You people do realize that the music industry actively tries to make pop songs as annoying as possible so they'll catch people's attention, right? And that identifying them like this only makes their job easier?

There's a difference between annoying and catchy, and something that just makes you angry.
Everyone wants to be El Chombo, but there is only one El Chombo.

Not to them! They either can't tell the difference, or, more likely, either works to get people's attention so they're use either quality at will.

This is a little autistic, but many many years ago, I saw some comedy skit where they talking about something like this, only instead of music I think it was stupid reality TV or something, and how haters would still tune in and there's no difference between hate watching and love watching. Do you know what I'm talking about? Have you ever seen it, and if so, what was it? I've been trying to find it again for awhile now.

But in the case of music, I do think it's different, simply because people don't usually bother to hate-listen to songs they don't like. You might ironically hate-listen to a catchy bad song, sure, and maybe eventually it would become a guilty pleasure? But a genuinely bad song, that isn't catchy and just makes you mad, I think most people simply flat out avoid. For example, I don't like "Bad Guy", but it's also pretty catchy, so I'll sometimes find myself firing up Spotify and hate listening to Billie for awhile. On the flip side, I also hate this song:


and it's NOT catchy at all. It just plain sucks. In fact, it sucks so bad, that the first seven or eight times I heard it, I swore it was some weird nostalgia comeback single by Backstreet Boys or something, and the only thing that tipped me off that it wasn't Backstreet Boys was the fact that even Backstreet Boys rocked harder than this.

If it weren't for the unfortunate fact that "Hole in the World" was played in the workplace, I'd never have listened to it more than once. Bad song + catchy = guilty pleasure. Bad song + not catchy = only time you bring it up is in a thread about horrible music you hate.

This is the same guy who allegedly dissed all “mumble rappers” and their fans in his song “1985”, and is now saying he wants to be a middle child to both the older and younger generations.

That and plus the video doesn’t match, or have anything to do, with the song.

Anything by Ace of Base, because my mother LOVED that band when I was in middle school, it was tolerable the first few times but it all grew very old very quickly and I actually started to cringe whenever their songs came on the radio when my mother was driving. She listened to a station that played the same Ace of Base songs a couple of times every hour. There are worse bands out there, but this one just makes me cringe thinking about it since I can recite their lyrics word for word when I never really wanted to.

I mentioned this over in the Worst Song thread, but I'm gonna talk about it again because I fucking hate this song.


This song, for one reason or another, would play all the goddamn time at my local gym. Firstly, it's way too soft to be playing within a five-mile radius of any gym and I have no idea how anybody is supposed to lift to it. Besides that, it's just so sickeningly sappy. I don't mind love songs, but there's nothing of substance here, just the singer going on about he loves being with someone. The worst thing though is that it's way too catchy for its own good. I hate the tune, but holy shit does it not leave my head if I so much as think of the chorus.

The first time I heard this song was at the casino. At first I thought this was annoying feminist anthem because I could only hear "she's hair is gold, etc." because the sounds of slot machines and other gamblers, so I didn't hear the name Bette Davis. Then I heard on the radio and I thought, my God this is worst than I thought. For all the Bette Davis fans, I'm sorry, I'm not a fan.
