Weight loss support thread

Can I just say I personally hate nutritionists and feel they are the most worthless "medical" professionals I've ever had to deal with (and that's saying a lot with how many I've dealt with the past 5 years)

I've never met a nutritionist that could give me an actual eating plan that works to their own standards. For the most part they have always just given me some list of things I shouldn't eat. The few times I've had one who has given me an actual "balanced" diet plan, I always come up way under what they think my caloric needs should be in order to stay "healthy and balanced" (aka no cholestrol and fats)

Is there just something I'm not getting? It almost feels like they are intentionally screwing me over and I feel like I'm in that situation again where they're telling me now I'm not eating *enough*, but for me to hit the point where I am getting the proper caloric intake I have to eat things they don't want me to eat.

It's literally calories in:calories out

Your body does not defy the laws of thermodynamics, find your weight and average physical activity and check a TDEE calculator to see how many calories you should be eating to maintain that weight and then eat less than that.

And consider EVERYTHING YOU PUT INTO YOUR MOUTH. Don't go "ah this can of coke is only idek 150 calories so I don't need to track it" those little niggly 'snacks' add up and can tip you from losing weight to maintaining your weight to even GAINING WEIGHT.

It sounds like you are getting shitty ones. I would expect a nutritionist to put together full meal plans for the time frame that I want to lose weight. If I am paying money to get something better than what I could find online, I would expect something like that

If this is in response to me, I'm aware of that. My doctor recently told me I'm not losing weight because I'm both not eating enough and working out too much (lol wut?) which is why they sent me to another nutritionist (I already hated them through my time on dialysis) and once again it was just some overweight chick giving me a picture telling me not to eat junk food. She even supports the idea that I have body dysmorphia specifically because I keep such meticulous tracking of the foods I eat. (and yet, she can't be assed to even look at my food logs, other than to tell me I'm eating too many eggs and far too much meat)

There's a reason I don't have much faith in the medical system.

Literally drink more water.

Seriously. When I am plateauing with my weight loss (which happens more than I want), I lock my diet down again to about 1500-1600 calories/day, and only drink water after breakfast.

Hard minimum IMO, you need to be consuming at least a half gallon of water a day. This is non-negotiable. Preferably more like a gallon though. When you do this, your desire to drink your calories (BIG source of a lot of people's "accidental" calorie slippage IMO) goes away, and your stomach stays feeling fuller longer in my experience.

I've got about 15lbs to go before I hit my target weight for 10-12% bodyfat, and getting up to a gallon a day, every day is going to have to be a big part of that. Hopefully I can pull this off in the next 2-3 months.

It's always this and there are no exceptions. If you are fat you are eating too much.

Nutritionists are mostly scammers. No "dietary issues" are more important than not being overweight.

Maintain a calorie deficit to get to a reasonable weight then reassess. Most of your issues will already be gone and your life will be much better.

This goes for everyone.

did you tell her that you are an autist and just write down everything you do?

well getting the right amount of vitamins can help alot with feeling fitter and doing more workouts.

Maybe. but that's putting the cart before the horse. the only issue that really matters for anyone more than 20lbs overweight is to eat less and move more.

Nope. Nutritionist is not a registered or regulated profession. If they were worth shit they would train and qualify as a dietician which is regulated and supervised.

Completely forgot dietician is a thing. Gracias sir
No worries at all :) Best way to find a reputable dietician - or indeed, any HCP - is to first check State/Provincial regulatory bodies. But word of mouth is a solid bet too.

And with Dieticians, don't ask a fat person who has not lost weight for a recommendation. If their dietician was good then they would have got on top of their weight.

Just started trying to count calories, I noticed really quickly how much the sugar and cream I put in my coffee is going to make things difficult, so I 100% got to start cutting that down. I also have a tendency to go out around once a week and drink a bunch with friends, And those calories also add on a fuck ton.

I know I am going to fuck up a bit, but if I just do better than I do when I fuck up, I imagine it should all even out.

Gotta get on that black coffee grindset, son. Seriously, try a light roast, some at least semi-premium stuff. When the coffee doesn't taste like ashes to begin with, it goes down a lot easier without sweeteners and creamers. There's a coffee thread on the food board when you're ready to take the black(coffee)pill.

The discipline to keep my own calories down fails me sometimes (I had a milkshake today… a small one, but still, goddammit) so I'm happy that the weather is turning and I can now go for walks outside without risking frostbite. Can't wait for swimming season to come too. For some reason this winter has felt particularly long.

i’m lazy and don’t know how to cook but noticed recently it’s actually helpful... especially things that take longer to cook you’re delaying the time till you eat instead of sitting around inhaling premade shit. i find it helpful to put away leftovers/clean dishes/clean up cooking mess before eating to delay it even longer, also helps if you are lazy like me and slack off with dishes then just microwave whatever i made after.

in complete honestly i have a child’s palate but it’s a lot easier to work around it by fasting through the day and pushing eating as far back into the day as possible. cutting down portions is actually so easy too and helpful especially remembering the guilt from eating too much last time. drinking water and metamucil is so so helpful too.

also find an accountability buddy/group for weight loss it’s really good motivation when someone is also seeing the numbers on your scale. it’s actually more helpful than i imagined. what’s one of the most helpful things is looking at photos of my ideal weight and to remember that 5 or so minutes of satisfaction from food is not worth keeping the weight.

i haven’t read the whole thread if others have had similar tips but just sharing updates. would love to hear tips if anyone has any trying to reach my goal weight by summer

Status report: got a bad wind in the stomach feeling on day 3. my TDEE says my base expenditure is around 2500 a day, I wasnt gaining at a crazy rate by any means but dropping to under 1700 was a jump I couldn't do.

Im just going to try and clean up my diet in general. Weigh myself weekly, drink more water and while I will pay attention to the calories I take in, Im going to try and ease into it more.

My biggest takeaway (though I would wager someone else has said this), is to try to treat it as a marathon rather than a race.

Idk if this belongs in this thread or not but does anyone have any advice for losing legfat/toning legs?? I’ve lost 50+ lbs but the fat in my lower body just will not go away.

Nearly everyone with out of control weight will be astounded by the amount of calories they consume via drinks as soon as they start tracking.

That's why all the other shit is irrelevant until one gets a handle on what they're actually consuming.
