Funny you mention that game. I was just listening to the soundtrack of the GBA version. (Done by Climax who had a history of good music on the GBA. Did a little research for this post to see who was responsible ...turns out that it's fucking 4mat!)
Man, I used to love that game! I only just discovered the other day that it was the same composer as SuperSponge on the PS1.

And then old memories and feelings of long gone by days echoes of a lifetime passed by came flooding back. Though really I think that's what us old dogs have been in this thread when not getting crotchety and bitter about the new stuff.

(i was tempted to use the rose from titanic saying its been 84 years pic but opted not too)

To get back on topic. I started rewatching pepper ann because why not and Checking the year it was released and accounting for development time even back then...why did Disney want to poach Doug from Nickelodeon at the same time? Pepper Ann feels like it was the same show just with a girl instead of a...oh that explains it.

Now you know what we 80's Nick fans feel like.

Even as someone who wasn't there, don't think I've never known what it feels like. Time is cruel to us equally. I guess it's just a bit of the old world blues kicking in, nothing wrong with that in and of itself. So long as it doesn't consume you and become your sole reason to live. Honestly at this point I'm grasping at straws to stay on topic and not turn this thread into an old dog's support group session....so here.

It sorta like what Robert Crumb had said about modern pop culture that he couldn't quite grasp.

Nick UK was vastly different to what I imagine you yanks had over there. We had puppet hosts in the early to mid 90's, for one thing.
Best we had over here was "Stick Stickly"...

All this remiscing is really making this old man cry. It's a little early this segment here remains the only surving footage of the 101 whizbang block. The block was more less Kablam after kablam. were rather than shorts created by animators in the hopes of becoming pilots nick would have Henry and Jun host blocks of their shows.
I also found a complication of their non kablam related appearances.

I miss them so much. If this recent neo splat logo and remake of the classic do wop bumper really is a blast to the past. (though really its a decade too late at this point he splat was done way better that long ago maybe more) Then maybe we'll see them again soon. hopefully none the worse for wear, and maybe not.

Edit: hope those kids who made those drawings at the beginning of the second segment are doing well wherever they are now...after all you wanna see the results of raising kids in the 90's...look outside the window. It's not a pretty sight.

Fun fact: Supersponge was a project hated by its dev team so much that they placed these images in its data files.

Sorry, felt it was funny to share, and what better an opportunity. SpongeBob game development is wild, and should be talked about more often.

I gave up on them when ghostbusters 2016 wasn't nominated at all. Not even for worst remake, prequel, or sequel. anyways to stay on topic there's surprisingly a few upload of Fairly Oddparents up on youtube.
Speaking of The Fairly Oddparents...

The Fairly Oddparents Shorts (1998-2002)

Part of the Oh Yeah Cartoons! showcase. Watching the shorts is such a trip, and to be honest, I find it more enjoyable to watch than the main series.

Cosmo

Did you know in the Shorts, Cosmo was not retarded like in the show with an obnoxious voice? Butch Hartman set up the dynamic where Cosmo and Wanda are both intelligent, but where while Wanda is book smart, Cosmo is street smart. Cosmo has a deeper voice, which is thankfully less annoying.
Archive - remember when Cosmo was kinda smart?

Other characters differences

  • Vicky is more of a regular asshole babysitter than an evil mastermind.
  • Timmy's parents have their faces unseen, as to indicate to context that they are only to be seen as Timmy's real parents and not his godparents.
  • Jorgen Von Strangle is now back to the big masculine asshole to the Fairies that enjoys overworking them to death during training. One of the best things about the shorts is that Von Strangle also has a godchild, in which he torments him.

Characters before Redesign

Timmy's ParentsTootieTooth Fairy

Episodes

The Fairly OddParents!

Archive - Fairly Oddparents Season 0 episode 1 (Tara Strong re-dub)
The pilot episode of the shorts, I enjoy it a lot mostly because of Cosmo's street humor and his chemistry with Wanda.

Where's the Wand!

Archive - Fairly OddParents Season 0 Episode 3 Where's the Wand!
Cosmo's street humor and his chemistry with Wanda outshines in this episode again.

The Temp!

Archive - Fairly Oddparents season 0 episode 6 (Tara Strong re-dub)
Episode where it introduces Jorgen Von Strangle. I enjoy the build up of the plot twist of the temporary fairy that Timmy has. Also brings me back to the times when Jorgen was an asshole. Good stuff.

The Zappys!

Archive - Fairly Oddparents The Zappys season 0 episode 7
It's pretty cool to see more interactions with other godchildren and their fairies and not just Remy Buxaplenty and his fairy Juandissimo Magnifico. Every moment is perfectly timed, with the episode starting out a sideplot with Timmy's loose tooth and then finally setting up Tooth Fairy's introduction and finally the plot twist that helped the main plotline of the episode in which Timmy helps Cosmo and Wanda win the award for being the best fairies. Also where I would be interested in episodes where Von Strangle interacts with his godchild more.

Final Thoughts

I saw how every episode has not a single moment to waste. I also love how some episode title intros are also animated! In regards to worldbuilding, I wish the series dealt more in Timmy's interactions with other godchildren instead of Remy, like the shorts did. In regards to characters, Timmy is a kid, and is very imaginative like his self in the main series, but I notice he is more selfless, and will fight for Wanda and Cosmo no matter what as they are his friends. Cosmo's street humor is such a better compliment to the chemistry with Wanda's book-smart intelligence than his retardation, and it sucks it could not be in the main series. The shorts are in my opinion the best episodes of The Fairy Oddparents.

It was developed by a studio named Climax.

"Oh yeah, SpongeBob, firmly grasp it!"

The second episode of a fox in space is out now. 6 or so years after the first one.

Edit: I'm still blown away by this guy's dialogue and atmosphere. For a fan made cartoon, it's waaaay above modern cartoon shows. If only this guy or someone with his style could make something similar to this with a budget and studio. An animated noir or a actually mature show would really be popular in this current creative blackhole era.

AY YO?! The first one is legit great, but, it's getting late in my neck of the woods. Will watch tomorrow.

Speaking of The Fairly Oddparents...

It was a great show. A relic from the golden age that survived the downfall, but ultimately should have been allowed to rest in peace. Really this damn network is refusing to let any of the relics from it's golden age rest in peace. I have a love/hate relationship with it. My inner child always will try and look on the positive side. But the grown up I am see's everything for the way they really are.

So I wasn't sure where else to show this, but check out this awesome 80's style animation this guy made called "A Fox in Space", which is basically a StarFox animated series.

After years and years of doing backbreaking work, including learning blender to imitate his 70's animation style, the motherfucker finally managed to release his magnum opus part 2.

This cartoon is actually pretty good. I don't play Star Fox but I do know some aspects of the lore like Andross but I like how all the characters, including the antagonists, are easily to connect to as the audience. And bro, it's not even the fact that this dude voices good dialogue, the creator of this show, voiced 90% of the characters: James McCloud, Peppy Hare, Andross, etc. to name a few.

Gems of March

Seems like some good indie cartoons and animations have popped up this month. However, it's only 4 good ones this month from what I have seen in YouTube.

Lackadaisy - premiering on March 29

I'm more on the fence with this, as I still am a little skeptical of anthropomorphic stuff, thanks to my rant on the status on indie animations on YouTube. Despite this, I love the 2D animation style, environments, and character designs (would probably make people furries). It features the protagonists (which are cats) finding ways to sell alcohol in the 1920s Prohibition Era. Lots of references to 1920s fashion, dance, music, and architecture, maybe Lackadaisy could be the historical drama I was looking for via immersion, though the anthropomorphic stuff still annoys me.

LEGO Battle for Caen

JD Brick Productions, known for his LEGO stopmotions in historical battles, has now made one featuring the 1944 Battle for Caen in Normandy, using both stopmotion and Blender to create the battle, and featuring a lot of prominent tanks that he custom built such as the Tiger I and the Panzer III. Action, cinematography, and violence is top notch, with a theme that centers on the brutality of the war with many casualties on each side.

HALO - Remember - SFM (Western-influenced but non-Western though)

I love the animated short films from South Korean SFM animator SODAZ, as some of the Warhammer 40k films that he did were intense and had good action and cinematography. It's a shame that Games Workshop went after all of his shit and toxic fans kicked him out of doing 40k animations. SODAZ is now doing SFM films dedicated to video games that he love, such as Titanfall, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., and his recent release, Halo: Reach.
