I own 0 of the warhammer total wars. If i were to buy one, I assume its 3?

I figured I might give it a go even though its fantasy.
Depends on who you like. With how it works now, if you own either(I believe) TWWH1 or 2, then you can play the factions you own in the WH3 immortal empires campaign. So you have the larger map size and additional factions. It's nice, but if you wanna play any of the factions that came from WH3, then you gotta cough up full asking price for wh3. WH1 and its dlcs include the Empire, dwarfs, orks, vampires, beastmen, norsca and some Chaos warriors. WH2 has skaven, dark/high elves, Vampire Coast, Lizardmen, and tomb kings.

Supposedly if you own 1, but want a DLC faction from 3, you're supposed to be able to just buy the faction from 3 and still play it in immortal empires without having to buy 3(unless you want a faction from the base game of 3 at which point just buy that or the upgrade for it).

The good news is that they're finally heavily discounting 3 as well, so it's only like $15 right now, while most of the various DLCs for factions and heroes are 50% off.

I'd like to add that there's this thing called creamapi that unlocks all DLC. I only wish I'd gotten in on it sooner because boy have CA taken my wallet for a ride.
Obviously use at your own risk but as far as I know no one's ever gotten banned for it.

idk if it's updated for wh3's current patch and they've removed the ability to roll your game version back. Was looking into it, I think smokeapi gets more updates not sure. I also own all the dlc. Guess I'm just a stupid goy.

I have just a passing knowledge of fantasy so I'd only really be interested in Dark Elves, Slaanesh demons (I know what kind of man I am) and maybe Bretonnia or Empire because more historical. Maybe I'll get WH3 and go from there. I still have a lot to go with Rogue Trader (and my god is that a fantastic use of the IP).

I'm surprised GW didnt try for an AoS version as it would mostly be a reskin of the fantasy game whereas 40k needs a whole lot more. Would proba help people get into it too.

Mildly offtopic rant inc

Im looking forward to the 40k TW but I have my doubts. I played a lot of the historicals and it feels like a game mode thats built for 1 world/planet for the map and mostly melee armies. Empire worked (gunpowder) but if they ever tried a more modern TW (Franco-Prussian war or later) the game would fall apart imo. Its really designed around melee and charging being strong whilst missle troops sit back and tickle each other.

Stellaris with an interactive ground combat is a much better candidate for 40k imo. I love Stellaris and it consistently grows on me because its so open ended and creative and has so so SO many 40k references and builds. It just needs something for ground conbat so its not just bombardment+number invading. This from a guy with like 30k+ hours across EU4, Vic3, HoI4, CK2 and CK3 where historical railroading is a thing.

GW doesn't make or propose games. Their licensing department is pure profit(it has something like a 95% margin) because all they do is greenlight game ideas from other studios, make demands about what content is included and what the art looks like, and then setup a revenue sharing agreement. There is an AoS RTS and it's... really fucking bad(and not due to being based on AoS either).

I've never played any Total War games. I saw the trailer for Total War 40K and thought "this looks sick." I saw the trailer of Dawn of War IV and thought "this looks sick." I started watching Total War Warhammer playthroughs and thought "this looks sick."

Can anybody tell me why people seem to be really mad and doomerish that these games are coming out? Every time I'm seeing posts about it comments are weirdly negative with low expectations. Does Total War actually suck and I'm just a fool?
There's a bunch of reasons. Some are related to the games themselves, some are related to gamers as a whole, and some are related to the autism of 40k fans specifically.

I loved Dawn of War, and DoW Dark Crusade. Soul Storm was a let down, and the rest have been a massive disappointment.
But even though DoW is universally praised now, I remember at the time people being salty for things like unit scales being off, or that their prefered faction needs a buff (because of course your favourite faction should curb stomp the rest).

That's the good ones. Fire Warrior was a mediocre at best, but the hate it got was rarely over the weapons having the accuracy of a horoscope or every enemy being a bullet sponge. No, it was "how can a fire warrior take on a space marine/greater and win?". The answer is because it's a FPS, but that's not allowed as an answer.

I don't follow Total War, but people have had issues with the series for years, and yet keep buying them. I don't get it.

but it's too much fun for me to decimate multiple units as someone like skarbrand before my own army even meets theirs.
Karl Franz on Deathclaw for me... Deathclaw's Bloodroar ability is one of the few that give demons and the undead a morale hit since its a direct penalty to leadership and most of those sorts of abilities work by bestowing Fear or Terror on a unit, and with Ghal Maraz he's a Grade A beatstick second only to dedicated guys like Skarbrand. But Franz's unique skill line supercharges Greatswords, (including the oh so magnificent Carroburgers), add in Gotrek and Felix for even more beatsticking...

edit: If these were actually major expansions, and priced appropriately it'd be fine. It takes time and resources to add more factions, units, and heroes. The problem is how piecemeal they do it in addition to the time it takes while being a mess.
Personally, I thought the Beast Man glitched where it was having a machine gun. Rock throwing towel was awesome.

Another offering to the thread.

Painted in 2 parts (wall and base were one half, he was the other) so his butt be looking fine and you can't even see it.

This made me have an epiphany- how is there no Officio Assassinorum killteam?
Made me wonder what team would make a good proxy. Clearly a five model squad, but none particularly fit. Best idea here is maybe raveners: it’s not perfect, but the tunnel could be reflavored as sort of duck and weaving out of/into combat?
Obviously main problem is canonical “power level”. Considering that killteam isn’t too well known for canon power level matches, I think that can be ignored :roll:

EDIT: forgot to mention, sick model

Not enough assassins to balance against the others but thats actually a great idea. Each one on the tabletop has different role/strengths, translates reasonably well enough for operatives. Maybe 5 generic assassins or assassins in training to pad out the numbers.

OA isn’t particularly my thing but I do think Void-Dancer troupe could work if you add in an aspirant-esque unit.
Death Jester -> Vindicare
Shadowseer -> Culexus
Leader -> Eversor…?
Then, the rest of the player models could be some sort of aspirant. (or use random models and call them five Callidus in disguise?!?)

I have £40 in vouchers lads I'm paralyzed by choice. There's so much I want but I've narrowed it down to another Arachnarok Spider, a couple old world characters or a tactical squad / devastator squad.
11th edition 40K is around the corner and I have a feeling the last two aren't going to be around for much longer.
