Some of the DCAU movies get pretty graphic with the violence, rated-R stuff like seeing Starfire's ripped-in-half corpse with the guts hanging out, heroes and villains getting graphically killed with huge blood sprays and everything. Whether you consider any of those to be decent movies is another question ofc

Yeah, some of those old shorts were pretty good for what they were, but these are the newer ones that CN teased a few years ago but didn't end up releasing them... and judging by some of the leaked animatics to those new shorts...

It is kind of weird. There were Heavy Metal and Rock & Rule, both over 40 years old, and then almost nothing I can remember. The Japs by comparison have tons of that shit.

By comparison, their movie industry seems to suck ass. They seem to struggle doing movies with real actors and such, something the Gooks do more.

Yeah that's weird, too. I can think of shitloads of movies from South Korea that are absolute kino, but after Kurosawa, there's what? Tetsuo the Iron Man is the only relatively recent Japanese movie I've seen that I'd describe as awesome and that's over 35 years old.

I mean I'm sure there have been some good movies since then, but they haven't really jumped the border, unlike the Studio Ghibli movies. (I suppose there's Ran but I haven't seen that.)

Maybe but I'm not going to dis Fritz the Cat. It gave us this marvelous deconstruction of 2020s SJW-ism as it related to dumb white chicks, somehow, 50 or so years early.

Not to get too spergy, but He was able to do it because they’ve always been like that, it’s just in the last 10-15 years that they were both taken seriously, gained seats in places of power, and social media has taken the mask off on how insane/stupid they are. Literally nothing about their stupidity changed, it’s just that they have a bigger megaphone now and are taking things to their logical conclusion.

Old, but 1996's Shall We Dance? and 2002's Ping Pong are still good. Godzilla Minus One was surprisingly cinematic, although Shin Godzilla was, too, since Hideaki Anno loves his unconventional composition shots.

I think the Japanese film industry is still trying to get out of its funk. It was likely only held up by live-action manga anime adaptations and independent (guro?)horror.

Beat Takeshi made some good pictures in the 90s. Sonatine, Fireworks. I'm not a big one for most of Takashi Miike's movies, but 13 Assassins was a good meeting between his shock horror shit and a traditional samurai story. This century has def been pretty thin for live action film over there, though, the broader point I won't argue with at all.

It's interesting, if you look at a list of the all time top grossing Japanese films, the top 25 is Godzilla Minus One, two corny spinoffs from a TV police comedy, and 22 cartoons. 14 of the top 15 are animated.

Also, it was today that I learned The Adventures of Milo and Otis was made in Japan.
