Dan Abnett is a better Sci Fi writer than pretty much anyone currently directly employed by the company, so you can't really go wrong with his stuff.

aye, McNeil is a good second.Dan Abnett is a better Sci Fi writer than pretty much anyone currently directly employed by the company, so you can't really go wrong with his stuff.
Yeah he told me that I'd like Horus Heresy too so that's probably a good bet. Appreciate the recommendation manGaunts Ghosts, space marines omnibus, Horus heresy, Baneblade, Dead men walking off the top of my head.
I'd recommend just starting with anything related to your preferred faction and branching off from there to other subjects of interest. So I'm very much new to the franchise other than the video games. A friend recommended to me the Forges of Mars Trilogy as a good starting point for getting more into the lore of 40K. Would you guys agree with that assessment or is there a better book/series to start with?
Does anyone read Warhammer 40k books? I'm not a fan of the games but the lore is awesome. I'm reading "Dead Sky Black Sun" right now and it's so good. I like it so much that I'm going to analyse it later to get better at writing.
I love the descriptions of all things chaos. It's so creepy & weird.
Can someone recommend other books?
Mat Ward was a truly exceptional lolcow and there's the additional benefit of him being in a position of power (overwrote 40k lore solely to make the Ultramarines look cooler, wrote hilariously OP army books, threw a bitchfit when nobody bought his Lord of the Rings game).who are some of the biggest exceptional individuals in the 40k community? considering how popular it is getting these days it seems to me that its only a matter of time until the fandom gets involved in some drama or spawns a cow
I just started a Blood Angel army last month. I only have 4 and a half marines painted so far.Monthly reminder that the blood angels and salamanders are the best space marines.

This is my first WH40K army, after reading their codex and lore I went with the 9th. I keep waffling between a pure Blood Angel army or a successor chapter like Flesh Tearers or Angels Encarmine (White Sanguinary guard yis). For now I'm just gonna paint up a tac squad as Blood Angels though as I get the hang of it.
I just picked my first army too. It was between the angels and custodes, though the custodes won out for me.I just started a Blood Angel army last month. I only have 4 and a half marines painted so far.

Never heard of them, must be a bunch of losers and nerds.Wrong.
Chaos (Space Marines) is the only true answer.

Again I only just now started getting into the tabletop, but from vidya the blood angels were by far the most popular when DoW2 dropped, imperial fists I honestly dont remember being all that popular, ill just take your word for it. I always remember ultramarines also being somewhat popular, Matt 100 percent skyrocketed their popularity by force tho. When I ask my normie friends today its always Ultramarines or Blood angels when they think of a 40k space marine. The ones picking blood angels tending to be older.Hey man, no need to project...
On a more serious note, were the Ultramarines always the poster-children of SM? My vague recollections of joining onto Warhammer told me that Blood Angels and Imperial Fists were all centre-stage some 20 odd years ago, and Ultramarines were just those guys who fought the Tyranids. At what point did that change? Surely not only when Matt Ward arrived.
Emperor TTS is legit one of the best game related parody shows. No question.Blood Angels were GW's go-to before Ward took over, being the original stars of the Space Hulk boardgame and I believe a few others things that were before my time. Imperial Fists and successors had awesome shit for them like Armageddon and the Siege of the Imperial Palace. Also, I can recommend "If the Emperor Had a Text-to-Speech Device" if you want what is essentially the "A Kiwifarmer explains shit to kids these days" take on Warhammer 40k lore and events. Spoiler: the Space Wolves are highly unimaginative and the Iron Warriors are a bunch of angry, bitter lolcows. If you want some actual quality UM stuff, the Ultramarine novel series has got you. Between Ventris and Titus the 4th Company really seems to pick itself the best captains.

The real answer is that these 3 legions are the primary colors, and are thus the most popular due to that.
