Week of the TOR - No theme, besides we are all connecting through TOR for a week.

TOR might be slow, but at the very least it works. And while yes, it is a known FED honeypot, it does at the very least, work.

Though with the whole clearnet being a censorious fuck thanks to TPTB because of a centralized internet, it seems that internet balkanization is inevitable at this point. People crave for freedom even if they don't have the words for it.

Funny how the topic was brought up ages ago in the early days of the Killstream. With Ralph, Josh and Metokur discussing about the state of the internet and where its headed. We are already there.

i downloaded TOR browser and opened KF, i didnt know its this easy so im just making sure.
The older versions were a bit more of a pain, but they've really streamlined things.

I'm a complete boomer who downloaded Tor just for this site. Can someone explain in layman's terms why I can access this site through an Onion link but not any normal methods?

Every device connected to a network (the internet is just a network of networks) has an IP address. This can be difficult to remember so they created the DNS which basically keeps track of which website address maps to which IP address. So this is how the normal internet works, you type in www.google.com your browser asks the DNS for the IP associated with that address and then connects to that IP.

TOR doesn't have a DNS. The TOR network is made up of a series of volunteer systems that act as relays which communicate with each other. When you connect to the TOR network (of relays) your message is randomly forwarded through the network with each relay (except the first and last obviously) not know where the data is coming from or going. There's also a lot of encryption involved with each relay encrypting or decrypting the messages (basically adding layers or peeling layers i.e. why it's called onion).
Anyway the request propagates through the network until it reaches it's destination (in this case kiwifarms) which then responds and the message goes back the way it came (it follows the circuit back) to you.

TL;DR: TOR is a network "ontop" of the internet that communicates in it's own special way that is different from the regular internet so you can't use regular internet means to connect to it.

I'm pleasantly surprised as well.
Kudos to TOR or maybe is just the server load tanking.
Was pretty surprised myself as well. The first load in took awhile and I just let it sit, but once that finished, clicking through threads is overall pretty fast. For now. Unless all the assholes are just asleep and not putting pressure on the site at the moment.

You still have to route .onion through Tor's SOCKS proxy.
Which, while really super neat information, doesn't change the fact type address hit enter, same browser, same connection, changing nothing,="regular internet"

You're here, aren't you?

Well, Brave browser is the easiest, it's not that secure but if you're just browsing kf then it's probably enough unless this shitty forum gets declared a terrorist group and they start rounding everyone up then Brave's tor window might not be secure enough.

You can also download the tor browser from: https://www.torproject.org/
Any chance you know of a good phone compatible one for when I'm on the shitter? I can't seem to access tor with the Brave app like I can on my actual computer.

does it mean it's possible to connect to kf using IP address then (on regular browser)? instead of domain name
Theoretically yes, if the server was configured to allow it. But I suspect it probably isn't because that would (practically) send traffic directly to the server, the idea behind cloudflare was that it would be the public recepient of all requests, it would filter out bad requests and then (ideally) only send the good requests to the kiwifarms server (the DDoS protection). Presumably the server was configured to then only accept traffic from cloudflare.
I imagine if the server was left open it would almost immediately be taken out by DDoS attacks, which was pretty much the entire point of why they wanted cloudflare to drop kiwifarms after all.

I know people say it's dumb to miss this place n sheeit, but dammit this is really THE only place where I can speak my mind and not get lambasted (usually, lol and if I do I deserve it - that's key right there). I'd sorely miss this place and hope Josh gets some well-needed rest in between putting out fires both here and in his personal life. Yay Brave's easy TOR access!
