What are you playing right now?

Just popped the platinum trophy for Vampyr - it being free on PSN gave me an excuse to play through it again without snacking on civilians. I figured being under leveled would be a significant challenge, but other than the penultimate boss fight there weren't any big hurdles, and it was hilarious seeing NPCs start giving the PC shit for being a murderous vampire only to run out of steam when they realise that, no, this dude doesn't eat people.

The final fight was hysterically easy.
Basically, the more of a murderous lunatic you are, the stronger the boss is, to the extent she can blow through the game's level cap. Keep your impulses in check however, and she'll be a lower level than you making it a cakewalk.

I'm dissapointed there's no news of a sequel. I'm not a fan of DontNod, but you really couldn't tell this was from the same people who made Life is Strange.

Söldner: Secret Wars. Do you like Eurojank games and arcade-y military simulator shooters like Battlefield or Joint Ops? Do you not mind shit graphics and animations? If so, you might want to check out this game. It's more or less of a community revival of a really obscure, failed 2000's german shooter notable for featuring tons of weapons and vehicles, as well as a huge amount of destructable environment. And somehow, it's still getting updated and played in fucking 2020, i think people from the original studio are even working on it. It's pretty impressive despite looking so unpolished.

If i had to list the pros and cons of this one:
  • loads of weapons and vehicles (including Stinger and Javelin missiles, laser pointers and laserguided rockets, mobile spawn trucks and ships, radar jammers, and even fast civilian vehicles like cars or ATVs) to pick from
  • fun customization for your character
  • a RTS-like Commander mode like in Battlefield 2, you can even change the camo and logo for your team
  • destructable buildings and terrain on EVERY map
  • no real singleplayer
  • awful dated graphics
  • easy to basecamp (mostly if you're playing on a server with infinite money, or on a huge map)
  • gunshots can be TOO accurate, any weapon could as well be a sniper rifle if you can see your enemy from far
The playerbase is also pretty dead but sometimes there are events which fill up servers, i played it a few years ago and had a good time with it.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein: For when you wanna give those Nazi sumbitches a nice filling of 12.7mm death from your experimental ww2 era chaingun while dodging super soldiers with lightning guns. THE definitive alternate history FPS to me.

Broke out the Metroid Prime Trilogy after sitting on it for years. People talk up the controls, but having to sit a certain way and fight with the cursor picking up every small movement is just a total pain in the ass. And shit like the inventory and map buttons being on the bottom on the Wiimote out of the way is more bullshit.

Recently bought Receiver 2. Obsessed with it.

It's amusing that the developer Wolfire's earlier game, Overgrowth (which I haven't played), took like 13 years to create while Receiver was created in a week by the same devs for a game jam. Both are well-received games, but I think the latter is far more successful.

Basically, in both Receiver games you explore randomly generated/assembled worlds looking for audio tapes. You're armed with a random firearm (assigned when you spawn) that is fully modeled and fully functional. You'll never see this game on consoles because a keyboard is necessary... the controls are too complicated for a controller. One button to eject a magazine, another to insert bullets, another to remove bullets, another for the safety, another for cocking the hammer (on guns with visible hammers), a two-button combination to check the chamber, etc. It's intimidating at first, but it's really satisfying when you finally get the muscle memory sequences down.

In the game you try to avoid or destroy hostile, mechanical turrets and flying drones, the nature of which I won't try to explain here because the story is so weird. These enemies are also fully modelled and functional, and targeting different components will give you different results. (Shooting the cameras or sensors will blind them, taking their motors out will stop them from moving, etc.)

I put an embarrassing number of hours into the original... and then mods came along adding more firearms. And then it got Steam Workshop support, adding even more firearms, level types, etc. You could play Receiver forever, and that's partially because there's nothing else like it.

Until the sequel, obviously. It's absurdly difficult, but you always want to try again when you fail. The mood of the game is awesome (sort of a cyberpunk, surreal, beautiful and empty, endless nighttime world with hints of Buddhist philosophy), and a big part of that is the soundtrack, which is similar to but better and larger than the original game's. I also like how the weird lore hinted at in the first game has been greatly and successfully expanded into something truly unique. The original lore kind of felt like it had been made up quickly, but they managed to make something much more coherent for the sequel.

If you like FPSs, challenging Roguelike gameplay, and unique indie game experiences, give Receiver 2 a chance. You can skip the original entirely, though some people prefer the gameplay structure in the first to the second.

Played and beat Ikenfell because it was free on gamepass and the combat looked interesting,

5/10 skip, It's a decent enough jrpg mechanically and the combat can be really difficult and fun but holy shit it hits every bad gender politics stereotype to a point where it almost feels like satire. The main cast contains two lesbians, a non binary with zir pronouns, a black kid (the only cis male character and amusingly a must-use at all times due to having the game's only steal skill) and a drag queen/cross dresser/transgender? who absolutely has to be a piss take and is also the best dps in the game by a mile. Out of those only the drag queen is at all memorable since they're basically an extended homage to Flea from chrono trigger.

Otherwise the only really memorable thing is a sudden whiplash in the third act where you go from semi-cutesy bosses and upbeat combat music to horror territory and the difficulty spikes way up and the boss music gets good,

E: Also the game hints at the existence of postgame quests that aren't actually present in the game yet (datamining is fun) so there's that.

Well got back into planetside 2, vanu is still such a shit faction made for people who can't aim and gotta rely on hitscan, and the balance is actual dog shit.

But I keep crawling back to it.

Just started playing Thief 2014. I've never played the originals, and from what I've heard this one was suppose to be cancer-aids. I'm not very far but, it doesn't seem that bad. I dunno, maybe if I was a fan of the originals I'd be more upset.

Just started Xenogears for the first time.

And enjoying it thus far, just got to the sand crawler part in the beginning

Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair, 1001 Spikes and ittle dew.

Yooka is pretty great for basically being tropical freeze on more of a budget.
1001 spikes is a pretty solid precision platformer and I like it's personality even if it's kind of a lot like la mulana plot wise.
ittle dew is like Zelda if Zelda actually had puzzles that required a brain.

It's pretty cringey but it's a good weeks play. Some of the puzzles aren't intuitive but I never had to use guides.

In the Halloween theme, I am playing Deadbolt, from the same studio that made Risk of Rain. It's a lot of fun.

Been binging on Red Dead Redemption 2 the last few days. Enjoying it but with stuff that can be permanently missed, I pretty much am restarting a new game and braving through the first chapter because fuck you Rockstar for all the shit I can miss. Other than that, I enjoy the main character in how one can customize Arthur as pre-defined character. He's up there with CJ and Jimmy out of all the games Rockstar made. Before that, I gave the remaster of Destroy All Humans a try. Fun game but I barely had much memories of the first but I noticed there was enough of a difference between it and the original in how they handled the final boss.

Zombie Army 4, it's not a great game but is great fun & suitably spooky in the lead up to Halloween. They just had an update with a new level & gun so trying those out.
Have they added crossplay yet? It's dead on PC.

Never heard of it, googled the title and how the fuck could you have expected anything but a special genitalia shower from this shit?

I did expect one and went in expecting a Validate-level trainwreck but it's not that bad. More like the main writer outlined a servicable-but-not-excellent plot and the B-writers poured genderfluid all over it and some managed to stick in the cracks.

That art though, wow. I can understand why the preview page just has a couple combat screenshots and no 'official' art.
