Wasteland - The Predecessor and Successor to Fallout

How cute.
You guys forget that in the 90s, RPGs were easily 80 hours. What's wrong with having a lot of gameplay?

I remember how we used to sperg about FF7 being on three discs and that was like a 90 - 100 hour game if you want to do EVERYTHING in it.
That was if you wanted to do everything. Not everyone has it in us to do all that Chocobo bullshit. I'm more of a main game and side quests guy myself.

That Prepper skill is fucking stupid.

And yeah that's fine just wanting to do the main game, but I don't see why people would be upset with getting a lot of game. I work full time and I work nights, doesn't leave me a lot of time to game as it is but I'm excited for something that will offer me that much entertainment in a genre and setting that I enjoy.

So apparently once you click on a quirk you can't go back to not having one. I haven't even left character creation and the fucking thing broke.

In this modern digital age though when everyone has a backlog a mile long extreme length ain't as appealing, 50 hours is a good sizable length, 100 hours is maybe excessive.

Haven't had that problem. Going through it Co-Op. I have to say, I am impressed over the changes to 2. Lots of skills can be used in convos. Co-Op is fun and what X-Com should have had. I'm only like 4 hours in and it has remedied some of the problems of 2 (Like making an NPC with Toaster repair).

Though my partner has already hilariously broken the game. He basically put all of his skills/points/quirks into a min-maxed Sniper build, has 11 pen right off the bat and a 20% crit chance at the start. He basically one-shots most enemies. Its kind of funny.

If the gameplay is boring then it's not good to have a lot of it.
Wasteland 2 was pretty terrible in that regard (and in most regards, really) since it had a ton of combat and yet the combat was extremely shallow and on top of that a large portion of the fights were against trash mobs.
Given this one is long as fuck too I think I won't even bother touching it given inexile's awful track record.

Wasteland 3's combat plays like the Firaxis XCOM games, so the gameplay isn't boring IMO.

Every other turn based and squad based game made in the last decade plays like Nu-Com, most are in fact, very boring.

Perhaps for you, I enjoy it. As an adult, I don't have the time I once did to dig into fully autistic systems micromanagement like classic X-Com and older 4X games. I enjoy just being able to jump in and have turn based tactical combat.

As an adult I played a lot of TBTs and developed standards. Thus if something is just a shallow nucom clone that doesn't even try to learn from the few things nucom got right, I won't bother playing it and will instead do something else.

I don't think the game is shallow but I will say it's not as in depth systems wise as Wasteland 2 although I think that was the point for them. My expectations for modern games usually hover around zero nowadays though so it's hard to be disappointed if you weren't expecting much anyway. That doesn't excuse bad games or bad design, and there's a ton of companies I will never, ever give my money to now, but a game doesn't have to be perfect to please me these days.

Example : I've been playing Dead Frontier 2 with friends lately and that game has a ton of shit wrong with it, it's extremely obviously low budget as fuck, but it's still fun to romp around in.

But Wasteland 2 didn't have jack shit in the way of systems, how can you be even shallower than that?

Wasteland 2 had a lot of stupid shit skills wise and 3 seems to have made it a little simpler so that you don't need 4 different skills to do one thing. I only have a couple of hours in the game so far though, so I don't have a complete opinion on everything yet.

I've been dipping my toes into Wasteland 1 by way of my purchase of Wasteland 2. Firstly, I really like what they did with the re-release where they put the paragraphs in the game itself via narration. I was worried about needing to alt-tab back and forth between them. Beyond that, I'm adjusting to the way the game works. I think I built my characters wrong somewhat, but from what I've played I can see the seeds for what would become Fallout, primarily in the way combat works. Positioning is everything in the game and you need to make sure you're actually moved in so your attacks can land. It's not ideal though since it's not always clear what position the enemy is in (I spent way too long fighting Bobby and hitting nothing before I realized I had to move in to land any hits). I don't think I understand the game, but I kinda like the process of learning the mechanics. It's been a while since I actively had to learn how a game works, and while I wouldn't say Wasteland 1 has aged gracefully, it's still engaging trying to figure out what makes it tick.

Speaking of Bobby, that whole situation in Highpool is surprisingly fucked up. A lot of those early RPGs force you to do evil shit, like killing children in Ultima, but I didn't expect basically destroying the very first town you come across. And it's especially interesting because the backstory builds the Desert Rangers up as protectors of the people but you completely fuck up this town and you can't really do anything different.

Wasteland 2 was pretty good and only started to drag once you reached LA and even LA had its moments.
