Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

This era was filled with a whole bunch of what could have beens for super hero cartoons; around this time there was also plans for animated Ghost Rider, Shazam, Daredevil and adaptions of Youngblood and Cyberforce. And of course all the Marvel cartoons that were cancelled too early; what I wouldn’t give to see Silver Surfer to its completion.

There were plans for Ghost Rider cartoon?

Silver Surfer did the crime of making you like Eternity and Infinity, who are C-listers in Marvel, or so it seems with how they got treated :(

I recently picked up the new Tex Avery blu-rays, and they look really nice. WB did a great job cleaning them up while not reducing details, at least as far as I can tell. But man, what was up with Tex's obsession with Of Mice and Men? It's referenced multiple times and he even made a small series with characters (George and Junior) that are pretty much just cartoon versions of George and Lennie.

Was he the one that did the giant that wanted his own bunny rabbit that he'd name George?

I think it's because of mice and men was once an insanely popular book in Tex's time. Despite initial reception being mixed by most literary critics. Among adult males his age it was a hot seller and he might have been a fan. Or at least aware of how popular it was, and tried to piggyback on said popularity by parodying it.

You might ask what was up with all the Looney Tunes directors' obsession with that movie. They kept parodying it well into the 60s - remember the cartoon with the abominable snowman? Or the dumb cat who became Sylvester's sidekick in a few cartoons?

And somehow Ultraforce got made.
I keep forgetting this was a thing; rip Malibu Comics. Really goes to show what a golden age the 90s were for superhero cartoons.

IIRC, there was going to be a Ghost Rider cartoon for UPN’s Saturday morning block. The “Innocent Blood” episode of the Hulk cartoon was to be a back door pilot for the series that never happened. This was supposedly why a GR/Spider-Man crossover was nixed; the cartoon was in development and Fox didn’t want to promote a character from a rival network.

They might have just been really a fan of Lon Chaney Jr.'s performance, which really lends itself to caricature. Also the dumb (sometimes dangerously dumb) but lovable sidekick is a really good character for a cartoon.

Oh? Katie Rice you? :3

WHY IS AMERICA THE ONLY COUNTRY THAT HAS GUN PROBLEMS!?!?!

Gee? I don't know? Maybe because the so-called gun reforms are gun bans and they wanna ban all guns so they can turn America into a prison planet basically Attack on Titan with them big walls so no one gets in or out. Ironic these faggots think America has a shooting problem when the former leader of Japan got murdered live on TV and he was shot by a 41-year-old nigga that made his own gun and it worked. It's not the guns that you should be worried about? It's criminals and monsters that will not follow laws to kill more people. Trust me the Mexican Cartel is going to have new money in the black market for illegal guns if Biden bans them knowing both sides of political powers want that to happen. And in 2022 people can just create their own DIY guns rather than try and buy them anymore. Deep Web exists for the black market so try and you might but more people will die without guns than with guns you clowns.

And this is the girl John K allegedly diddled thru her pj's when she was 16? Look She has my sympathies for that, but a poor upbringing and bad experience doesn't give you grounds to act like an asshole. Shame that millennials grew up on such great cartoons only to become the generation to make some of the worst ones when it became thier turn to carry on the torch.

You've got the stories mixed up. It was Robyn Byrd that John K diddled thru her PJ's at John's place when Robyn was 16. But Katie Rice was the girl that John K attempted phone sex with when she was 16 (or was it younger?). And also Katie was the same woman that John K walked around naked in his house while they were working on that Weird Al music video.

On the less awesome side of the never-made Saban coin, here's their Americanized version of Sailor Moon.
>tfw your adaptation is so bad it causes your test audience to laugh hysterically
The good side is that this was so badly received, the next in line to get the rights for distribution of the Sailor Moon IP preferred to just fork over the extra money that Toei asked for the original anime's localization and distribution.

Another fun fact: Carl Macek was also interested in bringing over Sailor Moon to the West, and he envisioned a straight localization effort that respected all the Japanese elements of the series. The characters would retain their original names, the setting would be very much in Tokyo instead of a nondescript city in North America, etc. Essentially, he'd do what Viz did not too long ago.

It seems as if South America isn't as pozzed as the states. I was on a cruise a few years ago and they had Tooncast, which is the SA version of Boomerang.

They showed old toons unedited without any bullshit warnings that shame you for enjoying them.
Can mostly confirm this. No warnings whatsoever, but they simply don't air controversial shit at all. They maintained this policy down here even during CN's heyday in the late 90s and early 2000s, I remember those times very well.
For instance, they never aired the infamous Buffalo Gals episode of Cow & Chicken. And a good portion of those Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry and other old-school shorts that dealt with racial stereotypes, like blackface? Big nope on those too.

The same thing happened with Nickelodeon. Ren & Stimpy was considered so juicy and crass, it only aired on the MTV cartoon block together with stuff like Beavis and Butt-head. The usual cuts on Rocko's Modern Life were also there in certain bits.

With that said, Tooncast is a godsend, and literally one of the few cable channels still worth watching. Hell, it pulls better ratings than the actual CN! All it would need to be perfect is to revive the Toonami block, but that would be nearly impossible. Too much legal crap to go through, especially with Toei.
