Why do you rate things the way that you do?

Newer kiwi wondering what your methodology or philosophy on giving out certain ratings is.

For instance:
I don't like giving out negative ratings because I believe psychologically negative ratings can heavily sway you to ignore the post if it is on topic. However, if its truely retarded or unrelated, I am more than willing to toss out a negative rating.

Edit: Thank you all for diversifying my internet point portfolio.

I give as good as I can take.

Every rating I give devalues ratings as a whole, and since they're free, they can be given without any major consequences. My goal is to sweep the market once it bottoms out and sell them back at a premium.
My recollection with various forums over the years is that any feedback at all, especially positive feedback but not exclusively, increases activity over the entire network. Apathy is the single most crushing response to best efforts, or even shitty efforts. To a poster, they know their content was read and enjoyed (or hated) and are more likely to continue being active as a result. To a passerby, they see a vibrant community with a healthy amount of posters and lurkers and will consider lurking or posting as a result.

I rarely touch the negative ratings. For a particularly stupid or hostile post I just use "Informative", "Feels", or "Thoughtful" ironically :/
I do similar to this. I rarely give neg rates, unless the post is particularly egregious. Normally if I don’t like a post, I just don’t rate it at all. With people I like, or “know”, I will ironically rate them for kicks with Informative, Thoughtful, and Powerlevel. I give out Islamic Content like it is a positive rating for things I find hilariously disturbing. I need to get True and Honest so I can rate Horrifying, Drink, and Deviant though.

For me I try to keep things light hearted and positive so I try not to neg rate unless shit is just bad, like really bad. I also try to look at things from the poster's view and weigh on the variables in a discussion. Which is why I'll sometimes agree with differing viewpoints, because both sides have made a good argument for why they think they way the do and I can see why they'd think that way. And I love me some hilarious shitposts.
