What Are The Worst Character Designs You Have Ever Seen?

I find these stills hilarious. The background are drawn to scale, but the characters are like 20 heads tall and also shrunken. The background designers and animators were probably reading two different design documents.
girly comics draw people weird, so when you adapt the girly comic people and then put backgrounds in it gets super weird

Maxine from The Savage Dragon.

Who is Maxine and what is The Savage Dragon, you might ask? The Savage Dragon is one of the first comics published by Image Comics when it was formed in the 90s. You may remember Image Comics from the much more popular Spawn franchise, and, of course, every emo 90s girl's second favorite comic (after Sandman), The Maxx. While most Image creators eventually moved on to bigger and better things, Erik Larsen stayed at Image and has written and drawn The Savage Dragon for the last 25 years.

Over time, the original Savage Dragon was retired and his son, Malcolm Dragon, became the book's protagonist. Maxine, the subject of this post, is Malcolm's second wife.

Maxine is an adult woman. She is shown having explicit sex with Malcolm dozens of times. There was a story about her being raped and humiliated by the villain.

This is how she's designed:

Everything about Maxine is horrifying. Maybe its Larsen being "clever" and intentionally making his readers uncomfortable, or maybe he's an FBI plant using his comic to flush out dangerous pedophiles. In either case... yuck.

She looks pretty childlike in that panel but looking at the other pages you linked I don't think I'd feel uncomfortable or confuse her for a minor. Her body looks too mature. She's just looks like a immature late-teen or young adult who wears bright clothes. Nothing too horrifying.

Ugly face though.

This art style is so obviously ugly but I've finally figured out what makes it so exceptionally ugly for me, even in comparison to other shows that use a similar style. These characters have adult physiques but were given weird childlike proportions and faces that just make them all look like ripped toddlers. This is the animated equivalent of the muscular babies in renaissance paintings. Lion-O and Panthro in particular have a lot of muscle detail but they also have huge heads, stubby limbs, tiny wristless hands, huge eyes, button noses, and chubby baby-fat cheeks.

It's not even an inherent limitation of the style, either. Jasper from Steven Universe doesn't have this Buff Toddler problem because her limbs and face are proportioned better. Pearl has really big eyes but her bigger nose and longer limbs balance that out and stop her from looking too childlike. These characters just look like someone didn't know whether to make them kids or adults so they went for both.

Also Cheetara's giant unibrow reminds me of people on Tumblr who'd draw "realistic" versions of characters with stretch marks, acne, and leg hair that looks like cactus prickles.
When even Steven Universe has a better art style than your shitty cartoon, it's time for you to never work on animation ever again.

There was a Little Lulu reboot where the characters were aged up?
Yeah, but it got cancelled back in 2015 due to low sales in Brazil, of all places.

For some reason it was a trend to age up well established female characters and make them teenagers in the Brazilian comic world. The same thing happened to Monica’s Gang, and both that and the Little Lulu reboot were best-sellers down in Rio back in ‘09.

To give credit, the Monica reboot doesn’t try to hard to look unreasonably manga “kawaii desu uwu” and has a healthy balance between a manga style and that of the original comic. Even the creator of the original works on it.

That looks more like modern-ish day Archie than it does manga.
Makes me wonder if they had Archie in Brazil just now, I was told once they never published Archie in the UK for instance, they only knew them because of the 60's bubblegum rock cartoon group.

I'm sure Archie comics have been translated into Portuguese at some point in the last... what? 70 years, though, as far as I can tell from Google, Archie was never big in Brazil.

I should add that I wasn't even criticizing the Monica's Gang style by comparing it to mid-2000s Archie, it's a solid style for that kind of tween-oriented comic (or at least I assume from the art style that Monica's Gang is aimed roughly at a tween/younger teen demographic like traditional Archie comics were).

I have something to contribute

I know this is kinda low hanging fruit, after all, the creator of this webcomic is a tranny sjw who believes that everything she makes is a masterpiece, but I fucking hate this thing with a passion.

Theres so much I could post about this piece of shit but instead of doing that I'll show you all some 'highlights'.

Btw, she doesn't improve.

At all.

I swear, she actually gets worse.

EDIT: I just realise I didn't exactly say why I thought the designs were bad. Whoops.

Its bland, and I swear to god she's ripping off Azumanga Daioh, and probably a bunch of other anime shit too, but specifically this one. Why am I so focused on this one? Because she has the most detailed authors notes for just about every page of this thing and has mentioned it quite a few times in relation to her own stuff.

I always thought this one had some potential at the start, since it felt like she was giving the characters more personality than just their label, but it flew off the rails pretty quickly when she started just adding tokens for whatever identity she could think of. Major wall of text problem, too. People don't just stand around and spew out exposition all day, but that's most of what this comic is.

"Simba the King Lion" always got on my nerves. Not only for the cheap animation made in a North-Korean studio, not only for the blatant plagiarism of 10k of different stories (The Jungle Book, Jungle Taitei, Hokuto no Ken, Bambi...) but also for the character design that showed that the animators never saw a lion cub in their life:

I mean, it looks like a bear. Then probably they realized that cub Simba didn't look like a lion, so adult Simba is basically a tracing of Simba from The Lion King:

It's amazing what some Italian sleazeball producers can come up with when they have money to throw around. Using a North Korean studio to pump this out was just icing on the cake than to go for a more reputable outfit.

It happens more often than not, the last time with this:

'Adrian', written and produced by Adriano Celentano, singer and SJW. The character design is decent, the story and the animation, in the other hand...
Anyway, when it was aired it came out that a North Korean animation studio contributed to the series, at least at the beginning of the production. Ironic, especially because 'Adrian' is a story about fighting dictatorship and tyranny.

I bet it was! I see the series also has it's work farmed out to a studio in Beijing as well, I could see how that would slip through the cracks like that.

This is just bad artwork, not bad character design.

I thought Adrian was canceled before the first episode even aired. I'm going to assume it's not good but is it at least entertainingly bad?

In my opinion yes, especially because of the story and the dialogues. Everything is so...surreal, and badly structured and lacking of continuity and preachy and ridiculous. 4 episodes were aired before the network called it quits, because the audience ratings were abismal, too low for a series that costed more than 20 million euros and needed 10 years of work to be done. If some of you are morbidly curious, you can find one episode, with English subs, on Dailymotion.
