Why Super Mario Galaxy is the ultimate Mario game – an exercise in adding a semblance of realism to a very unrealistic media franchise

I appreciate nintendo saying fucking it just making the game hyper linear and polishing it to a mirror sheen. I still perfer 64 and sunshine but it's easy to see the cons of open level design in those games.
Galaxy is still some of the best presentations in a mario game and honestly feels like the last time the series was truly innovative. Everything just started feeling homogeneous afterwords and while stuff like odyssey and wonder have steered in the right direction they feel more like arbitrary artstyle switches over the smooth continuation that was galaxy. I'll always miss that few year period where mario galaxy was the official mario artstyle, I remember buying mario galaxy trading cards because how much I loved it.
Anyway all this is kinda moot since we all know the best 3d mario game is sonic adventure

It seems like the video game forum is bringing in more autists that aren't even here for the cows as much as to discuss games, which is interesting. At least it's very positive autism instead of coping and seething over something.

Op, elaborate more. Your writing feels like a rough draft.
Inasmuch as we, in a tongue in cheek manner, denigrate the farms for being a glorified "Mean Girls"-esque harpy den, the average user is substantially more likely to engage in good faith dialogue than every other site (for any topic)—likely as a result of having its controversy act as a filter for normalfags and having pseudonymity as a compromise between ego protection and candor. Also there's no bots shitting up discussion.

Anyways my favorite Mario platformer is Sunshine, if only because of nostalgia and nailing the tropical ambience. (Favorite overall mario game would be Mario TTYD).

Paper Mario: Sticker Star is the Ultimate Mario Game
'preciate the effort post but that game was ass.

Everyone knows the best Mario game is the NES Mario's Missing. It's so good it's the only game that gave me a seizure after playing it.

I disagree. It’s a very good game, but I think Mario Party 3 is better.

It's literally unplayable, at least on Switch Lite. Maybe if I played the original or on a regular Switch it'd be better, but I'm judging it as-is. No way it's better than Sunshine or SMB3 anyway.

And Puzzle Plank is one of the best just for the music:

Beat me to it.
How is Galaxy supposed to be more realistic than Sunshine? That game is all just resort island tourist attractions while Mario Galaxy has you running around on tiny planets in space.
Sunshine definitely has the best aesthetics of the mario platformers. And is realistic by showing other levels on the island, like being able to see the airstrip, Rico harbor, and Pinna park from Delfino plaza. They even give the levels descriptions on the map as though you were reading blurbs in a tourism pamphlet. Sunshine's "commitment to the conceit" was admirable for the time.

I cannot believe you spergs didn't mention THE best Mario game 3 pages into this thread:

Now hijacking this thread to showcase the greatest Wii game ever:

THIS THREAD IS NOW A SKYWARD SWORD APPRECIATION THREAD

No, I will not elaborate. This masterpiece speaks for itself.

Dr. Mario 64 pulled an F-Zero GX by being so peak that Nintendo refused to make another retail entry. Honorable mention goes to Tetris & Dr. Mario with its Mixed Match mode aka Puyo Puyo Tetris before Puyo Puyo Tetris.

Being honest, I rank Galaxy on the lower end of 3D Mario. The games aren't bad, but I don't find them nearly as good as the open collect-a-thons nor even 3D World. It is in this weird area where it wants to be both 64 and 3D World, but I never feel like it gets the strengths of either. 3D World is great for the fast paced levels that keep up new ideas that meld with the base gameplay while keeping some level of challenge, by comparison, Galaxy is much slower paced and more gimmick heavy. Galaxy also has more open areas like 64, but they aren't really open and are more like a small hub for a singular challenge.

The movement in Galaxy has been stripped down to be worse from 64 and Sunshine, and while technically 3D World is more restrictive, given the type of game it is, it feels better than Galaxy. As stated above, the game is like a hybrid of the styles, but in being so, it doesn't have the movement freedom of 64, nor that great feeling snappiness of 3D World.

Of the two games, Galaxy 1 is the better game if for nothing more than the atmosphere. The isolated space feel is damn near perfected and the music and visuals are beautiful at portraying a far somber tone when compared to any Mario title. Said atmosphere even more elegantly highlighted by the surprise inclusion of Rosalina's relatively sad backstory. Galaxy 2 is alright but has that early 2010s New Super Mario Bros philosophy of being homogenized with the rest of the series. You can feel the personality getting sucked out.

If I had to personally rank the 3D Mario games and let out my shit tastes:
  1. Super Mario 64 DS
  2. Super Mario Odyssey
  3. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
  4. Super Mario Sunshine
  5. Super Mario 64
  6. Super Mario Galaxy
  7. Super Mario Galaxy 2
  8. Super Mario 3D Land

  4. Super Mario Sunshine
  5. Super Mario 64
  6. Super Mario Galaxy
  7. Super Mario Galaxy 2
  8. Super Mario 3D Land
Understandable list, though likely not a popular order. Mine's unorthodox too. On yours I'd say 64 DS' controls are too much of a detriment to be so high imo but I can see why it's beloved. Odyssey's placement makes sense. Sunshine should at least be top 3. I'd also say Land should be above the Galaxy games.

Here's mine:

1. Sunshine
2. Odyssey
3. 64
4. Land
5. 64 DS
6. Galaxy

I haven't played 3D World but I'd certainly place it higher than Galaxy if I did.

The top 4 are a bit interchangeable, and if it wasn’t for 3D World and especially its addition of Bowser’s Fury, Sunshine would easily be a top contender. Would highly recommend trying out 3D World, it has that early 2010s generic Mario feel that holds it back, but gameplay and level design is really good.

I'd also say Land should be above the Galaxy games.
Land is just so forgettable and generic, with nearly everything about it being outdone by World. At the very least the Galaxy games have some uniqueness to them which is why I would place them higher.

Yeah it's a real shame they had to release a gutted version of the game.
