I recently tried South African style biltong. The local/freshmade biltong is hard to come by in burgerland, but some South African expats have set up a big production line in my area, and I have had access to some of the pre-production batches. Unique flavor compared to American style beef jerky, and it has a softer consistency too, but still keeps as well since the vinegar marinade and air/sun drying process has an equivalent preservative effect compared to meat-smoking. Pretty filling, too. Now I can easily imagine how the Boers in the old days could live off nothing but biltong, rusks, and coffee for weeks on end during their lengthy treks and campaigns in the African veld.
Hopefully these guys can settle on a local distributor so I can buy the stuff on the regular. Apparently they have been getting a good response from the redneck boomer demographic in the pro-fishing and NASCAR circuits, so they might even sign on with Walmart or some gas station chains.
