for ease, no other reason. Dont use citadel air, just get the normal one and add thinner, its far cheaper.

Priming needs bigger than .3 but I havent researched it too much as the priming is a little while away.

Citadel colors are pretty shitty for airbrushing: too thick, require too much watering down, the paint is terrible to get out of the pots.
Get Vallejo paints: dropper bottles, paints are usually thinner from the start, require less thinning down and are easier for airbrush use, even the metallics. I use mostly Vallejo for my knights and sometimes Tamiya.
