The late 80s and early 90s -- a time when the oldest Millennials weren't yet in high school -- was a time when furry characters were prominent in American media. Sonic the Hedgehog was the "way past cool" answer to Mario by SEGA. There was also that furry Robin Hood cartoon by Di$ney someone already mentioned. And I wonder how many impressionable youth were seduced down the dark path by that Ninjara character in the Ninja Turtles comics...
Maybe that's why it seems furries are always Millennials?
Cartoons have definitely gotten more sexual since the 80s; in the sense that the female characters are modeled to appear more feminine. Whether that be Minerva Mink, Lola Bunny, or the bat lady from Sonic. Every 90s kid had a thing for Lola Bunny in Space Jam. The outcasts and the kids on the spectrum just took it to furrydom, while everyone else forgot about it and daydreamed about human characters like The Baroness.
I think that, coupled with various spectrums, gets us most furries. When I was in high school, I recall two furries during my entire time I was there. I sat with them in the library one morning before classes began, before I knew they were furries. They always had D&D books, and holy fuck, that looked cool to me. They seemed kinda autistic, but who fucking cares if they're nice guys?
Until one of them showed off his drawing book filled with big-tittied fox furries. I had made a critical error in judgment.
