Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

He did a bad job since he picked his avatar from a show that has practically fucking everyone from MLP except Tara Strong.
Yeah because Littlest Pet Shop was a Canadian production and she wasnt allowed on it because of SAG-AFTA rules..........though how the Ducktales reboot got the voice of Pinkie Pie/Fluttershy involved in one episode despite being primarily involved in Canada which means she should not have been allowed to do so because again of union rules

Dunno why you're shitting up the thread with random screenshots Invisible Crane but I'll argue this one:

First, the only way something can be a non-argument is if nobody is arguing ANYTHING and just talking. You can argue about absolute facts like the sky being blue for an hour. (Don't underestimate stubborn/crazy/autistic people)

Second, people like what they like and sometimes when they venture out in to other things, they get taken aback by how different it is from the thing they like and it's up to them if they want to like it or hate it. Nobody else's. The people who do like different things are the people who live interesting lives. They people who don't are, well, weebs and spergs.

Third, and I won't open the Calarts can of worms too big, but it's true using a school's name to sum up a whole decade of animation is sucky. HOWEVER Calarts is THEE LEADING SCHOOL for animation. It's smack dab in the land of Hollywood for god's sake! These are the people who are making and breaking what we see on screens.

And what we're seeing is starting to look the same.

Cartoon spergs and weebs are one in the same: They think their form of animation is the truest form of the medium when a 2-second loop of a blinking eye can have just as much beauty and valuable exeprience than seasons and movies of their shit. East sees West as ugly blobs of serious issues with pop songs everywhere, and West sees East as thinly veiled TentaclexSchoolgirl porn with giant robots fighting magical girl senseis. Both of them? Need to calm down.

As for that last bit, I take it this idiot has never watched an online animation in their fucking life because THOSE are the people who give the bird to mainstream cartoons AND make things that aren't like them at all. (See: HotDiggedyDemon, Harry Partridge, OneyNG, Filmcow, and basically all of MondoMedia.)

The name was taken from John K., who used it to describe any style he didn't like.

The funniest part of white knights like these is that the objects of their defense will never know they exist; if anything, they’ll be wondering why you’re in such a controversial forum to begin with.

@Shokew, explain yourself, my guy. What the hell are you doing on these grounds of autism?

I can think of a few reasons, actually. I know you'll still all label me autistic (as I won't think anything more of me than usual - hell, I expect to be thought even less of after that, just like most people are here, anyway, so why the fuck not?

What can I say? I love cartoons too much, especially for my age, anyway. Still, i don't think you're ever too old to appreciate the medium. That's why I'm on there, if at all, to begin with - my love for the medium, a will to want to see it get better with time, and the sense of community I don't always get from here, honestly. It feels good to be with people who share some of my thoughts or opinions of things there. Not like there's much love for the medium here, unless it's mostly old school fare, anyway.

As for @Invisible Crane..... I can honeslty do bad all by myself, thank you very much. I don't need that guy's help, nor did I ask for that kind of attention in any way, shape, or form. While I do stand by CalArts being an empty insult in some cases... In most, well - there's a reason people be dissing on CalArts, and I do agree with a lot of you on this much (if not more...) - too many shows in this past decade and ongoing look the same / too cheap for their own good in this medium, thanks to that school and its train of thought (at worst.). That's why anime has got the edge over the West so much as of late, too. It stinks that both can't be equals in quality / quantity, either way.

And @Shokew, word of advice, don't use the same username on confirmed hives of autism. Just throwing that out there.

True. Regardless, I ain't leaving that site anytime soon. I like the community there. I just wish it was a little more fun like with you guys, for example, more than anything.

The name was taken from John K., who used it to describe any style he didn't like.

John K. was referring to an entirely different style of art, though, from a different era of CalArts. Anyone still using the term is probably referring to Steven Universe-style beanmouth stuff that is often off-model or otherwise lazy.

Most of the people who created today's cartoons didn't go to CalArts, as has been rehashed, but the thing is, John K. genuinely had no meaning for it other than "any style I don't like."

There's a blog post from 2007 where he describes "CalArts style" as encompassing post-70s Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks, Don Bluth and Tim Burton... so, like I said, anything he hated.

Most people using it now aren't using it to mean what John K. hated, though, but a particular style that originated in (or is at least associated with) Adventure Time, the creator of which did in fact attend CalArts. The prolific imitators of this general style are what led to a backlash against it (although AT can't be blamed for the vices of its imitators).

On the subject of CalArts, the backlash was already set even as far back as the early to mid 2010s; back then it was called the Tumblr or SJW artstyle, where every piece of fanart had noodle limbs, bright pastel colors and red noses/knees/shoulders. It turned into full blown “CalArts” when professional shows all seemed to have started ripping off Steven Universe (hence the meme) and finally hit it’s apex with Roar. It seems like shows are starting to move away from this artstyle but who knows what artstyle is next.

In other news:
-Both Glitch Techs and Season 7 of The Clone Wars drop today.
-SU is finally wrapping things up in March by releasing the final episodes. A trailer is available.
-Hilda and Rick & Morty are set to release new episodes this year but an exact date has yet to be confirmed for either of them.
-Amidst all this, Owl House will continue to releasing it’s episodes on it’s usual schedule. Hope the competition doesn’t kill it.

And yet he hated the styles of post 1965 H-B, FIlmation and Marvel and never referrred to them as CalArts. Unless he just lumped them in with Disney and DreamWorks as well, in which case that's probably the most outright r.etarded thing to think.

So... Anybody's thoughts on the latest episode of The Owl House (Eposode 6 - Hooty's Moving Hassle)? It dropped just today.

Watched the new episode, its nice to see more of The Boiling Isles. Curious why the Conjuring even worked despite luz being a human unless she is starting to develop a natural source of magic somehow. The demon hunters are a neat idea and hope we get to see more strange creatures and characters. Judging by episode 7's description I predict Luz's prank gone too far will be set upon Gus.
