All the people talking about when the USSR ended are decades late to the real reason. Starting in the early 20th century, communism brutally crushed and killed anyone who wasn't a mindless automaton who would follow orders. They killed their best intellectuals. They killed tens of millions of Christians. They killed people who would care about anything other than themselves and the state. This is your brain on Communism. It may be gone politically (mostly), but the crab-bucket mentality, jealousy and the deep hatred of the idea that someone else might succeed where you have not still infects the culture in Slavic countries. It's why capitalism failed so badly there - rather than see it as an opportunity to exercise freedom and mutually trade for the good of all, a gangster class arose who used it as an opportunity to loot the Russian state for personal gain and further impoverish their enemies (i.e. everyone who wasn't them). I genuinely have no idea how to fix it, but Russian (and generally Slavic) culture is deeply rooted in jealousy and avarice.

I watched a video on youtube about a Russian teen who wanted to pursue modelling to support her family. Her family consisted of herself, her Mother and her sister and her father had drank himself to death. Many of the men in her village had died from alcoholism and left their families behind. The village she lived in looked like something out of the 15th century.

A factory director could steal money, bribe authorities and cops, buy foreign currency and diamonds, and escape overseas -- but after that, they couldn't just keep cream skimming like before. It was an inconvenience to the (((international community))), so the USSR had to be destroyed.

In contrast, now you can own a company administrated from the US, registered in Ireland, manufacturing in China, selling to the US government, and live (((elsewhere))). The US doesn't need to be destroyed when it can be slowly bled dry.

These people were backwards savages long before Communism. There’s several things I could point to, and I’m not sure which it is. I think a huge one is having the misfortune to live under hegemonic authoritarian empires (Russia and Ottomans). Another possibility is that there’s something defective about Orthodoxy. Also, they were far from the global trade networks of the West. Problem is that a lot of these factors go hand in hand (Catholic land didnt generally become Russian/Ottoman). Communism made it much worse (after a period of Westernizing), but Slavs have always been European in name only.

There was no deliberate destruction, the entire Soviet system was unworkable and inevitably doomed to failure. It had been deteriorating since the early 1970s but the high oil prices during that decade kept it afloat for a while longer. Once oil prices collapsed in the early 1980s, there was nothing left to sustain the USSR. It was severely behind technologically and incapable of competing with market economies in new industries like electronics or software.

Absolutely nothing could have been done to preserve it, the USSR wasn't in a position to implement Chinese-style economic reforms when it would have been possible and by the time they considered trying it the entire system was already past the point of no return.

The fact is these towns, cities, and countries were okay at one point, so they clearly were capable of building and maintaining them.

When you allow the cancer to grow too much, it's near impossible to excise it.
Junkies and industrial decay is to be expected in large countries.
But a normal country would say "this is fucking bad, and we will not tolerate you people acting like this, and we'll try to fix things", while a degenerate country would just ignore it, and who has the financial means will go live in some secluded cozy neighborhood, away from the rotting zombies in the streets.

I don't know about you, but I've visited Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Sochi, also Kiev, Warsaw and Zagreb.
I've felt way more safe walking around in those cities than shitholes like London,Paris, Rome or Barcelona.

Also most East EU countries are nowhere near the poverty and crime in Africa, and are very civilized, with few high-criminality places.
The shock therapy liberalization of the markets was so horrible because of the former elites and mafia types cannibalizing formerly state-owned businesses. It was done hastily and without any proper controls. States just stopped being communist and it was brutal for years.

The collapse of the USSR lead to a Great Depression level economic catastrophe for the former Soviet and Warsaw Pact nations and the only country that really got it right on how to drag themselves out of it quick was Poland.

Poland is a surprise and it's hard to believe how modern they have become as a country. They barely resemble an East Slavic nation anymore at all. Their GDP will only continue to improve.
