So Youtuber SMG4 has gotten into some drama because he recently decided to redesign some of his characters, including himself and well....
At risk of exposing my autistim, I am a fan of SMG4, and I was honestly mostly OK with the redesigns, excluding Boopkins. The Guardians were already partial stand-ins for their voice actors and SMG4 had been edging into that design in merchandise for a while now. The fact that it was explicitly a precautionary measure against copyright also helped me feel more sympathetic in comparison to some if he did it simply because he could and made everything look extra-bad. After all, an original character is easier to defend than an honest-to-god Mario Recolor.

This shit is frightening to look at

He looks like both a truck driver and the whore he just murdered.
That's a woman. Basically, the manga artist and creator of Beastars should have stuck to doing anthro animals instead of moving onto humans. Their humans look.....uncanny valley and not quite right somehow. Their new series is about a buff Santa, who shares a body with Sanda, a 14 year old boy.

This is one of those cases where the manga author is an excellent writer but a middling artist. Never cared for the art in Beastars as the quality of some of the panels was hilariously bad. The only thing that kept it engaging was the characters, story and the world building. This project is going to be a repeat of that scenario. The anatomy is god awful and FFS what is wrong with their eyes and their hands?! It was less grating when used on animal character but in humans it just looks off.

Why is the boy posed like that? He looks like a woman. Or a bootleg Rukia from Bleach. Is this some yaoi shit or fujo bait?

Secondly, why am I getting bad Count Olaf fanart vibes from that Santa? Honestly, if you haven't mentioned it was supposed to be him, I wouldn't have guessed it was meant to be him in a million years.

Yeah, to be honest i can kind of agree... at least the redesigns look better than some of the OC's he's been slowly adding.

they made the frankensteinian abomination a they/them:lit:
Honestly, the whole franchise was infected with leftie bullshit. They made the werewolf into a missing cast member for Validate. They made the vampire girl a short chubby chick.

I thought this was a niche doll series with a neat little concept, what's all this libtard fuckery doing here? :cringe:

The doll fandom got infested with lunatics

This guy from the Kingdom Hearts franchise. What? You don't recognize him?

"What's so bad about his design?" you might ask. Well, nothing. He's your standard mysterious identity-concealed character — perfect for your standard JRPG main antagonist. The problem arises when this design is applied to roughly half of the original main cast of the Kingdom Hearts series either with the hood up or down.

Imagine how much more memorable these characters would've been if their costumes were as creatively designed as their weapons. I could tolerate the prevalence of black coats if they were concealing the wearers' true costumes underneath whenever it was time to fight them, but no. We could've gotten unique costumes incorporating spikes and sharp angles like the lesser nobodies and their castle headquarters, but instead, Nomura decided to be cheap.

I know that there are slight variations in each member's coat (Axel's has tight sleeves while Demyx's has pointy shoulders), but those aren't different enough, especially from a distance. They are certainly not as memorable as the Espadas' or Sternritters' costumes from Bleach, and those factions have clear aesthetics going for them. Nomura can design characters, sometimes really well, and he's also capable of designing distinct characters belonging to the same faction, but I guess it saves money to only design the head.

It gets really stupid when it comes to characters like the Master of Masters and Luxu, both of whom should have their own unique designs considering their positions in their organization. At this point, black coats have become less of a cool design and more of the KH equivalent of the pink and black missing texture from Source engine games. This parody video puts it best.

My niece loved these dolls. What's odd to me is that Clawdeen's family had a pretty wide range on skintones, making them some of the most diverse dolls without screaming how diverse they were. Extended diversity not needed. Next they'll say she's a troon.

And why would a vampire be chubby?

So I couldn't find a pic of this because I guess it's too new. But Vesta from the Puzzle & Dragons Gung Ho collab... OMG. The initial form is cute despite being a tad cluttered. But the evo is a sight to behold. WTF is that anatomy? Dat face. :cringe:

It looks like the artist let their six year old draw the face or the artist was really drunk by the time they got to that part. It's so unintentionally derp. The concept is interesting. I like the melting bodysuit and the colors used. But the clutter and the inability to tell where limbs end is almost as bad as the face. Does she have a robot arm or is she holding some sort of weapon? Why isn't she machine type? I clearly see lil' robot buddies and I think she's got some cybernetics although it's hard to tell with the clutter.

I really hope the artists move beyond this clutter phase or they make an option where you can choose any evolution as a skin. Because I hate staring at a mess of clutter. Sometimes it infects even the thumbnail. Same with the derp faces or creatures where you aren't even sure where the face is.

Which just reminded me that there was this old Instagram post that all the lefties took as gospel that Clawdeen was a TOTES SAPPHIC LESBIAN.

This is ironic because the current generation made her wet for the gorgon guy when she, to my knowledge, didn't have a love interest at all before.
And why would a vampire be chubby?
She was sucking the blood of Amberlyn Reid.

Gonna disagree with this - I think it's vice versa.

The standard JRPG main antagonist can have his (or her) face hidden, but he should have a unique design. A generic black robe is just bad design for most purposes. Usually it doesn't make the wearer blend in - you don't know who it is, but it's always the same character, and the designer has thus made the character less cool for no reason. If it's not the same character, the deception often relies on the above genre convention, but characters in-universe wouldn't even think to fall for it.

In Kingdom Hearts it's good design because it's these guys' uniform. Yes, it's visually boring and looks stupid on the cast, but it helps them stand out against a vast variety of non-original characters. And it's excellent for marketing: this dumb coat is something a kid might convince a parent to buy, and then proceed to wear to school and around town. You can just be one of these assholes 24x7 without looking too weird. It's an extraordinary gift to young sperglords and spergladies.
