Yeah I saw the Trench Crusade video and wanted to come here to see if anyone could corroborate what was said about resin traps and delayed kickstarter claims made in that video. Like I mentioned above I have been out of wargaming for a bit and have been catching myself up. They apparently made plastics which seems like a good thing, no? I certainly didn't back because I think 3D prints aren't worth the pocket change they are printed from for a variety of reasons. I know Trench Crusade obviously had a lot of other "whoopsies" they did even back a year ago and was wondering if they ever improved the rules beyond "mordheim but boring"?
I backed the project before I was aware of any of the drama or stupidity surrounding it. Can confirm there's been a lot of fuckery. If you want a more detailed timeline of how shit went sideways, I've posted about it a lot in the Tabletop Community Watch thread, but the long and short of it is that TC have made bad choices at virtually every step of the process. They chose to go with Only-Games despite multiple people warning them about their uneven print quality and bipolar customer service, and Only-Games has repaid their trust by repeatedly fucking up their delivery timeline and screwing over a bunch of the whales who went all in and have received orders that were missing stuff or came with broken, badly printed, or incorrect miniatures. Same goes for the book; their printer screwed them, causing a delay in the books that now means North American backers will be waiting until at least February and probably longer for delivery to be completed. Couple all that with their Discord troubles and inability to actually operate like a business, and I don't see them lasting long even though they're now putting out plastics.

Speaking of, even that's pissed people off, because they confirmed that they'd be dropping STLs almost entirely with the move to plastic, so all the 3D-printing hobbyists who got into TC because of their STL-first approach are upset.

Friend, either you're closing your eyes
To a situation you do not wish to acknowledge
Or you are not aware of the caliber of disaster indicated
By the presence of a Warhammer World in your community
Well, ya got trouble, my friend, right here
I say, trouble right here in Washington DC
Why, sure, I'm a 40k player
Certainly mighty proud I say
I'm always mighty proud to say it
I consider that the hours I spend
With a brush in my hand are golden
Help you cultivate horse sense
And a cool hеad and a keen eye

Cyrus looks like he just realized his bolter has an ironsight that is blocking part of his top scope. Along with the second scope and a laser pointer. Also the replaced eye and his helmet that would be able to zoom in or adjust for him if he wore it.
He's gone past Mall Ninja and ascended into Mercatus Ninja.

The Army Painter's doing two more John Blanche paint sets:
Army Painter John Blanche set 3.webpArmy Painter John Blanche set 4.webp
Needs more red, orange, yellow and ochre yellow. Pink? Blues? Bright green? Seems like HERESY.

Yeah, I mean when would John Blanche have ever used anything other than the zorn palette. He'd never paint anything with blues, pinks, and bright greens.

Ok, maybe his art of the Khan is a fluke because it's a lot of reds and whites and not too much pink.

Well shit.

Was looking through an old HDD for something completely unrelated to 40k just now, found pictures of minis i painted that i never even knew i still had. These are from around the time when Dark Vengeance was released. Delighted to see these again. Excuse the shitty photography. These were originally posted on /tg/ in the WIP thread but i couldn't follow the "Just pop 'em in the fridge and take a pic" advice because my fridge light was on the fritz back then, same as it is right now.

The fuck do you mean "wish it was just a dictatorship?" This guy sums this thread up:

Might be worth crossposting in the TDS thread.
The store itself should be within a reasonable driving distance if it's indeed near DC so I'll definitely check it out when I can.
I'm sure it would be different in Bible-Nigger hating-place like Texas.
>Don't talk about trannies fucking over anything related to nerd culture!
>By the way, let me tell you how I hate Texus because of muh atheism and how they hate my niggerinos (I think, you worded it weirdly)!

:story:
I dont really believe in gatekeeping so long as you're actually participating in the hobby.
If only everyone realized this at the very least, but too many people believe any gatekeeping is bad even after shit goes south.

I've always wanted to get into Warhammer 40k since I was a child, is there any Starter sets you guys would recommend for a total noob?
How hard do you want to go? Do you want to amass 2k points worth of an army for the wargame or would you rather dip your toe in with a skirmish game like Kill Team? Do you just want to collect cool looking dudes? Do you know if you actually like gluing and painting models?

Pick the army you think looks cool and buy a combat patrol. Preset army with a discount for buying in bulk. Most are pretty good and close to 500 points, the smallest point games.

If its a good value combat patrol, buy a second. Research or ask around.

Then buy whatever else you want.

This is a very important point. Buy one thing (Combat Patrol or Kill Team) and then try painting it. In case you discover that you actually hate painting and want to bail. Even so, the gray Combat Patrol or Kill Team will be sufficient to play their corresponding game with. You can simply refer to Wahapedia for rules and faction data without having to buy books or search for PDFs.

Whatever you do, keep in mind you don't have to buy first hand from Warhammer dot com or an official store. The second hand market is vast and much better. Still, it's not a bad idea to look on the official site just to see if any models look cool. If you're not experienced with miniature painting, the sets with a few paints, a couple of minis, and a brush are a good way to test how much you like it and wont' set you back a whole lot.

I'm a total beginner and just want something to paint models and try out gameplay.
I've been currently looking at the introductory set.

The current edition of the generic 40k wargame - in my opinion - doesn't become that satisfying to play until you reach a certain army size. You need lots of meat for the grinder to make choices feel like they matter. Unless you get chummy with a local community and they let you borrow some stuff to try things out, you wont get a proper taste for what the wargame is actually like even if you went in on something bigger like the "Ultimate edition Marines vs Nids" box. In any case find a cool community to play with or rope one of your friends into starting with you.

Kill Team is a spinoff ruleset that smells like the wargame but has it's own identity. Instead of army vs army it's squad vs squad. If you want to play something satisfying with a small amount of models it's 100% the way to go. Anything you pickup for it also has rules to be used in an army for the other game system so very little goes to waste (depending on what you pick).
My advice would be: Yes try picking up that Introductory paints + test models box. Buy a small pot of citadel Nuln Oil. Get some army painter or citadel spray paint primer. Get some cheap synthetic disposable brushes, A small exacto or hobby knife, and some plastic cement (Many use Tamiya, if you go with the GW brand have a lighter on hand and be prepared to clean the nozzle with it).

Clip the model bits off the sprues, clean the parts up with the knife, then assemble. The models in these starter kits are usually custom built so that you dont need to glue them together but do it anyway for practice. When gluing the rule of thumb is "Less is more", you are melting the plastic together so apply carefully.

Once they're built, make sure it's not too damp, dry, cold, or hot outside. If the weather is good take them out, spray them with the primer paint. After that drys you're ready to actually paint. There's plenty of paint guides out there, skill matters but technique is more important. Even someone with no artistic talent can make good looking models.

You will almost assuredly ruin your first models, dont panic, this is normal. This is why you bought a box with random things in it. Decide if you found this even a little bit fun or not. Now go look at all the Kill Teams on the internet, find one that looks cool and buy it. Pick up whatever new paint colors you think you need for the scheme you want and just have fun with it. If you end up wanting to play it more seriously do some research on if the guys you picked are balanced around 1 box of weapon build options or 2

Kill Team does require model terrain but if you find a cool game store they will typically provide this for you in the play space. Some of the big kill team DUDES VS GUYS releases come packed with the terrain already.
If you eventually decide that you want to play the Wargame you need to set your expectations, are you going to just run what you like, run something that "works" or run something competitive. Don't just buy a bunch of shit all at once unless you're absolutely sure that's what you want to do. This can very easily end up like your steam library backlog. Chances are your first draft army list has major flaws, this isn't an issue if you're just fucking around and being jolly. It is an issue if you want the game to not be a wet fart of an experience for both players. This is different than being a hyper competitive try-hard. It's nuanced.
