Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
Well, it’s less than two weeks from returning. Guess it’s about time they actually make a trailer.
"The serial killer is targeting men!"

Oh, I can already see where they're gonna go with this...
If they somehow make a cartoon version of a female version of Ted Bundy in Velma, I’ll be convinced that this is them doing an unintentionally bad joke on wanting to “KILL ALL MEN”, but somehow blame men who happen to be for the feminist movement and claiming that the killer is “misunderstood” or something like that.

This talk about western cartoon merch reminded me of an article from 2012 i read once about Pocoyo and it's changes to be more toy friendly and marketeer thoughts.

Some interesting quotes

TV networks are chasing preschoolers because unlike older kids, they haven't abandoned TV for the Internet or video games. They're also at home a lot. Britain counts more than 20 channels dedicated to television for kids, more than it has for sports. In 2005, British TV showed 10 times as many hours of children's programming -- 160,441 in total -- as a decade earlier, according to the Television Research Partnership Ltd., a U.K. research firm. Programming for preschoolers is mixed in with that for older children.

Shows for tots are also relatively expensive to make. Many use fancy computer-generated animation, for example. A seven-minute episode of "Pocoyo" costs $110,000 or $16,000 a minute. So producers turn to sales of toys and DVDs to make up the difference. A 3-year-old is unlikely to see a 30-second ad and request the toy, but parents will often buy their kids toys based on favorite shows.

Once the show becomes well known, the production team is planning to increase the prominence of male characters to help sell toys to boys.

"Children's television shows are just giant toy ads," says Gary Pope, a London-based children's marketing consultant who advised on "Pocoyo."

Successful shows can make big money from toys and other spin-offs. Viacom's Nickelodeon unit says "Dora the Explorer," one of the most popular programs for young viewers, generated about $1.4 billion in sales of toys, backpacks, clothes and other products in 2005.

The danger, some TV executives say, comes from making good toys at the expense of good television. Nigel Stone, chief executive of Platinum Films Ltd., a film and TV producer based in London, says he "resisted the lure of a well-known burger chain" in producing "Planet Cook," a cooking show. He wouldn't provide any more details.

"Young kids really know when things have been artificially inserted, even preschoolers, and, indeed, their parents, too," says Mr. Stone.
^This one is real good, highlights how toy companies aren't retarded as people think.

Working closely with the merchandising arm didn't bother Zinkia's founder Mr. Cantolla. "If you can control the creative part, it is not a very big problem to make these changes for merchandising," he says.

Hasbro made money for decades from basically toy-advertisement cartoons, and when they upped the quality of their toy advertisements with G4 MLP, that was even better for them. He-Man cartoons, also with ridiculously elaborate toys like the Castle Grayskull one, also were hugely successful.

Merch is just a thing, man.

From [Adult Swim]

We made this in a closet and flung it on television thirty years ago today. Learned some Spanish and defeated the Bee Gees. The Space Ghost Coast to Coast livestream is up now https://adultsw.im/SGLS #spaceghost #sgctc #anniversary

Adult Swim screwed key people involved with Space Ghost over every way possible. Andy Merrill and everyone else on Space Ghost were responsible for shaping the direction and the humor of Adult Swim, and Merrill's treatment by the "execs" alone is proof fans loyalty should be to the actual talent and not networks. When it's convenient, [AS} occasionally acknowledges one of the shows that helped shape Adult Swim then back then actually exists, and pretends the current regime had anything to do with it. Adult Swim eventually went from being a staple of GenX and early millennial comedy to having a bunch of shows made by L.A. improv comedy workshop nerds that nobody watches besides the creators' online friends.

I was thinking more that the writers are gonna do something like "Oh, you care more about this killer because he's killing men!" or similar shit. Knowing the writers it'll be ten times more retarded than that.
The writers will reveal that killer would be relevead to be a misunderstood heroin that is bravley fighting against the patriarch and she will have a lesbian scene with Velma.

Which was from Mattel, Hasbro's long-time rival company
I used to have that Castle Grayskull. Also that awesome giant Millennium Falcon. I beat both of them to death basically. If you had both those today in good condition in the original packaging, they'd be worth something, but oops. Poor Millennium Falcon just kept crashing into the ground, the pool, etc.

I'm getting real tired of the hacks behind western animation constantly shoving their yaoi/Yuri obsession in at every chance they get. I get it you're a coomer who got noticed by a big name studio.

‘Golden Axe’ Animated Series Based On Video Game Ordered By Comedy Central; Matthew Rhys, Danny Pudi Among Voice Cast

Comedy Central has handed a 10-episode order to Golden Axe, a new animated series based on the popular Sega video game. Produced by CBS Studios in association with Sony Pictures Television and Original Film, Golden Axe voice cast is led by Emmy winner Matthew Rhys (The Americans), Danny Pudi (Mythic Quest), Lisa Gilroy (Jury Duty), Liam McIntyre (Spartacus) and Carl Tart (Grand Crew).

Described as a hilarious and loving homage to Sega’s 1989 video game series, Golden Axe, from exec producers Mike McMahon and Joe Chandler, follows veteran warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead as they once again battle to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder who just won’t seem to stay dead. Fortunately, this time they have the inexperienced and underprepared Hampton Squib on their side.

Rhys will play Gilius Thunderhead, a grumpy battle dwarf with exceptionally poor hygiene and a chip on his shoulder.

Pudi is Hampton Squib, a naive, inexperienced first time adventurer who has dreamt of questing his entire life. He hopes his can-do attitude can make up for his inability to actually do stuff.

Gilroy portrays Tyris Flare, a fearsome battle sorceress, deadly in a fight and even deadlier with her sharp wit.

McIntyre plays Ax Battler, a barbarian warrior with a strict code of honor and sweet golden retriever demeanor. His brawn outweighs his brains, but his heart outweighs his brawn.

Tart’s Chronos “Evil” Lait, originally from Golden Axe III, is a 100% badass humanoid panther. At least that’s how Chronos describes himself. In reality he’s uncomfortably cheesy and can’t read a room.

Golden Axe is produced by CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, CBS Studios’ animation arm; Sony Pictures Television; and Original Film.

McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks) and Chandler (American Dad!) will co-write the first episode and executive produce the series, with Chandler serving as showrunner. Sega’s Haruki Satomi, Shuji Utsumi and Toru Nakahara (Sonic the Hedgehog) will also executive produce alongside Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty and Toby Ascher of Original Film. Titmouse (Big Mouth) serves as the animation studio for the series with Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski, Antonio Canobbio and Ben Kalina serving as executive producers.

Warner Bros Pictures Animation To Adapt Animal Planet Series ‘Meerkat Manor’ For Big Screen

EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros Pictures Animation is heading to the Discovery vault to adapt its Animal Planet series Meerkat Manor into an animated feature. Think Happy Feet: That George Miller-hatched franchise, which centered around tap-dancing penguins, raked in over a half-billion dollars at the global box office.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s Animal Planet first aired Meerkat Manor in 2005, with the series becoming the network’s highest-rated show over its four seasons. The Emmy-nominated series reached 204 million households in more than 160 countries on the Animal Planet platform alone.

The docuseries followed the Whiskers, a family of meerkats, as they struggled to survive in South Africa’s Kalahari Desert. Similar to Happy Feet, Warner Bros Pictures Animation will use photoreal animation to capture the Whiskers for their feature film debut.

The Meerkat Manor movie will be produced by Seth Green and Tracy Falco of The Green Room. Pic’s EPs are original series creator Caroline Hawkins as well as Clare Birks of Oxford Scientific Films. OSF is owned by ITV Studios.

“As we continue to grow our animated feature film slate, we are excited to bring the beloved Meerkat Manor from WBD’s Animal Planet to the big screen,” said Bill Damaschke, President of Warner Bros Pictures Animation. “Along with our partners Tracy, Seth, OSF and ITV Studios, we look forward to creating a photoreal animated family adventure for the next generation and seeing our meerkat friends make their feature film debut in way they’ve never been seen before.”

Said Hawkins, “It’s 20 years since we experimented with a wildlife soap opera in a London basement, and now here we are. What greater evidence could there be of the enduring appeal of meerkats? I am sure they would be thrilled at attaining stardom in Hollywood! Warner Bros is the natural home for this movie, and I am delighted to be partnering with Tracy, Seth and Bill whose visionary expertise is second to none.”

Said producers Green and Falco, “Meerkats have been secondary characters in animated feature films and it’s time they get the star treatment they’ve deserved. We believe that the heartwarming and entertaining story of Meerkat Manor, replete with all the drama, emotion and humor of the human experience, will resonate with audiences of all ages. We couldn’t be more excited to bring these lovable characters to life in a new and exciting way, with the perfect partners in Bill Damaschke, Pam Abdy, Mike De Luca and Warner Bros Pictures Animation.”

“We are honored to embark on this new adventure with the series’ brilliant creator Caroline Hawkins and Clare Birks to share the magic of Meerkat Manor with the world, both for diehard fans of the global phenomenon series and an entirely new generation of meerkat lovers.”

Green is represented by UTA, Untitled Entertainment and Lon Sorenson and David Weber of Sloane/Offer/Weber/Dern. OSF and ITV Studios are repped by attorney Stuart Rosenthal.

I am curious about the fact that Seth Green is the producer of this film, so it will probably be very much in line with Robot Chicken and Family Guy, for better or worse.

I think we need our resident family guy @fuck product placement to weigh in on this movie.
Robot Chicken used to be really funny, but soon they started getting new writers, and well...

It was also, at one point, the most popular show on Adult Swim, as well as the first original show on said Adult Swim to be nominated for an Emmy, until Rick & Morty came out, and both shows are still on the air today and have lost their popularity.

Nope, I'm more American Dad and Cleveland Show than I am with Family Guy

Warner Bros Pictures Animation To Adapt Animal Planet Series ‘Meerkat Manor’ For Big Screen
All I remember from Meerkat Manor is how meerkats will absolutely murder each other all of the time, or do things like hold lesser females babies hostage in order to gain domination/win wars. They are not really built for cute stories for the whole family, but more Game of Thrones level political backstabbing and killing.
