There’s even alternate schemes for each legion, if anything, the historical narrative keeps out “those people” because their rainbow marines won’t fit.
Speaking of Rainbow Marines and my own autistic theory catalogue, I lowkey suspect there is some connection between the peak of 1st Edition Spess Mehreens that were the Rainbow Warriors and the Marines Malevolent based entirely on how suspiciously similar their symbols are.

My best guesses are either...
  1. they both split off from the same unknown Legion/Chapter
  2. the Rainbow Warriors got sick of being taunted for being called the Rainbow Warriors by fellow Space Marines, the Inquisition, the Administratum, the Guard, Local PDF forces, the Tau, the Slaugth, and the Zoats among others and decided to totally rebrand with the most edgy name and persona they could think of without being declared heretics to forcibly shake off all cringe memories of their past
  3. the Rainbow Warriors exiled their most asshole members into a new chapter
  4. the Marines Malevolent exiled their most...uh....don't really think they ever got assigned a personality back in the Rogue Trader era but lets just go with "friendly" for cheap comedic contrast....so yeah their most friendly members into a new chapter

Don't mean to shit up the thread with non-tabletop discussion but has anyone here played the rogue trader game? I respected the effort to create the opportunity to become heretical in the story but for the life of me I couldn't bring myself to do it. Not only because I'd probably care about the imperium in my character's shoes, but a lot of the choices you get to be evil are absolutely ridiculous to the point that someone would put a bullet in your brain RT or not. Your predecessor literally gets domed by the sister of battle in your party for having ONE heretical item

Counterpoint: Blackshields.
That doesn’t hold up and you know it.

Blackshields are obscure, not in the base rules and weren’t in the launch for 1.0 and 2.0, they’re like 40k Deathwatch, their army status precarious and subject to the whims of whoever’s masterminding the current edition.

Their transfer sheet isn’t even in the shop.

My problem with 30k is that there is no room to make your own guys. Its just psuedo historical bullshit with zero creativity.
In addition to what others have already said about 30k in particular, I take issue with your underlying premise that Historicals don't have any room for creativity. Not everything about historical wargames or their pseudo-adjacent kin like 30k is just trying to recreate certain battles exactly. In fact, I'd argue that's really the minority of games.
You can, and many people do, play a game like Bolt Action, Saga, Baron's War, Chain of Command, etc. and never use real life regiments or people, or even battles. And even if you do, there's still tons of room for creativity and freedom. Not everything is reenactment and recreation.

And? Just because they weren't in the launch doesn't mean it's not valid. Blackshields got a way better army design than Shattered Legions and the use of Inductii. You even have a named Character, something the Salamanders don't even have, and a lot of legions are still missing Praetors. Blackshields are something GW like, and that's why they didn't get an inital release.

30k
Reveal looks really cool. I spotted an old release box the other week and was tempted. But its a lot of models to paint. If it wasnt for backlog and more importantly, another game mode with limited to none interchangeability, I'd probably buy in.

40k
I gotta admit, after looking at Space Wolves combat patrol a little more (and their codex) the space viking aesthetic is starting to grow on me. The sculpts look really nice and definitely put their style on the space marine bodies. Might pick up a box or two, big maybe though. The wulfen look stupid though.

Completely unrelated. I forgot to mention last post. There's also clickbait videos talking about 40ks "secret 5th Chaos god". I assume it's the rat from AoS? Google says it's "Malice", which I've never heard of and GW doesn't use any more.
Malice, or Malal, was a pretty sweet idea tbh. A Chaos god that was opposed to everything, including the other Chaos gods. I dont remember the exact details but he was t god of anarchy I think and he had a cool chapter that worshipped him, the Sons of Malice. They havd a black & white quartered colour scheme and are on-sight with literally everyone else in the galaxy.

It's just old lore though, not a secret. I've also been getting the exact same 40k slop recommendations.

Sounds like you might be seeing "lore" channels that are entirely full of shit while being gay with aids
And because it's on a TV, there's no way to tell YT to stop.

So what if salamanders become lame and gay, just play your shit. 99% of the people who run their mouths online like this will never have the balls to say it to anyone's face.
There are two reasons.

First, it's that there's no winning. I went into this a bit a while back when talking about slop YouTubers like Inner Circle, but it gives the impression that people hate the hobby. There's a lot wrong with GW, but it seems it gets lost in the noise, or I'm just the odd man out and should shut up.

"OMG GW! 15 models for £100! Let me slurp your cock more and ask for seconds for granting us such a quality bargain!" meanwhile I'm here with my £40 box of 30 bolt action figures, only to turn around and see them screaming a storm because a faction they don't like continues to exist.

Second, because I've not had a 40k game in over a decade, in part because I had the audacity to play factions people hate. (Space Marines and Tau)

So yes, as someone who would turn up at table after table, and get turned down for a game with excuses like "everybody plays space marines" and "tau are easy to beat I just march across the table and get into melee." and "Tau don't belong in 40k". Yeah, I care.

A lot of these loretubers are just wiki readers
Yes. They aren't even good at it either.

There was one video I tried to watch. Giving a summary of all 254 canon SM chapters. I gave up pretty quick as it was very low effort. Clearly reading a wiki and not even bothering to proof read it. Even getting basic shit wrong.

On the topic of HH, one video I saw complained that it's getting a refresh every 3 years now, and books that came out just a few months ago are now useless. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't getting away from that part of the reason HH was popular in the first place?

Since I want the current age of darkness box for the minis, I wonder if buying the books used and having that edition locked down would be worth doing?

I've never seen that happen to a space marine or tau player. But like I said, I've never seen anyone with the balls to say the shit they'll rant about online to anyone's face. The space wolf memes will get talked about in the game store, but I've never seen it happen to anyone's face in a game. If I remember right, you're in bong-land(especially referring to prices in pounds in this post), shit sounds fucked over there.

Outer circle, but sure. The thing is though, he is NOT in the hobby for 40k. I watched a few of his videos, but then caught one a year or two ago where he whined about a non GW event and the tournament organizers screwing him over, but somehow it was entirely GWs fault and not that it was just a local retard, and that he hadn't played or bought anything for 40k in damn near a decade, after already noticing the guy doesn't pay attention to the lore.

Doesn't play. Doesn't paint. Doesn't read lore. Doesn't play the video games or participate with anything 40k related other than running a 40k channel to complain. He isn't in the hobby.

Northern Exile and his channel people write laughably stupid stories for, doesn't play 40k(he quit fairly recently and switched to OPR is my understanding). Claims he doesn't paint 40k. Doesn't even read up on the current lore in any way(he's said so much wildly wrong shit in his videos its kind of absurd), and the background gameplay in his videos is kinda bad but at least he plays the videogames I guess? Barely participates in anything 40k related. May as well be the same as Gamza(who as of a few months ago wiped his channel again) , that discourse miniatures tranny, warhammer man studios, and plenty of other people with youtube channels do not, never have, or quit engaging in anything 40k related years ago and they only exist to bitch about it. So yeah, there's a lot of noise but it isn't worth listening to. No this doesn't mean I suck GWs cock either, I fully acknowledge when they fuck up and I've also suggested just buying recasts at least twice in this thread(including when I told you to find another place to buy characters and other shit from so you aren't paying for $40 for a single character mini), among many other instances here of pointing out how shit their pricing/boxes are for epic(most boxes making you buy crap you don't want to get the thing you were interested in quickly ramping up the cost for a full list into absurdity), the bullshit prices for the app and their stupid books, and so on. The complaints from people who actually play the game and spend money on it current year are not the same as the complaints from people(youtube, reddit, dakkadakka, etc.) who haven't actually touched it in ages.

On the topic of HH, one video I saw complained that it's getting a refresh every 3 years now, and books that came out just a few months ago are now useless. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't getting away from that part of the reason HH was popular in the first place?
It was popular because it wasn't 8th edition or later(so 7th but minus a lot of the retarded jank that plagued 7th), and supported the space marine circle jerk. Yes the mechanicum, custodes, and solar auxilia(guard) exist but 90% of the playerbase doesn't touch them and I actually have seen games refused due to someone wanting to play custodes.

Since I want the current age of darkness box for the minis, I wonder if buying the books used and having that edition locked down would be worth doing?
Don't know. Damn near everything I hear about playing games in the UK seems like a dumpster fire one way or another(not just from your posts). In the US unless you've already got a friend group dedicated to playing HH 2.0, who have said they won't move onto 3.0, that probably wouldn't work as people will inevitably move onto the newer thing(and just continue to use waha, newrecruit, etc. instead of buying the books they don't want to pay for).

To be fair, Macca hasn't really been involved in 40K since 30K took off. His content is more focused on 30K with the occasional finger pointing at GW in general. Before they started dropping Horus Heresy versions faster than they do some 40K codexes, his 30K stuff was a good resource for list building etc. He's dropped the odd hobby video from time to time, but its mainly relegated to his Instagram (he's pretty good). I wouldn't call him a 40K channel, but you'd be justified in thinking it was if you'd only watched his content for the past year or so.

If you're a Heresy player you've got every right to complain. The game died with Alan Bligh. There hasn't been a good campaign book since 2016 and even when the rules team has FAQs spoon fed to them from people that actually play the game, they still manage to fuck it up.

If anyone is looking to get into 30K now I would advise getting hold of the old black/red books, getting the fan-based errata and using the new minis plus whatever legion specific FW stuff you can find before they shitcanned it (or use 3D printed bits). 2.0 was a clownshow, and 3.0 doesn't look too promising either.

Jesus christ why is Endymion such a faggot? He puts blocks of text on screen and then has them wiggle around constantly, who the fuck does that?

also, it's fucking reddit. People being planted into their community, paid shills involved in slandering people, reddit admins doing arbitrary shit because of wrong-think. There's nothing new about this. As mentioned in the tabletop community watch thread, they didn't gatekeep their community that they tried to host on reddit, this is the inevitable result. Moving to discord is just going to result in people mass flagging their discord server because the people who hate them won't stop until they're gone or something else pops up that they deem "worse".

I’m not saying they aren’t valid, I’m just saying that their use as a point of entry for “those people” isn’t strong. It’s a faction that requires creativity, has one dedicated kit and the biggest thing is how much work they require.

I wanna do a Blackshield warband once my EC are done.

I like the idea of even more fucked up Inductii whose bodies are probably kept together by the armor, Nemesis-style.

There's an increasingly large amount of 40K audio fanfiction out there on YouTube and a lot of it is very good. I may be biased but:
Not just the story but the ambient music in the background. The channel (The Emperor's Voice) is barely known at this point, a very new channel, and it was a hell of a find.

Malal, Malice from WHFB and he goes along with Kaleb Daark. It's some shit from I believe 3 parts of comics(with the 4th being cancelled) that were part of some annual GW books from '84-'86? I might be off by a year or two on that. But yes, 40 fucking years ago. There was some contractual nonsense between GW and the artist and writer so they left and took their IP with them, and GW has basically done fuck all with it since(in 4 decades) other than people assuming the Sons of Malice have to do with them because of this back in third edition(2nd CSM codex) and a couple other vague mentions here and there since.

Sounds like you might be seeing "lore" channels that are entirely full of shit while being gay with aids(the type that can somehow drop a youtube short every month about the missing legions and such, with no actual info about them). The 5th chaos god could have been The Emperor(The Dark King, but he got talked out of it), Vashtorr is trying to ascend(but hasn't yet), and Constantin Valdor got named as The King in Yellow living in a pocket dimension of custodes and winged vampire space marines but he was only named and it wasn't proven he was even there yet(still waiting in the third bequin book for this).

edit: Wagner and Grant were the ones that managed to keep the IP for Malal and Kaleb Daark(cringe name...) from GW.
Malal is the god of destruction, specifically of Chaos's tendency for self destruction. He's the reason they can't get along, why they fight each other as much as their opponents. Blood flowing? Obsession? Disease? Plotting? All of the those pale in response to the one true calling: They all are helpless to stop playing the great game; helpless before the urge to tear down what the others have built, even when it doesn't get them any benefit to do so. He is the circle in the Chaos star, the one who all other Chaos forces are fleeing from. Whenever anyone cries out for Justice -- for something wrong in the world to be destroyed -- Malal is listening.

In 40k, the "Sons of Malice" used the same exact color scheme (black and white quartered) as the comic book. In one localization (German?) they're even called the Sons of Malal instead of Malice, too, although maybe that's just GW using the German word for Malice in the comic back in the day, who knows? The SoM weren't chaos per say, they were a bunch of pretty standard Space Marines who had some newbie karen Inquisitor show up and start trying to throw her weight around. She burst in on them doing a fairly typical Space Marine ritual after combat, eating the dead -- they literally have an organ that makes that useful for them -- freaked out, and rather than dealing with her demanding to speak to their manager, they just dragged her over to the altar and ate her alive, IIRC.

But, well, you can't kill the inquisitor daughter of high lord or whatever without consequences, so they were declared excommunicate traitoris or rebellious or whatever. Last I heard they're not Chaos affiliated CSM, but rather CSM that basically got fucked over by the Imperium being stupid, so they just hate everyone and want everyone to fuck off and leave them alone.

In modern GW, they replaced him with Be'lakor, who they unequivocally can claim to own. He's not nearly as cool.

I thought about making a lore channel that just makes shit up. A lot of these loretubers are just wiki readers and lazy niggers that haven't picked up a book.

Lost legions? Fuck it, I'll name 'em. Fifth chaos god? Heres an AI generated picture of him. Female space marines? I'll just cite a piece of fluff from White Dwarf that never existed. New xenos race coming to 11th? I'll potato cam some Stargrave sprues.

The fandom is full of window lickers so I reckon you could easily milk it by just blatantly lying.
You could mix them up. "The lost legions were female, the Emperor put one of them down because she got pregnant and the other becuase she negotiated a peace accord with the Eldar instead of wiping out a craftworld he sent them after."

Although there was a lore video that did a bit of a deep dive on the lost legions -- there's just enough stuff in the lore that we can figure out what likely happened, although officially there's no answer (and never will be until they need a huge shocking swerve for a new edition sometime). They were lost during the 3 Rangdan Xenocides.

Tl;dr: The Imperium fought a war against some xenos race with mind control powers that was enslaving humanity via a virus. One of the Primarchs landed in their region and was brainwashed before they could be picked up by the Emperor. The other helped purge those xenos with the other primarchs but was infected with the virus -- and there was no cure, so they had to purge him and huge chunks of his legion.
