Weight loss support thread

I had stomach surgery back in may and I’ve lost about 50 pounds. I have hanging skin so it doesn’t feel like it though. I don’t miss food as much as I thought I would.

Looking at the deathfats section of the forums was such a wakeup call

Yes, Amber was kind of my wake up call that I had to get my eating disorder in check.

I gained a few pounds during my vacation the last couple of weeks, so it is back to my regular routine of no sodas, no alcohol and no fast food. I think I intend to show more restraint during my next vacation.

Anyone got any appetite reduction pills that they would recommend?
I keep a cheap green tea, caffeine, B vit supplement on hand at work. I take it as needed for fatigue but it absolutely reduces my appetite, too. But mostly I take it to have energy when I'm not eating. No hand shakes, nausea or headaches, it may not always kill extreme physical hunger but I can concentrate and exercise more when hungry with this stuff (And I drink obscene amounts of strong coffee and energy drinks every day as standard, yet this supplement seems to supress appetite even though caffeine alone doesnt do much for me). You might have to try different brands, there are so many similar products and they vary so much in price.

Paying attention to what I have been eating has been a revelation in and of itself. Especially figuring out "dense" foods that will sustain me for longer so I don't have a desire to binge eat. It seems silly, but I've discovered the grocery store makes a good alternative to fast food.

Today I spent 9 bucks at Aldi for dinner since I didn't want to cook. Had a log of goat cheese, 3oz of smoked salmon and some pita crackers. About 700 calories all together and really good. And about the same as what I would have spent going through a drive through. currently at 185. Down from 220 at the start of the year. Cutting out beer got the first 20 pounds, and the more recent 15 pounds has been removing heavy carbs like pasta and processed breads.

Cannot stress enough how useful the "myfitnesspal" app is. It's great at breaking down just what it is you are eating. It also allows you to plan out when too "cheat".

The Mrs. has made some significant progress over the last few months just doing Weight Watchers and calorie counting. I do the cooking so we typically have some variation of chicken breast and vegetables or salmon and vegetables for dinner. Occasionally I'll get tired of the usual and cook something more interesting but less appropriate for her diet.
Getting used to not using butter or buying things like whole milk was a real challenge tbh.

Somewhat related, boiled eggs are a great snack food for those who like them. The best part is is that they're compatible with the WW Blue Plan as a "0 point food" so my wife can have a reasonable amount and not feel famished throughout the day. Easy to make and cheap.

Water is fucking magic.
I went from barely drinking a small glass of stuff a day (carbonated water, diet soda, gatorade 0, etc) to my recommended 74 or so oz a day and started taking vitamins daily and it's made such a difference. Pair that with a daily walk, and getting my ass up every hour or so from my computer to stretch, do squats, etc and I've felt better than I have in maybe over a decade. Haven't gotten back into counting calories yet (fell off after a trip to see family. there's no saying no to your elderly family members about dessert, even if you've been to 5 other family dinners in the last week) but eating smaller portions and I'm already noticing a difference. I still have my low days, and while I've got my weed munchies mostly under control (protip: get some mints), I still have my low days.
Really want to start bulking up some muscle as well, but I'm admittedly a little overwhelmed with the amount of info on where I should start.
I'd like to lose 40lbs. 30 would be good enough, but I'd feel better about 40.

Seconding hard boiled eggs for a great snack. I can usually have one and some water and I'm good for lunch.

gunna be browsing this thread for other good tips.

I'm just glad I'm starting to feel human again.

Well lads, I smoked weed today but I stayed under my calorie goal! It seems like staying away from sugary processed snacks is a goal I can stick to while high. I snacked on berries and olives instead of cookies and chips and instead of getting couch-locked I went for a nature walk. I’m quite proud of the progress I’ve made in just 2 weeks! I’m already down an inch on my waist and I’m waking up feeling rested for the first time in my life.

To help some of you, I've found there is "fast food" out there that is good for weight loss without the suffering. Panda Express and Chic Fil A.

At panda, you can get the Plate with the Super Greens, Pepper Steak and Orange chicken. Final calorie count? Around 600. Or the Bowl with the Orange Chicken and White rice for about the same. Pro move? The Pepper Steak and super greens for a whopping 300 calories.

Chic fil A you can get the dozen grilled nuggets and a fruit salad. 400 calories. You can also "cheat" and just go for their regular nuggets and a fruit salad for about 700. Or their original sandwich (just dont eat the bun).

Even mcdonalds can be okay if you need that particular fix. Just order one McDouble with cheese and a diet coke or unsweetened tea. 500 calories.

I've lost a little over 40 pounds, and while it puts me in a healthy range and I feel great, I also feel like my face has gotten gaunt. I'm sure it doesn't help that I'm pretty pale. Any way to deal with this short of gaining weight back?

Got a photo of someone who looks like your face does now?

Walked 4 miles with my dogs today, though I separated the walks into morning and evening. I use a neat app to count my calories to remain in a deficit. Lost about 5 lbs in 5 weeks eating low calorie foods. By the time I'm done eating for the evening I already feel very full at around 1400 calories.

I've been asking this to a lot of my buddies who've lost a lot of weight and I've been getting no solid answers, so I figure I might as well ask you guys.

I'm a fat fuck (300 pounds, 6'1") but I've been dropping the pounds since quarantine started (30 pounds down since February!). However, I just learned about loose skin staying on the body after people lose a ton of weight very quickly. As I understand it, most of it comes down to genetics, but you can do a lot of things to mitigate it as much as possible (skin regimens to keep it healthy, eat foods that aid in collagen production, lose the weight slowly, get stronk).

Assuming all else fails and my genetics basically make me a walking bedsheet, what can I do when I get super lean to remove the skin that I have left? My goal weight is around 180, but I'm aiming for sub 15% body fat, 90% of my routine is weightlifting and other resistance training stuff. Not sure if that will lend any help to answers.

Woah, hold on there soldier. You can't lose weight and build muscle at the same time. I mean, you kind of can at first, if you've got a lot of fat and not much muscle. But the simple truth is:

-you need a calorie deficit to lose weight
-you need a calorie surplus to build muscle

And there's no way to make these two things true simultaneously.

As for skin, there's no way to lose it after it has grown or stretched out, save surgery. That's why deathfat tv programming shows the ultra obese losing weight, getting gastric bypass surgery, and then skin surgery. It's also why of women who have been pregnant, most of them will carry a small baby belly or extra skin roll for the rest of their lives.

So what it seems like you're proposing to do here- lose the weight through lifting - is ultimately not going to work the way you hope. You will end up either doing one or the other, depending on how many calories you're taking in. Too many and you'll gain muscle and gain weight at the same time. Too few and you'll lose weight but you'll make no strength gains. Most likely you will vacillate between the two and get frustrated that nothing is happening.

What you need to do is get on a cut-bulk cycle. Make your peace with the fact that when you're cutting, you're eating less calories than your body needs and you will, at best, be able to maintain muscle (but lose fat). And when you're bulking, you are eating more calories than your body needs and you will gain weight (but gain muscle too).

The advantage of these cycles is that you change the shape of your body gradually and you shouldn't develop the kind of loose skin that you're fearing. It's not dramatic -it will be at the end, but it lacks the 'ta-da!' factor of losing a lot of weight quickly. There are no short-cuts, tho. Don't starve yourself into a stick figure with sheets of skin and try to then blow it up again with muscle b/c you'll end up looking like a freak <shudder>.

Cut/bulk are the words you need to look up, and I suggest you take them to a gym/ powerlifting / weight loss forum to get guides on how long and hard to do the cycles, b/c I don't think the farms, fun as they are, are going to cover it for you.

I was waaay too hard on myself with too many drastic changes when I started this, and my headspace didn't allow me to stay consistent. It's been hard because my boyfriend usually has junk in the house and I'm an emotional eater. I've also been sick a lot. Things have been stressful lately but I'm trying not to eat my feelings. I've made improvements with diet by cooking yummy stuff to last me 2 days at a time, and it fills me up a lot more than my past favourites have, so less snacking. I definitely feel better after eating proper food with plenty of protein and vegetables.

Started a basic bitch Chloe Ting two week challenge and that's kicking my ass, but I already feel stronger after 3 days. I did up and down planks for 30 seconds without stopping this afternoon and I felt like a million dollars. I couldn't even do 3 in a row on day 1.

I'm definitely slimmer and down 2.5kg but hoping to see more changes as it gets into summer down here. I'm proud of myself for still getting back on the horse even though I keep throwing myself off when something stressful or upsetting occurs. Really proud of you all as well, it's pretty inspiring seeing other people making consistent choices to better themselves. You deserve health. Seriously.

Onnit has a really good bodyweight 6 week workout, if you wanna change things up atzany point. We did it at the beginning of lockdown, and my fit husband, fat me, and even 10 year old were able to do it. The bonus is there's 3 levels of challenge to it, so you don't have buy another one

Edited to add: I feel you on eating my feelings.

I've been eating like shit lately and every time I try to get off sugar, which is the biggest issue for me, and which is something i feel ls making my state of mind and state of health decline in the last month or so because I've REALLY been awful about it. I have an eating disorder and no money to consult a therapist.

Someone I know with a similar eating disorder says you have to get to the root of the problem. Honestly as cathartic as posting on this website has been for my own... personal reasons (having known a cow) I actually think it's just sort of made things worse. Or just the pattern of behavior started around the same time as those events.

I don't really have a plan to get off sugar. I know stopping drinking diet soda would be a good start since it has an insulin response. (I'm not diabetic but it runs in the family so I have to be careful.)
I feel like a fucking coke addict after a few days and relapse quickly. I've gained like 20 lbs. Help.

Do you do your own grocery shopping and do you meal plan/prep? For me, the best way to avoid eating food a I should not is to not have them on hand in the house because I'm not gonna spend 40 minutes driving just to get a candy bar.

As far as kicking sugar completely, how do you feel about fake sugars like sucralose?
