The characters being introduced excite my dad, who has no idea the game exists. I think this is the bigger issue, the people they are trying to court are completely unaware of the existence of Multiversus given the limited and online-only presence. Plus I don't believe you could sell them on this type of game in the first place. My dad only plays Rocket League at this point, if not seventh gen or older games, Smash is not the type of game that appeals to the audience they are after. They should have focused on Millennials and Zoomers. You bring up an interesting point with this, and I'll admit the only person I know of who was hyped for these characters, was DarkSydePhil; because he is an internet boomer who talks a lot about 80's/90's shit that his younger viewerbase probably has no idea about. But you're right, outside of DC Comics, Hannah Barbara, or Looney Toon characters; anything older than 20 years old isn't gonna be relevant. And the generation that would know who Gizmo, Spike, and whatever else is; we're at the age where we wait and see, instead of OMG DAY 1 BUY!!!
Watching content on Multiversus, it is always some young person shouting for more CN or DC characters, maybe Walter White. It feels like LEGO Dimensions all over again, where they hit jackpot at the start, but then it slowly teeters off into the big new franchises being Knight Rider, The A Team, Goonies, Gremlins, just this pot of 80s IP that hold no value to the playerbase with promises of better content in the future. It can't sustain like this and they really needed to better connect with the audience.
This is pretty much why it is popular to begin with. The hype came from CN fans more than anything, yet AT and Steven are really the only CN IP in game. It is funny to see the hype only really go up when the possibility of the new character being Samurai Jack is rumored. They either should have just done CN Punch Time 2, or really expanded the CN IP early as Ben 10 and PPG are glaring omissions, not to mention the Teen Titans. This game should've just been a Punch Time XL sequel in the first place. They already had a pretty decent roster of characters, and it would've made way more sense to pair the Nickelodeon smash clone with a Cartoon Network smash clone.
