I'd never even heard of Kiwi Farms when I first saw it trending on Twitter in 2022 during the Keffals stuff. I can remember genuinely wondering if it was a farm for fluffy little birds or fluffy little fruits and what could've happened to make it trend.I've said this before, but look at older threads--especially ones that used to be in the Tumblr subforum. KF was a lot more live-and-let-live about troons even a few years ago.
Some of the change is this a rare safe place to talk freely about transgenderism, and thus drawing people who want to do so. Or people whose previous hangouts were overrun by trans activists. Some of it is the more accepting posters leaving when the anti-trans influx hit. But some of it is previously polite, reasonable transmedical-leaning posters being peaked by the trans actions toward KF specifically.
Funny how much has happened since then. I was lukewarm on trans stuff at the time but overall it barely registered to me. I won't PL but I'll say I'm surprised I can only remember definitely interacting with one pre-T pooner in the few years beforehand. Now it's the single most important political issue for me because it is the most undiluted 1984-style doublethink there is. Instantly disqualifying.
I've posted my peaking process here already, but before actually visiting the Farms for the first time and reading about Keffals and Dylan Mulvaney I was just starting to realise there were too many contradictions within the movement for it to succeed and that even the most hostile TERFs weren't being unreasonable. Laurel Hubbard at the Tokyo Olympics. Saw an increasing number of people putting pronouns in bios and realised that I was just never going to engage in that kind of wankery. Side note, the online discourse on tranny shit has been really lively in the UK since Trump won. I've noticed a few pronouns removed from bios of people I don't even follow. A few Owen Jones orbiters threaten to do an Ana Kasparian-style turn but they're not even well known enough for anyone to call it based, they just get pilloried in a purity spiral. Plenty are choosing to go down with the ship.
There was at least one notable petition between 2019-2022 to make misgendering a crime and I just thought... all the people who are supporting this are the ones who usually want the police to have less power. The reaction to the BBC posting an article in 2021 called "We're being pressured into sex by some trans women" was unhinged, when the content of the article was totally uncontroversial. I think that was around the time when I first heard the phrase "transing away the gay" which I thought was an incredibly strong framing, because you quickly admit that there's enough genuine homophobia in society that it must be the reason for some transitions.
I think I saw Kevin Gibes' profile out there in the wild shortly before finding the Farms. TransSalamander. Trans fucking Salamander.
