Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

Funny thing is people have been saying the same about the franchise since the first movie and it developed an ironic fanbase becoming the movie equivalent of the Sonic Franchise, and in recent years that ironic enjoyment eventually became sincere enjoyment of the movies.
The difference between then and now is that self-deprecating humor and pop culture jokes were a lot more novel in 2001 than 2025. (Time flies bros...)

Marvel has beaten this kind of le quirky humor into the dirt. Audiences are tired of it. Puss in Boots 2 succeeded in part because it was earnest and sincere with the story it told, if all this movie has going for it is TikTok jokes it's gonna be ripped to shreds.

Basically

Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona are getting their original VAs back while Shrek’s daughter seems to be voiced by Zendaya. The characters have also been slightly redesigned, if I were to make a comparison it looks like they took notes from the ones seen in the Spyro Reignited Trilogy.
Could be worse.
At least She's not akwafina.

This feels like the Megamind 2 trailer with just a little more money put into it

Amazing casting, they didn't even need CGI for her face.

I think ill just stick with the originals (and the puss in boots spin offs) for now, and see where this even goes because I have very little hope it will even capture the feeling of the originals.
I think the worst part is that the most recent Puss in Boots was actually really good and had a great animation style, so the fact that they aren't just copying that style entirely tells me there's some truly terrible people in charge of this...

>Shrek got redesigned

Illumination Studio and its consequences has been a disaster for the entire human race.

Shrek is going to suffer hard from the major stylistic change, because all of the Shrek Movies had character designs that were more realistic and kinda unremarkably shlubby, which I argue helps in the ironic contrast to the cartoonish gags that happen in the films. However it does kinda show the age in these films since you can tell these movies were partially designed to show off their graphical technology.

However in between Shrek 4 and Shrek 5, Dreamworks' character design drastically stylized to look more rounder and softer, at least for the humans. You could argue this is innovative in its own way, I argue that is in the case with The Bad Guys, but regardless this is not at all the style we are used to with the Shrek Franchise that always had more realistic character designs.

I frankly expected the style from Puss In Boots The Last Wish to be transferred to this movie because that was a good compromise between the highly stylized Spider-verse inspired rendering, and the kinda unflattering but appealing in it's own ugly way character designs from the old movies.

What we see in the trailer doesn't seem to be so, which is disappointing since it looks more in line with the rest of the modern Dreamwork character designs.
Also I worry that the teaser using All Star is a bad omen and makes me think the movie is banking off of nostalgia alone instead of bringing back beloved characters for one more adventure via Puss In Boots.

Felicia looks like an AI OC

Fuck, why does Shrek's face look so weird? Is it just that angle?1740690925019.png
No, his nose looks pretty drastically different. The new model's nose looks a lot more rounded, slightly bigger and more bulbous. It's like they they made it referencing fanart or made the model from memory.
Oh well. I'm sure Dreamworks will find some way to modern cinema it up and ruin it.
