Containment What If?

200$ a month sounds about right. That's how much his :tugboat: could carry in Poland. Autism/Asperger syndrome awareness seems low here compared to the USA. There are no aspie benefits. That 200 bucks would come from unemployment benefits, but he would have to be registered as looking for job to get them, and accept whatever jobs the employment office finds for him. And I think the benefits only last for 2-3 years tops, so he would actually have to work and try not to get fired.

All in all, he would have a hard time adjusting, not only to the borderline poverty. Nintendo games and consoles are very unpopular and hard to come by here. Most people only played the old Super Mario Bros. for the Pegasus (a hardware clone of the Famicom) and maybe the first generation of Pokemon before Nintendo faded into obscurity in this part of Europe. Their merchandise is really expensive here, and hardly anyone even knows Sonic the Hedgehog, so Chris would feel very lonely with his Sonichu.

We also don't take kindly to foreigners or strikingly abnormal people here. Chris would probably be made fun of on the streets a lot, exacerbating his paranoia. He would be happy to see that there is almost no niggos to be found, though. Or any races other than Caucasian, for that matter.

He would be bullied mercilessly and forced to get a job. It's funny he moans about Virginia but he has quite a cushy carefree life there compared to elsewhere.

can anything stop the grimace?

It's that darn Hamburglar he should be worried about!

I know Chris may not survive in Denmark well.

Really? Denmark always seemed pretty live and let live to me. If anything, it would be the place I could imaging Kaka having some STRAIGHT joy boy gal pals to asspat and trade makeup secrets.

It is a bigger possibility that the house will clean itself.

Christiania... And don't forget Denmark is the Lego-capital.

If Chris cleaned his room, he'd kill this poor soul in the process...

Save Marjorie.

I been to Denmark before. I think what's going to set Chris off a lot is the relatively liberal aspects of the Danish culture. Denmark is known for beer and they make their own in their bars, there's some feminism going on and they wouldn't take kindly to Chris, and even though Denmark is known to be tolerant towards the homos, there are a good number of people there who frown upon that. As for their social attitudes towards people with autism, like in the US, it depends. I can see Chris obsessing over Legos a lot and considering his Internet infamy, the Danes would be really pissed off if they saw him in their country. Oh and they frown upon McDs a lot and fat people too hence there's a Danish law that bans trans fat. So Chris living in Denmark wouldn't be any better than him living in the states. If anything, his life would be worse there.

Israel has lots of different communities, some of which might be willing to tolerate Chris (in the same way he's tolerated in his current environment) and some in which he will definitely not fare well i.e there's no way that Haredi ultra-orthodox Jews will take kindly to his tomgirl shit, and it would not be wise for him to enter an Arab village either. If he lived in Haifa (where I live as well) I think that socially he would not be in a worse position than his current one. He would be viewed as weird by most people (even the most secular and liberal ones) but for the most part the reactions he will get will not be worse than the ones he receives in Ruckersville and Charrlotseville. Most secular Jews can speak English more or less fluently so he shouldn't have any additional problems making friends, unless of course people find out about his antisemitism.

Now about those Israeli tugboats... I'm not quite versed in how the welfare system of my country works, but I'm assuming that some kind of a government program that will give him a tugboat no less fancy than his American one. Israel is overall more socialistic than the US. He would most likely not be drafted to the IDF should he receive an Israeli citizenship, as his autism makes him ineligible for service and likewise I don't think new citizens at his age are drafted (and if they do they only do a symbolic service of a couple of months).

His biggest problem with Israel would probably be the country's security situation. When BlueSpike tried to talk with Chris about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict Chris declined to continue, saying that he doesn't like bad news. I'm sure that Chris wouldn't like living in a country where a large chunk of the news is dedicated just to that subject, although Chris might not learn Hebrew at all since it would be too much effort for him when he can converse with most people in English.

I'm sure that Chris wouldn't handle it well should Haifa suffer another ongoing attack of rockets from the north (like it did in the summer of 2006), a scenario I don't find completely unlikely considering recent events in Syria.

I hear Detroit is offering free homes to authors. Maybe its time for Chris to blow on out of town and move to Michigan.

His life would be marginally better, as it will be random drug addicts attacking him instead of his own mother. As smoke said the tugboat is federal so he would even get to keep what the roving gangs of Juggalos don't steal. Most fast food places have been ransacked for scrap metal and have been taken over by squatters, so he will be forced to eat something else, though there is a good chance that he would get shot going to the grocery store.

Woah woah woah... did you say free real estate?

I would love to see him try and get by in ancient Sparta. Might actually have done him some good.
You seriously think they wouldn't have exposed him, or he wouldn't have accidentally been killed playing with the other kids?

I really think he would have done okay in medieval England. Especially if his parents were on good terms with a feudal lord: those guys typically held an advowson, which gave them political control of the local church, and meant they could usually stick useless people into the clergy where they'd at least be cared for. Not that I think Chris could have made it as a lay priest, but he wouldn't make a bad monk.

Sounds like a what if
What if it wasn't?

it is a what if because it is a hypothetical. which by the way, (and no offense to the OP) will quickly devolve into a-logging. as in "i'm better than chris because i live___" or "chris couldn't handle the culture in __ because he's retarded" (in not so many words)

Making under 20 grand a year in :tugboat:, having no work history of any real value, and living with your mom in a garbage dump at age 30 is doing ok in America?

Alright then. I can't even begin to tell you how much better I feel about myself right now.

I sure hope you aren't in the tourism business because you don't paint a pretty picture.

Jeez. http://www.buzzfeed.com/ariannarebolini ... t-houses-t

Can't imagine that income tax hit though. I wonder what tax year and at what value you'd have to declare the house as income. Presumably when they give you the deed... which is after they've done most of the renovations. I'd be interested in seeing the deed terms too. Like if they're literally quitclaiming to you, or if they're playing some game like giving you life estate or something subject to some insane covenant scheme.

I guess it's not as much of a tax bomb as the student loan forgiveness... but still. No such thing as free. I bet you'd even have to pay taxes on the two years free residence.
