On the less awesome side of the never-made Saban coin, here's their Americanized version of
Sailor Moon.
>tfw your adaptation is so bad it causes your test audience to laugh hysterically
The good side is that this was so badly received, the next in line to get the rights for distribution of the Sailor Moon IP preferred to just fork over the extra money that Toei asked for the original anime's localization and distribution.
Another fun fact: Carl Macek was also interested in bringing over Sailor Moon to the West, and he envisioned a straight localization effort that respected all the Japanese elements of the series. The characters would retain their original names, the setting would be very much in Tokyo instead of a nondescript city in North America, etc. Essentially, he'd do what Viz did not too long ago.
It seems as if South America isn't as pozzed as the states. I was on a cruise a few years ago and they had Tooncast, which is the SA version of Boomerang.
They showed old toons unedited without any bullshit warnings that shame you for enjoying them.
Can mostly confirm this. No warnings whatsoever, but they simply don't air controversial shit at all. They maintained this policy down here even during CN's heyday in the late 90s and early 2000s, I remember those times very well.
For instance, they never aired the infamous Buffalo Gals episode of Cow & Chicken. And a good portion of those Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry and other old-school shorts that dealt with racial stereotypes, like blackface? Big nope on those too.
The same thing happened with Nickelodeon. Ren & Stimpy was considered so juicy and crass, it only aired on the MTV cartoon block together with stuff like Beavis and Butt-head. The usual cuts on Rocko's Modern Life were also there in certain bits.
With that said, Tooncast is a godsend, and literally one of the few cable channels still worth watching. Hell, it pulls better ratings than the actual CN! All it would need to be perfect is to revive the Toonami block, but that would be nearly impossible. Too much legal crap to go through, especially with Toei.
