Now that one is from the king shitty black library writing, but describing heavy boots is not the caliber of description of an "angel of death" either.
Andy Hoare, Masters of the Hunt, Hunt for Voldorius, Chapter 2,
This is getting out of hand! there are now 2 examples were it has happened! But always look to Goto when looking for examples of being lazy.
Ok, so the guy is also wide. Again, not very fucking descriptive of an angel of death if this is the first description you get about a character.
There character here doesnt even have a great view of said space marine giving that he can only see a black outline. Also over 2 meters tall and 2~ meters is very different then just "over 2 meters tall'

But even if we include "well over two metres" (which still isn't very good), or describing an ork at "over two metres" or frankly anything the hell else as I said, it's not a very good description because even "well over two metres" is again still within the height range of humans you can encounter in public. The one mentioning "at well over two metres eighty" not a specific height but in few words establishes that they aren't talking about a normal human.(there's probably duplicate entries in this because I can't be bothered to have sorted the database and I don't care enough to do so). It's also first matches in a book, rather than every match in a book.
So now we are just going to site every single time "over two meters" how ever written? Outside of the context or other descriptions around them? Thats laughable.

Maybe take your own fucking advice?
But I'm not bothered? I could litigate this all week if youd like.

English, do you speak it? What the fuck does this mean?

If you can't figure out the context of some of those is regarding a space marine based off if the title or anything else included... holy shit. Maybe you've just given an example of why that as a description isn't very good?
But I'm not bothered? I could litigate this all week if youd like.
Litigate? This isn't a court of law. Words have meanings, but I shouldn't be surprised you have an issue with this when the discussion is about usage of words and your quantum state of having read or not read novels. But you wanted citations to support a simple fucking observation, I was able to quickly pull it up after looking for an add-on to do so, there's your citations. It's still shitty writing. I'm not going to go re-read or even sift through a dozen plus fucking novels just to satisfy your need to white knight for black library authors. Especially when you have so much trouble just reading replies as it is.

*The character in this citation doesnt have a perfect view of the space marine, as he can only see an outline. So the only description he could give to what he is seeing is the possible loose dimensions of the figure. Even then Saying some is over 2 meters tall and almost just as wide is completely different then just saying something is "over 2 meters tall."

Well the context would be if the "over 2 meters tall" bit is the only descriptor since that is the core of the problem. So yes we would need the context seeing how most descriptions come from perspective as opposed to a omniscient narrator. In a vacuum "over 2 meters tall" may not be a good description. But if its grouped with 5 other details, or the narrator is in a situation where giving vivid description isnt particularly appropriate.

This is the court of the kiwi farms and you will show RESPECT for the court. But as it stands you were annoyed about a trend, and 2 points does not make a trend my friend. I cant believe you would sit here and make thinks up about black library authors while you could be making fun of Carcharodon primaris surfboards!

And that's one example. Yet there are many where this is not the case.

So then fucking look them up. If you can't do so with the titles and authors, that's your problem. No, not every instance comes with much else. It's also not an intimidating way to describe an ork either. Again, if I can turn on the TV and see these "well over 2 meters tall" transhuman uncanny ubermensch playing sports, that's not very fucking intimidating or even unrelable then is it? Which was the point of the comment to begin with.

"2 points does not make a trend" There's around what, 3 dozen, maybe more results from that search?(as I said there could be some duplicate entries I just can't be bothered to double check) What fuck do you mean "2"? You're incredibly bad at this reading thing.

And that's one example. Yet there are many where this is not the case.
But you cant cite them! convenient!

So just using the phrase "over 2 meters" at all is bad? regardless of the context it's in? That's laughable! Also you don't know the context of any of those statements as you've said above.

So now I did cite them? But that's after not? Once again, can't make up your mind about text that your eyeballs have or may not have seen\ within the space of a single fucking post.

Youre the one making the claim buddy! sorry!
Yes, I am! I can indeed turn on the TV and watch professional sports and see athletes well over 2 meters tall on a regular basis or even at the fucking mall when going shopping.

When it's in the context of describing a space marine, ork, or anything else that's supposed to be superhuman(or even inhuman yet still humanoid) and intimidating yes it's shitty writing. I've stated this repeatedly but the quantum state that is your reading comprehension seems to have difficulties with this.

Well you cant directly cite them, your citation is essentially a google search and saying "look there it is".

Youre the one saying its prevalent that space marines are described as just "over 2 meters tall" and that being the only major descriptor. Youre the one making the claims, so you should be the one to prove it. As opposed to saying "just heckin read my google search results", Your sports comment also doesn't have much to do with anything really, Doesnt the nba only comprise of like 5000 people or something?

Will if youre sensitivity is just using that phrase without the context of anything else is enough for you to say bad writing, Id care to wager that you might be a little over sensitive, or perhaps over literal.

I did, and then you decided they didn't count. So why would I continue providing more context?
Youre the one saying its prevalent that space marines are described as just "over 2 meters tall" and that being the only major descriptor
No, that's not what I said. I said
Just like so many black library authors wanting to describe a space marine as being imposing by describing them as "over 2 meters tall", while failing to realize they're just describing them as NBA players.
Which is true, and it was enough that it stuck in my head for me to comment on it. I think it's shitty writing.
Youre the one making the claims, so you should be the one to prove it. As opposed to saying "just heckin read my google search results",
I did, then you claimed that even with the context it didn't count. Also, google search results?
But because I looked around and found a plugin for this shit.
Screenshot 2025-09-01 113856.webp
Plugin for google? Does that look like any google search results? It's the Quality Check plugin for calibre. I didn't state the name of the plugin or app, but I did mention using a plugin and database. What the fuck does google have to do with anything?
Your sports comment also doesn't have much to do with anything really, Doesnt the nba only comprise of like 5000 people or something?
The NBA was one example, other examples have been given with other sports in this thread as well as other levels of basketball play. But let's go with this 5000 number(even if it's wrong but you used it so we're going to go with that). That's one NBA player for every 1.62 million people on Earth currently. Unfortunately there's no hard number on how many humans there are other than "many trillions" and(some claims of quadrillions but again GW doesn't understand numbers). If there's around 1000 chapters of 1000 space marines, that's 1 million. I think maybe 5 trillion humans could qualify as "many". That's 1 space marine for every 5 million humans making them only 3 times rarer than NBA players. If we just assume 1 trillion humans, then it's 1 for every 1 million which is less rare than an NBA player. In either case the rarity of these scifi genetically enhanced super soldiers is still on par with the NBA with your 5000 people. So you're either just as bad as GW with this shit and don't realize it, or you really have no idea what the fuck you're talking about.
Will if youre sensitivity is just using that phrase without the context of anything else is enough for you to say bad writing, Id care to wager that you might be a little over sensitive, or perhaps over literal.
I never said it was the only example of bad writing, it's a simple and easily resolvable example of bad writing that the BL novels are known for. You're the one lying about shit, making numbers up, at least you finally quit double posting. But if you're going to say that anyone else is overly sensitive about a topic, look in the fucking mirror.

did, and then you decided they didn't count. So why would I continue providing more context?
Well half of the 2 examples you put forth were bad buddy!

Which is true, and it was enough that it stuck in my head for me to comment on it. I think it's shitty writing
So its shitty because they are not giving you the exact height?

But the description isn't wrong, you are just saying its bad writing because its not specific enough, and because they aren't being specific enough about their height, they arent describing something intimidating because that's the only thing that matter, apparently. Kinda silly tbh.

Now its my turn for search results results!

The NBA comprises roughly 500 players. There's only 30 teams with 15 players allowed on the roster plus a couple extra per team due to contracts. If you're going to count the number of people who have ever played in the NBA, then you may as well count the number of every human and space marine that's ever existed including all of the long dead ones. Holy shit, you didn't grasp from the conversation that it was about the NBA currently especially with regard to turning on a TV to watch sports? You really are fucking awful with reading and understanding numbers. Just like GW writers.

Which Black Library author are you?

Compromises 5000 EVER. I never said in at one time buddy.

Compromises 5000 EVER. I never said in at one time buddy.
No you didn't. It's right the fuck there.
Doesnt the nba only comprise of like 5000 people or something?
There is no "ever" or "all time" or "total people who have played in" or anything of the sort. if you meant "EVER" then maybe you should have typed that? You know, like how black library writing could be improved by better descriptions to explain what the author is talking about? Fuck, now you're lying about the content of your own posts.

No you didn't. It's right the fuck there.
Yes I did!

You just assumed because you wanted to believe something, which is funny.

Yeah, ok. You can't fucking read. Lie about your own posts. Suck with numbers. Apparently love just changing context randomly even though it was clear people were talking about current day and not "all time" or anything of the sort. Now now you're going to claim you did say something that you previously did not, including having "EVER" involved(which you felt the need to include in all caps later), which it wasn't.

Which is still ironic considering the commentary I made was about using appropriate words to describe something or explain your meaning. Something you're fucking awful at doing, repeatedly in this thread.

Oh no what happened in 40K that caused the thread to explode did they finally do female space marines?

Oh… oh right. Forgot how lore discussion can be.
