Wendigoon Thread

For anyone who doesn't know since there's been a few posts where people seem confused:

Main channel videos are researched and written by Mr. Goon himself, the older videos are also edited either by him or his wife though he has a handful of dedicated editors now. If he has outside input he usually immediately credits the help once he's done with that segment of the video, sort of the video equivalent of an in-line citation

Second channel videos are written by someone else, I'm not sure exactly where he found his roster of writers, if there's a rotating pool, one-off writers, etc, or if it's just his editors, but they're all very reddit-pilled. The second channel videos are there to soak up additional sponsor spots that he doesn't have the personal manpower to keep up with solely on main channel videos, and, if I had to guess, he probably wants the extra videos to help keep his editors busy and paid which, as a small business owner who sometimes doesn't have enough work to keep everyone working as many hours as they'd like, I find very respectable and relatable

The third channel is the new second channel where he streams and seems to be posting edited down streams for interesting things that come out of the streams. Who knows what this will ultimately become

The second channel is Wendi pulling a Simon Whistler, except it turns out it's harder to expand your brand when your brand is "sincere and heartfelt" instead of "British Ron Burgundy."

Does anyone have any recommendations of any channels like old Wendigoon? I discovered him with his Bible theory iceberg and the Conspiracy theory ones and those are still some of my favorites of his, and i wish i knew more channels that did something similar to that (not especially iceberg videos). I watched some of his bible podcast but it felt way too dry, and i still have to watch more of the Lore Lodge, but from the few i saw i enjoyed him too. It doesn't need to be a horror oriented channel. If there's something i learned with CreepCast is that i am not that big into horror.

"British Ron Burgundy."
>implying Whistler has an iota of the journalistic integrity that Ron Burgundy has in just his moustache

What part did you like about old wendigoon? I like Horses, he covers lots of topic, I dont especially like his philosophy videos, but others are pretty interesting.

I really liked videos like the NSFW raft, the Michael Rockefeller disapearance and Fordlandia ones, where it's more weird and interesting history then outright creepy or true crime stuff, kind of like the Atrocity Guide channel. And his Appalacchia lights video, as his US folklore showcase was an interesting insight, especially for someone who doesn't live in the US. And his Christian lore stuff, even the "fanfics" like Divine Comedy, Paradise Lost, and the Non-Canonical Bible books.

Dime Store Adventures does weird/unusual Americana, not horror. He talks more quickly than Classic Wendigoon, but he's a nerdy guy explaining something he thought was cool, and how he investigated it. Lots of videos where he's doing his host segment in a parka, sitting on a stone fence, to tell you about a roller skating marathon (unrelated).
Big primary source guy. Sometimes he gets distracted and shows every single time he can find an archive of a newspaper reporting on a tomato shaped like a duck.

If you liked his true crime or Missing 411 stuff Lore Lodge is a solid pick to stick with, if you want some specific episode recommendations I'm happy to send them your way. Their Missing 411 videos are especially entertaining, if they have a playlist for M411 I highly recommend watching them in order because the context of them completely changes by the end. They also have a podcast with Stakuyi/History of Everything that I really enjoy called History Unhinged. Basically a couple of historians and some random guy trying to bullshit their way through certain periods of history with no research. The first several episodes had audio issues so if they're too rough to listen to just skip to the point where Roman Helmet Guy is no longer on the panel. I really like the Tartaria trilogy. Starts on Lore Lodge, moves over to History Unhinged, then concludes on their Patreon (you'll have to find it on Kemono)

For more conspiracy oriented stuff, his content isn't really as long as Goon's for the most part (the low information density and length is something I appreciate about Goon's videos while I'm working) but Flesh Simulator has a lot of fun videos. Serial Killing for Fun and Profit is probably a good intro. He's the son of a glowie and his explanations don't always line up exactly with the official narratives so sometimes it feels like he's accidentally letting stuff slip that people have told him about what actually happened. This is also an interesting little series on the Vegas shooting available on Internet Archive. His drug videos are also fun, "6 most horrifying molecules" and "How I Quit Benzodiazepines"

There's a guy called Chayse who mostly covers trip reports but he recently had a couple of videos on Pizzagate that I thought were good. His video on urinal cakes is one that really stands out to me but his trip report videos generally aren't terribly Goon-like

Chilling Scares, despite the most generic, clickbait, lazy channel name I've ever seen, is one of the most cohesive channels I can think of. The channel itself almost feels like an album the way each video just leads into the next if you're watching it as a playlist. There's no intro, no outro, no sponsor spots, just an endless stream of content. As far as the content itself goes, it's just going over "Disturbing X" where X is reddit posts, 911 calls, memes, livestreams, live news, pretty much anything that could be both mildly spoopy and interesting.

Crowmudgeon is my favorite channel covering youtube horror series as of late

Heme Review/ChubbyEmu for breakdowns of weird medical anomalies like the japanese guy who got irradiated

I'll second Lore Lodge, they've improved since the original collabs with Wendigoon. The Missing Enigma is the best missing person channel imo, but his delivery is less like Wendi's lively story-telling and most of his recent videos are true-crime oriented. If you like humorous historical events/people, A Grain of Salt, shorter videos that don't try to make a serious point unlike a lot of Wendigang content.

Wendigang was the video game/stream channel up until a year ago, so I wonder how long it will take him to get bored of the new channel and change focus there too.

He put a help wanted ad out on youtube, twitter, and reddit and you had to fill out a survey (take a guess on where most of the applicants are from). I tried applying but I guess they didn't like my story about a gang war between Chinese miners during the California gold rush.

The guy who runs the 2nd channel does some writing but they seem to have a rotating pool.

He is such a lazy POS. Later in the video he debunks the entire first half of the video when he does an interview with the series creator.

In the Angel enigne video at 1:45:45:
He shows a screenshot from the creator:
Angelengine.PNG
and Wendigooner says this:
"Too clarify at the beginning of this video I said that a lot of the movments were uncanny due to the AI but here he is saying that he makes the movments out of the images that the AI gives him. So technically he is making the movments but their movments is still aproximate images. So my point still stands.
No it doesn't your entire point was that he took the first output and chucked it in the video. Which is why according to you it was difficult to tell what was going on using the visuals.
Which is such a retarded point half of the charm of an analouge horror is that it's a supernatrual obtuse mystery where one thing can have multiple explinations and clearly according to the creator
there was a lot more effort put in to the series then that. Which you would have known if you had ever used a generative AI as the first output is almost always shit.

He also showcases some of the messages he sent to the creator and he comes across as a twofaced bitch.

Once again the millionare not understanding that everbody can't afford to shell out thousands to artists. Now from what i remember from comisioning art for a video game. Is that ONE high quality conecpt render is around 110 bucks. Let's say for one video that he needs around 10 different stills no animation (which angel engine has a lot of). That is 1100 dollars for a single part and for the most part you can't even tell if they have used AI or not.
I wonder if wendigoon will make a video where he ponders why the homeless don't just buy homes and food if the are hungry and cold. After all they just need to launch a gofundme or launch some merch.

The way he focuses on time being the main problem and only indirectly adress cost makes me think he knows what he is doing but doesn't want to say it outloud in order to not seem like the bad guy.

To him, you can't use AI to help you punch above your weight class as a creator. You either need to make spooky faces using free stock photos and GIMP like every other solo horror project or shell out for a small studio and create a semi professional production at your own financial risk. Any workflows with AI is naughty and has no artistic merit so don't even try to get creative with it.

Also, Nostalgia Critic and RLM has taught me not to take critics advice as a creative too seriously, while they can have good points they have no practical experiance and when they do try to branch out into creating media they have spent years critiquing they usually suck at it. Wendi should make his own horror series and show everyone how it's done. No budget, no help from others, just himself and his skills.

I know I said a while back that I didn't want a conversation to fill the thread about Wendi but this is making some points that need to be addressed in a nuanced way(even if the post is extremely MATI).
It's clear that without Ai Angel Engine wouldn't have been made in the first place and that people do like the visuals and story. That's true, problems that I have with it is aside from the larger more important moments (the face of the watcher, the look of the caged angel, the look of the Angel soldiers) the visuals aren't living up to their potential and the drawn visuals are just better to me because of how much more controlled and purposeful they are. Regarding the question of a patreon yes, not everyone can get one and use it to fund a project, but a popular series(like Angel engines for example) could absolutely fund his work with a patreon.

I think I need to throw the Ai people a bone here and give an example of the Anti-Ai people behaving horribly.
I remember hearing about a kid out of art school that made a cgi animation where the Scooby-Doo gang gets chased by the fnaf animatronics(I think it was fnaf that part isn't important) because he was showing off his animation talent he didn't think of using real voice actors so instead he used Ai. Apparently the voice of Daphne from Scooby-Doo found the animation at THREATENED TO STOP THIS KID FROM ENTERING THE INDUSTRY because YoU sToLe My VoIcE, she RIGHTFULLY got a ton of shit for it and the kid later re-uploaded the video with real voice actors.

Regarding Wendi's video in particular, while a do agree with a lot of his points. I will say that some points are extremely petty and seething, he's clearly never heard a pro-AI argument and that hurts him.

On the audience side it just feels like pure novelty over Artisty and that's deeply Alienating to me. I don't hate people who use AI to make things, but I can't take this seriously because of how I've seen it used(shit posting mostly)

I may watch the source material for this out of spite just because anti-AI people have turned into such histrionic faggots that I find myself retroactively liking AI art all the more for it. Not a fan of what that says about me, but what can you do?

I agree. I am incapable of taking hand drawn art seriously for the same reason because I saw someone draw a dickbutt once.

Kindly share your story for the class.
Here is my write up about it from a while ago. It is a pretty funny shitshow that doesn't get a whole lot of recognition.
The Battle of Weaverville is a fun bit of autism.

During the California gold rush, two rival groups of Chinese miners had a beef over mining rights and old country shit and decided to settle it the honorable way. Both groups commissioned the town's blacksmiths to make them traditional Chinese weaponry. Once they got their weapons, they hired some white 'experts' to help train them. After a week of preparations they meet on a field outside the mining town, donned in traditional clothing and flying banners while the white townsfolk pulled up seats to watch and place bets on who is going to win (few whites even joined in as mercenaries donned in yellowface). The miners originally were getting cold feet about the battle, but were pushed into it by the white spectators. About 2,000 people were involved in this shitshow and after a short battle, 20 something miners died and one white spectator was shot and killed by another spectator for cheating by shooting into the group he bet against. Both mining groups claim victory, and fun was had that day by the white spectators.
Figured it would be a good fit for his channel.

Directed by Mel Brooks

ETA:
I can already see the movie poster, it's Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor in yellowface doing a faceoff with each other like you see in boxing title cards.
The title?
Chin to Chin
Little China in Big Trouble that might already be the name of a porno though

Lore Lodge is very hit or miss. He's sort of like MrBallen in that he adds way too much information to the subjects and bloats out the runtime, thus causing me to often times tune out of the video. I understand the need for building the backstory of a certain true crime topic, but I couldn't care less about the geography or history of the place where the incident happened. In Lore Lodge's earlier videos he would infamously spend about 1/3rd of the video discussing the early Native American history of the location where the incident took place. People in the comments would time stamp where the actual story begins, so you can skip it.
