Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

Disagree. when I watched this episode back then I didn't feel bad for what Helga did because she always does this shit when some other girl talks to Arnold.

She did it to Lila (more than once),
In the episode Married, during Helga's dream sequence Lila was literally the only one who hadn't moved on even developing a childish infatuation with Arnold that lead her to an ultimate downfall. Even her subconscious, she has to be a petty and possessive jerk.
she did it to Olga, she did it to Ruth, she did it to that one girl from the beach
All of whom (including Inga) are older than Arnold and this would have no interest in him whatsoever. So again petty and possessive for nothing.

and she did it to Patty.
Again, had no interest in Arnold what so ever Arnold was just being his usual nice self to her. Helga only had herself to blame for bringing Patty's wrath down on her, though I question if Patty let her off too easy with the whole faking a fight thing, but she did beat her up several times before in Lila's debut episode so I guess it evens out.
Helga is a possessive bitch and it would've been unbearable if she got away with it. Thankfully she never did in each of these instances. She was rightfully told she was being mean or felt guilty about it later. Cherry on top? She couldn't undo what she did. She was left to stew in it like the ending to "The Graduate".

Helga is right next to Zuko of memorable characters modern day writers wish to make but miss the fucking point.
Eh to each his own. That's how I remember feeling as a kid (should have said I not we) Now I'm honestly amazed Barlett and his team were able to make a character so hateable but at the same time sympahtic too. You want to see her suffer consequences for being a petty, arrogant, self centered jerk, but at the same time you feel sorry for her having such lousy parents and anger issues out the wazoo.

You hit the nail on the head comparing her to Zuko, Nobody knows how to write Characters like them anymore.

This indie cartoon got released on Youtube. You know its furry bait because Sabrespark likes it, but its also really impressive for an indie produced animation. Apparently its an animated adaptation of webcomic. I really love the 1920's aesthetic.

A fox in space episode 2 still impresses me more. There are parts in Lackadaisy where they leave in sketch lines, I'm sure with the excuse that it's style but it reeks of being rushed. AFIS also was mostly work done by one guy, has clear originality in its stylings, made in his free time and doesn't feel like an animated version of Tumblr. Lackadaisy has good animation and some heart behind it but it's not preferable. A fox in space is also getting its limelight taken by Lackadaisy which does leave me a bit bitter.

One of the many things I hate about Adult Animation these days is the constant use of an intentional ugly art style. I fucking despise it.
Say what you want about king star king. At least It LOOKS unique when it comes to adult animation. Every frame is like a psychedelic album cover come to life. the closest AS ever had to something as surreal and out there as KSK was superjail. Though really it should have been a done in one special like freaknik the musical not a whole ongoing show.

I hate the “animation is cinema” crowd, not because I disagree with the statement but for the fact they only ever bring it up to discuss random kids movies. There are so many great independent animated films and many great foreign films that are never talked about in favor of shit like Super Pets or whatever Disney slop is made.
It's either that or they bring up modern 'kid' shows like SU, She-Ra, or Owl House. Especially on Twitter.
Whether or not you like those shows is one thing, but it's annoying when it's always the same argument ("adult cartoons suck!! This disney/CN show is for adults too!!!") and they rarely bring up foreign content except maybe Studio Ghibli.

Yeah it's perfectly fine to like those shows but don't just put stuff you personally like if you're going to treat animation as cinema.

The 2000s was the final bastion of great animation. We hoped the 2010s would be another stepup, but it's gotten worse since 2011. The same with most things these days. Only having rare good things under a pile of dirt.
Good and fun animation died with Robotomy.
Not surprising since this was the same team behind Chowder before CN abruptly gave them the boot for producing an expensive cartoon that Euros and other countries refused to air for being too 'antisocial'.

No shit. I think with garbage like Big Mouth it's that they'd be veering dangerously close to child porn, but they can claim the art is so goddamn ugly nobody would conceivably jerk off to it (they would be lying of course).

If for some goddamn reason I'm watching cartoons instead of real life, it's maybe because I want something more pleasing to the eyes than reality, and not something tacky and repulsive.

It's almost a toss-up as to whether nauseatingly cutesy shit like beanmouth and nauseatingly ugly shit like Big Mouth is worse.

I would agree but I just kind of lost interest in the show after the Mordecai relationship drama started going overboard; I just prefer to think of Exit 9B as the ideal finale (even if it was a season premiere).
It still managed to be surprisingly consistent with quality, even despite the stupid love story arc that was never considered necessary to begin with.

Most of modern adult animation has to be either things. It has to be a comedy with extensive swear words and even copy the same artstyle as either Simpsons, Family Guy, Brickleberry or Rick & Morty or if it's an action series, it has to copy the same Japanese anime formula. It's completely stupid and it's been like this for over half a decade.

There is an art to ugly styles, sadly that art is lost. Shows like South Park and Beavis & Butthead were made intentionally ugly and stiff, but at least they still had charm and some level of pleasing visuals. Same could go for many Adult Swim animations. Aqua Teen Hunger Force ain’t exactly a looker, nor animated that well, but the designs are still leagues better than most adult animation today.

I agree. I think Exit 9B would’ve been a great series finale. It began with the park and it should’ve ended with the park.
