*Human bodies should be perfectly symmetrical and masturbation physically deforms you. He'd prove this by demanding people send him photographs of them, then he'd draw lines on their bodies to show where they weren't symmetrical.

Anyway, WrongPlanet wasn't receptive and he ended up banned. AFAIK after that he quit registering on other people's forums and started keeping to himself and his own websites.

ten years ago that place was run by a 35 year old woman and her 17 year old boyfriend who had ran away from home to be with her, complete with enemy website, explaining the situation, run by his parents (and some psycho guy who did death threats/stalking on anyone from any autism forum who disagreed with him - parents seemed to think he was a genuine ally that had also been wronged by the couple)

Same here. Around 5 or 6 and I've pretty much adjusted to society no problem. It's those who are diagnosed older that you feel sympathy for. No one to guide them through life clearly, and having parents who either despised you or are confused by you to the point of alienation.

That or something more severe and dangerous.

When I was 14, 15 I used WP. Honestly it made me feel like shit and that there was no way I could mix in. The truth is most people with autism can mix into society normally, just a "bit" different. Like delboy thankfully I knew I had aspergers before I was 10 so I never really needed to use it anyways.
Also as usual the owner of the site has their own public drama going on.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm glad someone made it. I never joined but read the posts there frequently. It was one of those situations where I might find a legit good topic and want to register so I could post a response to it, but then I'd see some of the other posts and think "Maybe I really don't want to get involved with these people". I suppose I made the right choice.

I don't doubt that many of these people do in fact have difficulties related to their autism, but it seems like many of them have been so coddled or sheltered by their families from anything that wasn't #autismpositivity that any type of mild critique is seen as ableism. As terrible as this sounds, I'm sometimes a little skeptical of some of the members' (not necessarily just the younger ones) claims about how their parents treated them growing up. Some of it seems so cliche that I have to wonder if it was a matter of their parents trying to get them to not obsess so much over their interest du jour and push them toward independence, which they perceived as "You hate me because of my 'tism!". One member in particular comes to mind as completely exaggerating about how evil their parents were to them; they're 43 now. They had a short-lived blog. I don't know if I should post their name.

I wish I could find a thread on there where the OP gloated about being on disability and said he/she was more than happy to take taxpayer money so he could sit on his ass. It was like Steven Assanti with less profanity. Luckily, many of the other member actually called them out for it.

So many people have called out Wrong Planet for how they treat autistic people who aren't softies.

:powerlevel: I had a more luck discussing autism related issues on Aspies For Freedom when that was still active. Wonder what happened to that site? Is it still up?

Eh, depending on the level of functioning it’s better to keep people like this out of the workplace anyway - the ones who don’t give a shit about trying to fit in or contribute just constantly slack off, fuck up their work and run their mouth all the time. If people don’t have the desire or ability to control whatever mental issues they have then we might as well give them autismbux to stay at home, not for their sake but to save people who do have their shit together from having to become tard handlers in the workplace.

The majority of disabled people are hired to fill a quota anyway. Workplaces have to be seen as diverse, apparently.

I have a friend who's high functioning, and he joined WP so he can use his personal experience to help people and give them advise and all that sort of thing. They just called him a troll and told him things like "I don't have to do anything or take personal responsibility for my actions, I'm autistic!!!" so he got frustrated and left.

There is a seriously good market for someone to start an autist site/forum that is centred around providing clear and candid advice towards self-aware and high-functioning people with the condition. It seems that the spectrum (forgive the pun) of autist forums cluster around a) hugboxes for the self-pitying and low-functioning members of the high-functioning crowd, or b) resource sites for carers and siblings.

I think a forum that collates the thousands of good resources available for autists and allows for discussion about how to handle their condition could be a goldmine. A lot of the sorted-out autists I know seem to be frustrated that there's no website that they can go to where they can speak to others like adults and ask serious questions about the areas they're deficient in.

That...actually sucks. They seem to have that sort of mentality on there.
