Wawa - And other Gas Station food i guess

Was working late tonight and the last thing I wanted to do was a drive threw burger. On a whim I dropped into a wawa instead, figuring I would get a sandwich or something. My past experiences with Wawa have been lacklustre. Their breakfast sandwiches are pale imitations of McDonalds, their regular sandwiches are pale imitations of Subway. Only thing I really liked them for in the past are their fruit cups, coffee and the 99 cent 32 oz unsweet teas.

Yet tonight, I noticed something, probably a product of me being there at night perhaps? Main course dinner meals similar to what you might find at a Kroger or Publix. Grabbed the grilled chicken breast. It was...surprisingly good. Admittedly good is relative here. It was two cold chicken breasts for 7 bucks. But it came with two lemon wedges and a bed of spinach greens that...were also good. Two packets of hot sauce made the chicken pretty good too for the price and what it was.

It seems to be part of a growing trend among American convenience stores to not suck so much.
 
Your Wawa sounds much less like the gas station pit stop than where I grew up.

Slight powerlevel but I've naturally supported QuikChek over Wawa based out of geographic pride, even though they're about the same quality-wise.
 
Since we are on the subject, has anyone ever tried the cheeseburger "hotdogs" I see at 7-11? They are always there, brown and turning next to the regular hot dogs, so someone has to eat them. I've always been curious, but not THAT curious.
 
I actually like WaWa.

I like their breakfast shit, particularly their french toast.
Their subs are better than main brand shit like Subway.
AND FREE COFFEE!

I like them.
I used to get them a lot on the way to work a few jobs ago.
Obviously they're not a cheeseburger by any normal metric, but like the pizza (if you get one made fresh) they go well with a bunch of shit from the toppings bar. I usually got onion, salsa, a bit of chili, and maybe some jalapeno or mustard.

but yeah Wawa's cool
I've usually gotten good sandwiches there. Not as great as this one rando gas station I worked near that did similar on-the-spot sammich but they used Boar's Head, but good stuff.
 
Wawa is made from the same shit as Taco Bell and Pizza Hut.
Gross.
 
I like Wawa, at least when it comes to certain things. Their sandwiches can be great (depending on how you choose to build them, of course), their soups are alright (particularly the French onion and chicken & dumpling, when available), and some of their smoothies/frozen drinks are delicious. I have a friend that waits all year for The Gobblers, if you're into that sort of thing, and Hoagiefest can't be beat for cheap sandwiches. Oh, and their pre-cut mango is wonderful.

I love QuickChek for two reasons, namely the large braided pretzels and what I'll call the Bibendum Special, my all-time favorite custom convenience store sandwich: breaded chicken, bacon, mozzarella, sweet fried onions, hot banana peppers, and ghost pepper sauce on a Portuguese roll. It's delightful and you should all try it.
 
There seem to be two types of gas stations now. There's the nicer, larger ones that are usually cleaner, better lit, and will have some ready-to-eat warmed food for sale; Wawa, QuikTrip, KwikTrip, Racetrac and others. Then there's the just a gas station ones, they tend to carry much less and can oftentimes be kind of scummy and stainy; Citgo, Amoco/BP, Shell, Mobil.

Wawa never seemed special to me. I've only been to a few and while they were nice, they were right in line with other stores of their class.
 
I'm pretty fond of pizza from a truck stop that operates close to my area but it's pretty expensive for what it is compared to just getting a shitty frozen pizza from your local store
 
Wawa has the best seasonal coffee.
 
I used to go to the wawa all the time when I worked late nights. I imagined back then that a sandwich from the wawa was a lot better for me than wings that had been sitting in the heater at 7/11 for way too long or some fried bullshit from sheetz.

I don't like cheese or egg but damn I can eat one of their sausage/egg/cheese sizzlis everyday. They must be putting crack in them.
 
I lived on Wawa dogs in college. Dog, soda, chips for $3.99, hot and ready any time day or night. Couldn't beat it.
 
Their smoothies are very good but they always hide the Icee machine away in a corner where nobody can really see it.

Both Wawa's and Circle K made brief appearances in New England, but I haven't seen either around here in years. Probably more like decades.

Everything around here is either generic attached to a gas station, Cumberland Farms or (rarely) 7-11. FWIW, your typical Cumberland Farms manages to be both gross and overpriced. The couple of WaWa's I've been in in Pennsylvania were all nicer than any of the Scumby's I've ever been in.

We do have a fuckton of Dunkin Donuts, though. Lived in a town of 10,000 that had three of those, with a fourth just outside in another town. Go figure.

Edit: There are in fact a bunch of Circle K's in Massachusetts. one in Connecticut and two in Rhode Island. Never seen them, and I used to do a LOT of driving for my job.

There were a few Cumberland Farms here in NJ but I don't see any anymore. Quickchek-based in NJ-just got sold to Murphy USA
There are still a couple old 7-11s around.
Wawa has been throwing stores up left and right in NJ
