Giving her a $500,000 advance on a memoir that hasn't been spoken of since its inception was probably a bad idea. It'll be a golden shitshow if and when and if it finally happens though.

Shit, when two sites collide! I remember XOJane from years back, when some of their content was actually halfway readable and the comments sections weren't total shitshows. There was a point circa 2013-2014 when the site was becoming increasingly asinine, in combination with one fuckup after another (Yogagate, mentioned earlier, was one of them), poor editing, staff being shitty with the commenters, admin problems like not paying writers, and a general lack of professionalism. Everything boiled over at once when one particular scandal happened, and most of the regular commentariat left the site in a mass exodus. They set up their own forum and wanted to create their own website with blackjack! And hookers! but I don't know what happened to that. It was some seriously grade A internet drama.

From what I can tell, the new audience of trolls and Tumblrista-types took over for good as soon as the normal, well-adjusted commenters left in their collective flounce, and that was pretty much the final nail in the coffin for XOJane. Now it's a low-rent Jezebel.

I think Knox was using the money she made from porn to fund herself through college, so I guess she subverted patriarchy's expectations by using porn as a means to an end to become an educated woman? Otherwise...

The staff were that incompetent, and it was the final straw that prompted a good chunk of readers to leave. Those same readers started a crowdfunding campaign for the victim in response and raised thousands of dollars to help her, but it was incredible in the first place that apparent professionals published a survivor's real name and photo and thought, "Yeah, this couldn't backfire." XOJane was/is incontrovertible proof that any idiot can have a career in media now.

To be fair, he said, "he's freaked out by her race" -- I think that would piss me off if I were in her shoes. I don't think it puts him on the level of rapist, but yeah, that's kinda fucked up to say that to someone. Especially if you're having sex with them. The rest of her description of him makes the dude sound like an all around douchebag -- I think that comment was probably the least offensive thing he said. (Later telling her how grossed out he was by her boobs?)
