Yeah, they don't show anybody singing.

That's because musicals are notorious for flopping hard when they put them in movie theatres, so they're trying to trick you into thinking you'll be going to see a movie, and not a musical.

They don't all flop - see Wonka for the latest example - but they also don't ever seem to put them singing in the trailer - again, see Wonka, but also even more recently the new Mean Girls. Honestly, I can't think of the last trailer for a musical I saw that had any singing in it. Song from the film behind non-singing action isn't uncommon, eg animated musicals, but actual singing is very rare.

Game of Thrones alum Peter Dinklage was unveiled today as the voice of Dr. Dillamond in Universal‘s upcoming two-part musical Wicked.

Peter Dinklage joins Ariana Grande as Glinda; Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba; Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University’s regal headmistress Madame Morrible; Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, a roguish and carefree prince; Ethan Slater as Boq, an altruistic Munchkin student; Marissa Bode in her feature debut as Nessarose, Elphaba’s favored sister; and Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz.

I'm not sure if He, or Goldblum can sing.

The book is extremely dated and the writing is pretentious, workshop-level bad. I tried reading it after 10 years and couldn’t believe how fucking garbage it was. Also it was far grosser than I remember it being and includes shit like zoophilia.

Anyways, the trailer looks horrible. Elphaba looks like an ogre in a a witch costume and Glenda looks like a street tweaker. Ugly, terrible casting. I couldn’t look at these characters for a minute straight without getting disgusted.

The problem with Dinklage is that he's a terrible actor. He'd be a tolerable character actor, fine for bit parts or cameos, but anything more than that, he just sucks.

I get it, it's super brave and awesome to cast a midget in a movie with munchkins, but, get this, NOT as a munchkin! Omg!

I mean I was never going to watch this nigger trash anyway, but yeesh.

a lot of people can manage with studio magic, not even modern autotune, look at older stuff like Guys And Dolls
Marlon Brando is not known for his singing, but they were able to cobble together enough takes to make him sound good enough for the movie

obviously "trying" and "giving a fuck" are lost arts, but at least IN THEORY you can probably mangle a decent performance out of some of the most atonal clods

OT to the film, but I saw Wicked years ago in Edinburgh with my mother. It begins. They have the opening number. Everyone claps and cheers at the (admittedly good) song. Then not a minute later another song begins and right behind me some middle aged Scottish bloke shouts "for fuck's sake," in painful realisation that musicals feature multiple songs.

That's all I can remember of it.

Hearing that the book Wicked was some fetishistic adult fanfiction is both surprising and unsurprising. I wonder how many fans of the musical would change their tune if they knew that.

They obviously wrote way worse smutty fics, they'd be okay with it except for the fact Elphaba is straight.
