There's nothing wrong with making the Xbox more friendly to a larger consumer base. In fact that was a very good idea, the problem is abandoning what you already have to chase something else. The kinect wasn't a one off thing they pushed it for a long time and all it did was let the PS3 outsell the Xbox in the later half of the generation.Call me a fanboy, but I never understood the complaint of the Xbox 360 catering to a general audience (at least up until they followed the motion control craze after the Wii.)
Brands need an identity that speaks to their core audience. Nintendo makes the Mario machine, they have made the Mario machine for 40 years and when you buy a Nintendo you know you're getting a Mario machine. Modern Nintendo caters to different types of games more than the past but at its core you're still getting the Mario machine and it's advertised as such.
Xbox found a brand catering to young men who wanted to play online with friends on primarily violent games. They carried this into the 360 generation where they capitalized on a ton of bonuses that Playstation did not meet. Xbox arcade, a dead simple system, killer apps like Halo, being a strong social hub for people to meet and play games. Now take this success and burn every bridge possible by wasting the later half with the kinect and then launching the Xbone with draconian drm that killed any chance of it being a success. Xbox told their core audience they wanted someone else and has been cratering ever since.
