Thanks, #bettercartoon, for reminding me exactly why modern western animation is such a joke in the first place.
Yeah, people are going to feel mixed about something like R&S being revived, and picking up a pitch is largely all about finding a diamond in the rough and weeding out all the rest (Sturgeon's Law does exist for a reason, after all), but is it really that hard to make a cartoon these days without any of the following?
- a lazy-ass art direction (everyone else is doing it, so why not)
- a half-assed overarching plot that exists just to blatantly follow the "muh deep lore" trend rather than genuinely wanting to plan out and craft a good story with good worldbuilding
- lead characters whose defining trait boils down to "TEEHEE I'M SO QUIRKY I'M NOT LIKE OTHER GURLZ GAIZ TRUST ME LULZ XD"
- "MAGIC AND WIZARDS JUST LIKE HARRY POTTER OMG"
- forced wokeness/"muh diversity" for the sake of Twitter brownie points
- "subtle" messages about how white cishet males are literally Hitler (again, for the sake of Twitter brownie points)
- drawn out shipping/"will they or won't they" plot lines just for 14-year-old girls to vicariously live out their fantasies
- EDIT: awkward insertion of serious issues (abuse, abandonment, neglect, troublesome exes, etc.) into a freaking kids' show that makes you question the mental stability of the writers (I'm not sure how I could have forgotten this, though in all fairness R&S is rife with this as well)
Like, at all?
