So. Last Saturday's Game of
Only War managed to make it to 1d4chan levels of insanity much to my joy. How so some of you may ask? Well one of my players just managed to pul a
Grendel.
Here is the background. The 13th Tallarn (most of my players) have been called down to the Knight World of New Siddartha. The original natives of the world, technophobic copper age savages, managed to incite a powerful and deadly revolt with a lot of help from traitor governors and hidden unbound Psykers. They lost heavy casualties in the Northern Front due to the presence of "Wickermen", Knight sized constructs powered by burning warp energy. The natives were also heavily armed with mono weaponry and flak material due to the traitors. The crumbling situation required extra support in the form of Zeonia's Last, a Ratling regiment one of my newer players is a part of.
My players are a part of a Southern expedition sent to pacify one of the largest cities on the planet. To further aid them, the spare of House Mastela and elements of Zeonia's Last were sent out but were ambushed by raiding forces. Their original plan was to bust one of the tribe's big slaver camps, but when they got detailed plans of a surprise assault on the capital and seat of House Mastela. With the capital under threat, they went north. The situation was not on their side; the traitors may not have wickerman support, but they did manage to capture and direct great Land Worms that were armored in metals salvaged from sentinels and chimeras that dwell in the Savannahs of the world as Siege engines.
By the time they made it to Lucknow, the army was in the city and slaughtering remnants of their Regiment and the stretched PDF troopers sent to keep order. A quick firefight allowed the unit to save some citizens from a slaver's line, but the action drew one of the Worms. Sustained and brutal fire from the Sentinel units and a powerful shocklance strike from the Knight put it down, but they had to rush on. The foot troopers, comprised of Cpl. Shives and Pvt. Ismail were kept on guard watch for the civvies and traitors who surrendered. Pvt. Sahrp and Sgt. Baba continued on.
They in their sentinels dealt with rear elements of the Army and eventually came on the last stand of a unit of PDF lead by one of Tallarn's sons. They were getting slaughtered by the Worm and the infantry supporting it and were cut off. Under those circumstances, the unit stepped in to help.
A brief fight between the two forces ensued. Rook was providing covering fire on the tribals taking refuge in the ferrocrete buildings, which took some pressure off of the unit. But it was the section leader of the unit, Sgt. Baba, that had his finest hour. He with utter contempt sprayed a full auto burst of autocannon fire at the worm, and proceeded to roll 10, 10, 4. He entered righteous fury, and rolled again, 10, 6. The worm was shredded and screaming in pure agony, and Baba continued pouring it on with his second full burst. He slammed it again with 10, 4, 10. And then another ten and one more after it. With a final roll of 3, he did over 103 damage to this massive creature. All said and done, he got over seven tens by the end of it.
The worm blew apart into glowing light, as a phantasmal image of a great flaming sword erased it utterly to the eyes of onlookers. The chanting of a choir rocked the city, and made the army quail in fear. It was now that most of the tribals realized that the Emperor was not on their side. They immediately surrendered, with the orchestrators fleeing in fear and pain, too damned to repent.
Sgt. Baba and company managed to singlehandedly change the tide of a battle, maybe even the war, but now have drawn the eye of the Inquisition...
