If he'd done that, Chris would probably be homeless now and just as unable to hold a job.
So... Bob's greatest achievement is preventing Chris from turning into Phil?

Bob's was unarguably better than Barb, at least he tried, he was too old to deal with an autistic boy, etc.

There's three things I'd like to add though:

1) had Chris been a neurotypical boy I'm pretty sure Bob could've groomed him into a semi-decent man (although still a redneck) despite Barb's nefarious influence.

2) Bob's children probably turned away from him because of Barb. Why the fuck would want to take your family to meet your father, who might or might not have divorced your beloved mother in terrible terms, if it means you have to put up with your borderline psychotic step mother and borderline retarded half brother?

3) Bob should win the father of the year award posthumously for keeping his child from going bankrupt long after his death :c

Bob is a total shit parent here is one example of many. He allowed his dumb ass retarded son to go on a date with a girl he met on the internet who was attractive and intelligent while he accompanied them. This right off the bat should of been a major red flag for any adult regardless of what age you are. But Bob didnt seem to be bothered by this. Why would this girl be interested in my autistic son? This questtion didnt cross his mind. Then the pickleman shows up. Wheres bob? Sitting on his ass in the food court. If my retarded son was trolled irl by a man in a pickle suit that man would be picking his teeth up off the ground. Not bob ...aint got time for that.

iirc, all the kids who aren't cwc disowned him.
Chris claimed not to love him. Although I don't know whether that was because he was an unbearable person to be around in general or if it was more like how a 6-year-old screams "I hate you!" when their parents punish them.

I wonder sometimes if maybe there was an emotionally abusive side to Bob. People have said that he was fairly charming IRL, but that may not have been the case with others. The thing is that the two people who have given us the most information about Bob are Cole and Chris, neither of whom are exactly reliable sources. But while Chris' claim that Bob "starts more arguments than there are flies on a garbage dump" and Cole's claims that Bob had a "bitter influence" on Barb may just be histrionic exaggeration, it could also be a sign that he was genuinely a difficult person to get on with. And while we tend to interpret Bob's inaction in later life as tiredness at the crazy antics of his retarded son, it could also be interpreted as belittling Chris. Then we have the facts that his first marriage broke down, his kids hated him and even the marriage to Barb seemed to be more out of a fear of being left alone than anything else. Maybe the simple truth is that whatever he tried to do, he was just kind of a cock.

I get the impression he may have been an abusive drunk in earlier life, but had mellowed somewhat by old age. Also that flies on a garbage dump sure sounds like a Barb-ism to me, with Chris likely just echoing it.

If it was just Cole, I could write it off as Cole being a douchebag and a shitty person and probably just a bitter stepchild, but neither of his own two children wanted anything to do with him either.

I think he did want to do well by Chris, though, and was better than Barb. The only times we saw him in a real rage, he had pretty good cause to be in one. He probably overestimated the chances of actually having the house condemned because of Barbage, but usually a family hoarder is a private embarrassment, and here, his tarded son broadcast it to the entire world.

No, he was not. At all.
A good parent is someone who puts their child's needs ahead of their own, and Bob never did that. He did not take even the most basic of steps that could have helped Chris. He refused to let Chris get the special education he needed, he made no real effort to curb Chris's spending or weird obsessions. Never took care of his diet, hell, didn't even keep the house in a livable state. He left Chris to raise himself on video games and barely-understood pop culture, something that would be unforgivable towards a normal child, let alone one in need of special care.
You can argue that he was too old to be raising Chris and that might be true, but it's not an excuse. Grandparents all over the world step up and care for their grandchildren after terrible circumstances and most of them do a better job than Bob.
It's a what-if scenario, but if Chris was raised solely by Bob I truly don't think he would be much different than from what he is now, except that he might not be so emotionally unstable and wouldn't have become a tranny.

Maybe she was just being nice and having lunch with the retarded kid? He already had specifically hired girls to do that for Chris in high school.

What is the worst that could possibly happen, especially if Bob was there with Chris at the date? Is it reasonable for Bob to suspect there was a conspiracy of people on the internet to torment Chris with fake girlfriends, just to have them snatched away by men wearing foam pickle suits or by guidos with orange faces? Bob was a "total shit parent" for not foreseeing that happening?

People have a bizarre case of 20/20 hindsight when talking about Chris' life and the fuckups therein.

Bob wasn't around for the pickleman.

Let's flip the script and consider what the fuck Bob was thinking when he decided, "Christian's going on a date with a girl... I better come along then!" He had to know that this would make Chris look like a total tard, and would guarantee that had this girl been genuinely interested in his son, date #2 was never going to happen.

Now, one could argue that Bob tagging along was Barb's idea (which it almost certainly was), or that Bob knew that there was no way that a girl would be interested in a fat autistic wearing a clown shirt and that stupid medallion, but still, had that been a real date, Bob would have totally sabotaged it from the very first moment. So he basically cock-blocked his own son.

He didn't need to believe it was a romantic date. Maybe just a lunch date with a friend.

Still, unless Bob believed that Chris was a complete tard who needed babysitting, why not let him go off and meet her on his own, regardless of whether it was intended to be romantic or platonic?

He bought Chris friends in high school. He did believe Chris was a complete tard who needed babysitting.

But he did believe he was a complete tard who needed babysitting. Because Chris is a complete tard who needs babysitting. For all Bob knew, the troll had an even more malign motive than just pranking Chris.

He bought Chris friends in high school.
Did he really do that? I've always thought the whole "I remember my Father giving me money and asking me to give it to Natasha as payment for her Friendship and Attention" was some sort of autistic hyperbole created by Chris' mind.

Nope Bob aranged for the High School Galpals, I don't think cash was involved but he had a word with the head teacher to get some inoffensive girls to babysit Chris at lunch and break.

I think the fact that Chris exists and is the way he is now is fairly strong evidence against the claim that Bob was a good parent.

Did he really? Well this puts things in a different perspective for me. If he didn't care about his son, at the very least he didn't want him bringing further shame down on his family name (although I'm sure Chris has still ruined "Chandler" for pretty much everybody regardless). .

The main way he was literally not a "good" parent was just having a child at the age he did.

The chance of having an autistic, retarded child was vastly higher for someone his age. He gambled, he lost.

Compared to Barb, he was definitely the better parent but does that make him a good parent? Not really, in my eyes. He still coddled Chris, but unlike Barb, he did attempt to put his foot down to some of Chris's shenanigans. I do think he had good intentions, but it was all undone by his age. The man was too old to be having more children, he can't keep up with them at his age.
Let's not forget to mention that he still very much had a backwards way of thinking which prevented Chris from getting the help he needed at a crucial age.
