I remember part of the old story advertised with Elio before the rewrites was that Earth was on trial for something. I heard that and immediately figured it would be preachy and unpleasant.

Knowing what we know now about the gay director and it being another self insert film, yeah, I can only imagine how obnoxious and preachy it was.
"Trans people are real women and you must let your gay friend suck your cock in any given time, or else you are a MONSTER, i mean, for realsiiiiies!" (Dylan Molvaney voice)

What a difference talent makes.

I hope someday we get a Sweatbox style "making of" doc about what Elio was originally meant to be.

Looking at the discourse of Elio has been interesting to me. Usually the guys I watch tend to reach the same general consensus about these kinds of movies, but reviews for this have been all over the place. I've seen everything from "it's pure garbage", "it's mid" to "this is fantastic". Still have no interest in seeing it myself, but I've been enjoying the wide range of criticism and praise this movie has been getting

The difference in character design talent is blinding, especially with the alien character. How does something have "unique" features, yet look so generic?

I've heard that it was a decent film from people that watch it, and I believe them. That being said, it just looks so boring and has no strong identity that it looks completely uninteresting to most people

Random thought but I'm keeping up with the art of recent animation grads, and they try to copy the artstyles of those working in the industry. It creates a kind of incest where it just eats itself over and over again, gradually becoming inferior,

It's like Turning Red or Soul - you might watch it on Disney Plus and it might surprise you.

I watched Elemental on a lark and was pleasantly surprised. It's just a romcom that's kind of a metaphor for the asian immigrant experience. It's super cute and the worldbuilding is fun.
Ironically enough, wasn't Wade supposed to be a White Guy and the Fire bitch an Asian girl? Its better than the usual Black Guy White Girl metaphors at least.

Along with new toys and a new comic, The Nacelle Company is developing a fresh series that will premiere in 2027. This upcoming series shares a connected universe and timeline with two other Nacelle animated reboots: “RoboForce,” executive produced by Brian Volk-Weiss, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Seven Bucks Productions; and “Biker Mice From Mars,” executive produced by Volk-Weiss, Ryan Reynolds, and Maximum Effort.

So is YouTube just where you have to go to find compelling cartoons these days? There's tons of pilots that just recently started coming out or have gotten a few episodes deep into their little seasons and it's actually been great to see animation that, while not perfect, has some kind of earnest spirit behind it.
You can watch anime, but a good portion of posters on this website are unfortunately quite autistic and one-minded in their hatred of it.
