Laughing at these people really is the best way to go but people like Billy of OAG only end up giving their opponents more clout thanks to their own anti-SJW sperging. It's not politics that's the problem, it's the developers forcing an answer on you that's the problem. If you give a player writing involving politics or social values but do not give a definitive answer and instead let the player think about it themselves on their own time, it's apolitical enough for me. Don't pick a side, simply leave a door open for discussion if you respect your player's intelligence. If you have to start off with a side that's written as absolutely right, it's way political.

The way journos tend to talk about politics and values in video games is that somehow the dev's a Nazi for not forcing them on players and the players are idiots for not discussing them instead of continuing on with the actual gameplay.

Shit's just as irksome when some nutters started crying that Hat in Time put a spray of a trannyflag on a wall that most people missed until someone pointed it out. Some people are just desperate to find something political to bitch about to justify themselves as being some sort of voice of reason instead of a shrieking clown.

Devs not giving a definitive answer would be good in most cases (certain games like Wolfenstein not withstanding considering what the main point of their games are) but even then, some devs either show a bit of bias or other cases don't really think out of how to make alternatives work well.


As for Hat in Time, the game may as well done well in pissing off nutters on both side with both some lgbt variant flag and having Jon Tron voice a character in the game despite one being something that could be found like an easter egg and the other being a character one could miss. The most the former does is just show someone on the dev team either supports it but isn't being obnoxiously vocal about it or is simply throwing some bone to lgbt fans. The most the latter does is just let a guy voice a character in a game that may as well remind him of his childhood. The most one can get from these as political statements may as well be REEEEEsetera members and OAG drones being full-on tards that need to chill.

I can respect Billy’s general idea of “anti-SJW journalism” and have even grown to begrudgingly respect @sophnar0747 of NicheGamer, which is basically OAG, but 10000x more competent.

The difference between OAG and Nichegamer is that @sophnar0747 and Orselli, despite their faults are actual journalists who know how to look professional and have even landed spots in E3 and interviews with Japanese game devs, despite Kotaku, Polygon, Gamespot, etc constantly at their throats for being anti-SJW because of their professionalism.

An example of possible "propaganda through mechanics" is Democracy 3 which is rather unbalanced unless you engage in socialism. This of course is not a real economic simulation and purely balanced around the developers own feelings. The developer has been asked if he tried any of the rebalancing mods available, and he said he hasn't, and he doesn't seem interested in re-balancing the game as to avoid one economic policy system being obviously OP.

I don't think the government censoring corporations about violent and sexual content is nearly the same as the government or corporations censoring private citizens. Sure, preventing a multinational corporation from publishing something (within reason) is a problem, but not nearly the same existential issue that allowing corporations to destroy websites and individuals on an ideological basis. That said its not like there's anything we can do about it.
