Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

It's pretty faithful to the comics. However, I don't know if it would be succesful nowadays. The comics themselves are VERY cynical of comic book nerd culture and all except one of the main characters are irredeemable assholes.
Yeah I just read the 2015 comics and I get a very distinct feeling the goobergrape and twitter broke this man in two. It goes from this "Married with Children but about weird comic spergs" to "some fat jewish kid took this guy's lunch money in the 90's"

Actually the inspiration for the comic came from when the author was working at DC Comics. At one point one of the editors he was working under got bags of hate mail, telling him to kill himself etc. The reason for this was because he was the one that decided to kill of a minor Justice League character (Ice). This went on for days and Dorkin (the author of the comic) was shocked to the bone just how delusional comic fans could get. He made the comic as a form of detox.
Here is a video going into more detail about it:

Not that anybody cares but 2011's Thundercats reboot is probably one of the biggest examples I've seen of an animated show starting with a solid pilot (or two-part) episode and then going to shit quickly after. Except most animated shows can at least keep it up for a few more episodes while Thundercats crashed and burned almost immediately out of the gate. I've also never seen a show that hates its main character as much as this reboot did though that's probably down to one of the main writers being a massive Tygra fanboy that got into arguments with fans on DeviantArt.

oh yeah. I know the original inspiration at this point haha. I'm partly joking/more agreeing now to not wanting a modern one, having read some of the old strip vs that more modern 'ending' the guy put it's definitely got an entirely different energy to it. Dude is very clearly worn down at that point and i can totally get that. At least from this guy unless things have changed since some of these interviews.

And that is why I'm amazed Disney green lit Haileys on it, a show where the idea is a girl has to kiss a boy she likes to save the world or something like that. (Haven't watched it properly yet if only cause my corner of the high seas still has no episodes available) but hey the support cast consists of a dangerhair black gender special and a "lesbo" who barley looks like she could spell lesbianism in a spelling bee. Guess that evens it out doesn't it Disney?
The show is a weird guilty pleasure of mine. Came on while I was watching the cousins and I got more invested than I thought. It's not amazing by any means, but if you're a fan of Phineas and Ferb's/Fairly Odd-parents sitcom-y 4th wall humor then it's worth leaving on in the background. The romance thankfully is mostly on the wayside and the show doesn't try to pretend like they won't be endgame. As for any wokestuff to bitch about, Scott's sister is a lesbian and gets a gf in an episode but that's it.

Scott is best character btw.

So remember that canceled Sony Animation Popeye movie...well more images came out and information about the cancelled movie and...it is not good at all, like no wonder it was canceled. And this only proves that Gendy was never good after Hotel Transylvania 1.

holy image dump batman

that aside- damn, another casualty of shitty executive meddling
I agree that the premise isn't as good as I think everyone else assumed it was, but frankly even with all these shitty mandates and confusing choices I still think it could've been alright. I'm not a huge fan of Genndy's style, but I respect it greatly and this looks like it could've been a pretty decent addition to his ridiculous repertoire. I would've gone to see it, at least.

I think that cancelled Popeye movie does look interesting for sure. But, it was an unfortunate case of too much out of touch executives wanting to sand it down to fit modern audiences. Another thing to add, is that I don't think it means Genndy is a talentless hack just alot of times the big suits will make changes to a project to make them what they see is quote on quote more marketable to audiences regardless if it makes the project worse for the creatives.

I don't think you could really do Popeye in current year without doing violence to Segar's original (well even more violence than the previous adaptations have done). You'd have to dumb down Wimpy even more for instance. That's without even getting to the wokeshit mutilations.

And don't forget that Olive Oyl was slapsticked and beaten up almost as often as Popeye and Bluto. Obviously that'd never stand today.

Eh. I've been reading them and there *does* seem to be a lot of proto-woke virtue signaling. It's subtle but every strip has to have some obvious knock at racism or something.

Ps. I kinda wish that Northwest Comix Collective got more issues. I found that way funnier.
Something about a bunch of talentless insane artists(?) trying to out "obscure" each-other just resonated with me in a way that Eltingville Club didn't.
I think it helped that the strip had a tone that felt less like an angry scream. Eltingville Club's usual routine was a long drawn-out misery porn of a bunch of kids digging themselves deeper and deeper. Northwest was comparatively lighter and I think it's characters were more interesting and relatable.
I think that's also why I found the - obviously inspired by Eltingville - Anime Club to be better too. Less miserable.

It also helps that while consoomerism is a well trodden semi-mainstream topic, smarmy hipsters are still a relatively untapped goldmine. You get the surface observations but nothing that really captures the feeling like Northwest.

The fact that a cancelled Popeye animated movie never saw the light of day is unfortunate since if Robin Williams were still alive from that time, I would have loved for him to reprise that role into voice form.

Also, the drawings for that look pretty faithful to its original inception, so it’s probably due to the fact that higher ups and executives would have tried to “modenize” Popeye and make him look too one dimensional for the sake of not knowing why Popeye was popular in the first place.

The movie wasn't much but Williams' was a great Popeye. Too bad nearly everything else about it sucked (although Shelley Duvall was inspired casting for Olive Oyl too). I hate when perfect casting is wasted on a mediocre movie.

. As for any wokestuff to bitch about, Scott's sister is a lesbian and gets a gf in an episode but that's it.
also in episode one there's the whole "serene Williams is a black female president in a future Hailey saved from climate change"...hit every wish fufillment of some one the writing staff with that one didnt you?

Scott is best character btw.
He's still written to be something of a goofball and a little airheaded but credit where it's due, he's nowhere near as dumb and bumbling as male protagonists tend to be written these days especially in Disney shows. I think the last Disney animated show that had a male lead who wasn't written to be a bumbling oaf was milo murphy's law, and even then that's mostly because someone who understands real comedy (weird AL Yankovick) was a showrunner on it.

Anyway before the postmortem of September becomes old news you know what it reminded me of? the telephonies episode of the powerpuff girls. This time around it wasn't no dong jones, Lucas Kerfuffle or any of our usual rouges who shut us down just a technical hiccup. Much like how in that episode mojo fuzzy and him were completley innocent thanks to the gangrene gang's shit foolery.
