Permanent is permanent, plus property is seen as investments nowadays more than anything, so nobody's going to want to alter the property after it being built due to the initial capital requirements and associated risks. You're more likely to see houses turn into rotting husks post financial crash these days, only to be sold as "decrepit properties" for redevelopment with an 8-10% subsidy from local government bodies.

I was thinking about the holes in the wall and their connection with the octogenarian incest rape recently. While I have no solid answer as to the reasoning behind Chris smashing holes in the walls or how he went about doing it, I can definitely see the act contributing towards Barb's compliance with Chris' deviant advances.
Consider for a moment the position Barb was in. She was a frail old woman with potential dementia symptoms. She is living alone with her 300lb, gender confused lard golem son. For the past few years she has witnessed her son exhibit more and more bizarre and irrational behavior, talking insane gobbledygook about cartoon dimensions, polyamorous marriages with hedgehog mutants and ponies, getting extorted for several thousand dollars because of a moon laser, and claiming crazy shit like he's a goddess and his body is being inhabited by fictional beings. You're feeling confused and terrified because you're stuck in the house alone with your son, you're completely dependent on him for food and care, but he seems like his sanity is slipping and he's acting more and more unpredictable. And then he starts making sexual advances towards you, groping you and trying to coerce you into cooperating. At first you voice your unwillingness and displeasure of his advances, trying your best to fend him off, feeling absolutely sickened at what he's proposing.
One day you see that your son has smashed large holes in the drywall and you've been hearing him screaming and yelling recently. You're now convinced that he could snap and become violent with you, filled with terror that he will hurt or kill you if you upset him. That night he enters your room and resumes his sexual advances despite you telling him "no" the previous times. You think about the holes in the wall and your son's unhinged behavior, you put away your fear and disgust at the back of your mind, and you resign yourself to your son's perverted desires, not daring to voice your displeasure or opposition to what he's doing to you.
I'm almost certain that's the way it happened. I don't believe for one moment that Barb was happily complacent with what was happening. I believe she genuinely feared for her safety and even her life, terrified of what Chris would do if she didn't submit willingly, and so she gave him what he wanted and said what she thought he wanted to hear to keep him from snapping and becoming violent with her. I believe that she felt like she was trapped because she didn't have the strength to fight Chris off, was dependent on Chris to be her caretaker, and feared what might happen to her if she tried to call the police for help, whether Chris overhears the call and attacked her, or how she'd be able to care for herself and the animals with Chris locked away in jail. She likely felt like she was in a no-win situation and had little choice but to acquiesce to Chris' abuse. And when the leaks dropped and the police arrived to investigate, I think Barb felt relieved and provided the authorities with everything they asked for, including making them aware of the details of her abuse.
As much as Barb as always coddled Chris and sheltered him from accountability, I fully believe that all went right out the window the moment Chris started treating her like a blow-up doll. Some people have expressed their belief that even after all that's happened to her that she will still defend Chris and try to get him returned back home with her, and I just can't believe that. I think she finally got to the point where she could no longer defend her son after being sexually abused by him and living in constant, ceaseless terror because of his unpredictable and unhinged behavior.

i personally believe chris in his late stage lunacy did frighten barb and when he made a move on her she wanted to say no maybe try and put her foott down and tell him that this is the last straw but she also knew that she's not as young and intimidating to him as she used to be. Plus if not from her, who knows where or on who he'd vent his sexual repressions on?
TLDR; barb didn't willingly go along with this by any means but rather did so out of fear of her autistic obese ogre of a son going ape shit on her as he did the house, and possibly to prevent chris from taking his repression out on the children down at the playground.

We will never know. Maybe she was senile enough to think it was Bob and went along with it. Maybe she just thought "ah fuck it, why not" considering all unhealthy shit in their relationship initiated by her. I've said that it was just to keep Chris around and make him do whatever she wanted, but who knows. And then when it was revealed she just threw him under the bus.

No matter what the real answer is involving Barb, it's sad to say it will be horribly depressing.
I wonder if the state of the house, holes included, will be brought up as evidence of Chris being a shitty carer prior to the sexual abuse? Surely the police have had a look around and, between slipping on cat shit and crawling over boxes, found some pretty bad stuff.

It can be argued that Barb lived neck deep in shit back when Bob was alive and the authorities just shrugged it off as "their way of living" when it was brought to their attention.

I think to be fair one Chris, he should never of been left in care of Barb. Chris probably needs to live in a group home himself, to have someone who can manage his finances, feed and clothe him.
Did Barb need a carer? She's back in the house, and I doubt there will be a live in carer. Probably someone doing house visits is sufficing if she has anyone in there.
There should have been an intervention from the state earlier for the two of them. This may have been difficult though, as ever since Chris was a child Bob and Barb were unwilling to engage honestly with the state because they thought Chris would be sent off to a funny farm. However, this was probably due to an old fashioned understanding of how mental health is dealt with these days - Chris would likely have been mainstreamed.
