Different time, plus the original writer either didn't think that through or thought it'd make for good drama...sides my memory of the books is spotty but didn't Scott agree to wait till she became legal with almost no complaints?. Again it's been a while even for me so I could be remembering it wrong.


But anyways I'm a month late to mention this but I wanted to move this conversation from it's thread to avoid going off topic.

Raven from the 2003-2006 Teen Titans is probably my favorite comic book character of all time.

It's so hard to believe it's now been over 20 years since the first episode of Teen titans aired. It was made just as the 11 year run of the Bruce timm DCAU was wrapping up with the justice league finale ! year later. Teen Titans has so many memorable episode; nevermore, nothing to fear, haunted, mad mod, the list goes on. Even if you never read a comic in your life it filled you in with the details and made it enjoyable as it's own thing independent but still influenced by the immortal Wolfman/Perez era of titans comics.

I never saw that movie or read the comics or whatever they were, but I really liked the actress who played the main chick in the movie (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, years before she completely fucked up her face with plastic surgery like they always do in hollyweird). I enjoyed her as an actress and liked her look in that movie because she reminded me so much of a couple girls I went to highschool with. Then years later I found out what that movie was about and that she was basically the BPD girl meme and so many things just clicked in my head all at once.

It wasn't an accident that O'Malley started the story with "Scott Pilgrim is dating a high schooler." It's not window dressing and he didn't forget the age of consent - it's to establish Scott as a loser. He's a jobless bum who creeps around a high school since he's got no real friends and guns for inexperienced partners because he's lazy - just like Ramona.

This reminds me of how I've always been shocked at how little media literacy there is surrounding Scott Pilgrim - so much so that O'Malley's other work is basically an outlet for him to lament that a bunch of young mid-00s nerds looked at the cast as an ideal to aspire to instead of giant failures you should grow up and avoid becoming. It's the kind of thing that could have a lot of weight in an adaptation, especially given the "told you so" kind of sting it could have now that the original readers who pattered their life after media have had time to stew in their poor decisions. But that would require an entire production, from studio to publisher, to be on the same page and not be the same sad soys that roped themselves into thinking Scott was literally them 15 years ago. I'm holding out a little hope for that happening but I've been burned too many times by modern media to hold my breath.

Yeah I think it is a genuinely charming film and the comic is a classic, but the late 2000s tumblr/something awful attempt at video game humour that just continued into the 2010s was just excessively overdone. Honestly considering how retro indie market game culture dominated the 2010s and stagnated Scott Pilgrim as an entity doesn’t seem dated at all. It had the same similar hipster fanbase of tumblr girls and homestuck ‘gamer’ fans in 2010 as it does today. I don’t know if that says something about how much media has stagnated in the past 10+ years but it’s something to consider.

Art style looks like shit and I’m wary of any cartoon with a girl as the protagonist at this point because I have yet to see a single one from the last decade in which that was done well (it’s either an obnoxious mouthpiece for the creator’s ideals or a self-insert).

That's why i can't enjoy Molly McGee as much as i want too.. Molly herself is fine as far kid/girl protagonists go but then we get episodes like carbon zero heroes. which have hints of that problem.

speaking of carbon zero heroes at least loud house acknowledged not EVERYONE has the means or money to convert to green energy, and there are people in the world who legit need non renewables and there's no option to change that in such short time, despite what the eco brats cry and cry about all day.

Just sayin in this day and age a middle ground on an issue addressed by western animation is a fucking miracle.
