I like this thread! I'm getting burnt out on the usual trash lolcow: socially inept, low-performing, often falling-upwards messes of self-destructive and narcissistic individuals and finding myself more fascinated by the lolcow-adjacent, especially if they're grifters. Lolcows are a samey kind of terrible, but people like Yeonmi are a complete experience. I agree that she isn't entirely a lolcow as of yet; she's actually putting the work in to maintain all of this instead of carrying on with an entitled "pay me because I exists" drive. She also seems to keep most of her post-NK life private.

I wish there was a better term for people like her, because some grifters, as individuals, are too boring to ever have a thread here.

She's been through a lot, but it's clear she's feeding some convoluted shit to anyone who wants to hear it. Her stuff is a wild mashup of DPRK insanity that serves to boost the image of ROK and USA. They're believable because some are based on facts, but she takes from other experiences and fictionalized accounts, then cobbles them together into a backstory where her mom dies 90 times while being raped 500, at least. I'm sure she is paid by ROK because they have an agenda to maintain.

I remember her repeatedly saying, in the beginning, that her family was rich for NK standards. I actually remember her debut when she was dressed in regalia and spoke about it in her early 20s. But, as time went on, her accounts were cartoonish compared to other survivor stories, which is easy to digest for people in the ROK and USA that love eating sensationalism. She indulges in the fame and feeds people what they want to believe.

Here's the other thing: There's actually an entire industry in ROK that's based on an old, pre-split phrase "Marry girls from the north, and boys from the south." That set the foundation for Yeonmi's fame. There's a fascination with North Korean women being damsels in distress reduced to being naïve waifus for South Korean men, which is funny when you consider the shit they've been through to get out. There's a dating show based on the idea, and Squid Game even touches on it as the scene w/the defector and the gangster apparently takes place in a host club specializing in NK women. Yeonmi's the most prominent character out of this trend we've seen in a Western Audience. Most defector women don't want anything to do with this shit, but Yeonmi takes full advantage of it.

Let's play devils advocate for a moment:

Maybe she isn't making it up, what we know about north korean detention camps is through second hand accounts; we know nothing exactly because its insanely hard to enter north korea and even if any of us kiwis manages to go what they will show you what they want you to see and not the truth. So we can't possibly verify either or, the fact that people are risking their lives and fucking around with the possibility of china or some other 3rd world asian country just to leave north korea and go south, is inherently telling how bad conditions can be.

Shit I had a friend who worked in the airforce that was stationed in south korea and who literally saw a person try to defect from north korea via the dematerialized zone which mind you is full of fucking not yet denonated land minds, if you manage to escape the bullets from the guards on the other side, than you run risk of blowing yourself to high heavens. No one who isn't truly desperate to leave a situation like that would risk such things to escaped. Then again this guy was military and the accounts of the military on the n korea side are just deplorable. to a point where death by starvation is a possibility.

Yeomis age places her child hood around the famine time too, so its very possible a good fraction of the shit she's talking about could've actually happened. I'm not dismissing that its possible that she's hamming stuff up for the money, but the age and time frame where she would've been still in north korea makes me believe about 75 percent of what she says with 25 percent being for south korea propaganda bucks.

She's not the only person grifting the fact that they came from a 3rd world dictatorship; like literally all the fucking human rights people grift for bucks on their paycheck while paying a pittance for those affected buy such sad conditions.At least she's grifting for herself and not making it about like help the poor jews in ukraine or send a kid in africa one box of shit to a rice bowl Christian organization while the ceo sits there and keeps all the money.

I agree with OP, this takes Chris levels of delusion to believe. She's obviously just a grifter making up stories to sell to dumb Americans because she knows that most people would be unable to verify her claims. If I escaped from a shithole and wanted whitey to pay for my plastic surgery, this would be the easiest way to do it.

I think the people she associates with are making her more cow-like. Before she got too involved with the conservative sphere she was a lot less dramatic. Sure she had her lulzy moments but nowhere near as bad.

I found her interesting in the past and I have no doubt she went through some shit cause North Korea is crazy as balls. I also would believe the conga line from leaving there and making it to the US and all the individuals and parties involved are a crazy story as well. However I feel like some of her stories are fluffed and people simply parade her around for being a strong survivor. Most North Koreans who leave end up in the South where they can receive benefits and assistance while also being "reeducated" for life in the South. Its one thing to have culture shock when you move to another country, its another when you are from North Korea and have to denounce your previous life and learn everything all over again. Loss of family and difficulties adjusting to modern life really affect some of the defectors and a small fraction do unfortunately go back. Most of them look fairly average and try to live normal lives, however this woman decided to go to the US got married (woof) to obtain citizenship and get a full plastic makeover. It makes me assume there are parties making a push for all of this to parade her around to slam on NK. Of course NK fully deserves its due diligence for the crimes it commits it just looks tacky to parade a woman who has been given plastic surgery, money and clothes to show off her body talk about her story.

I don't doubt that Kim has a harem, but detoothed? Seriously? You have to be pretty gullible to believe that wholesale, many dictators across history have had harems, why does Kim's have to be detoothed? There is a grain of truth but her account is heavily embellished. Same with the other clickbait titles included in OP, shoot a guy 90 times in front of every artist? Running out of virgins for his harem? They sound plain ludicrous, and one has to question how she has access to such information now that she's in America.

Also, I don't disagree that North Korea tries to instill love for the state over the family, but it is a huge stretch to go from this to "they have no concept of romantic love". Many North Korean officials, including Kim himself are married. Why don't they just have a communal breeding fuckhouse if they don't know what love is? Even if the specific word for love was outlawed for some braindead reason, people would simply use euphemisms to convey their basic human feelings. After all, isn't it the case that every communist country has failed to deconstruct the nuclear family? Again, grain of truth with plenty of embellishment.

Obviously I have no love for rocket man, but it's hard to take her seriously when other defectors and even her own mother have pointed out multiple inaccuracies with her story. Hell, she even did the classic marry an ugly American and divorce him after you get a green card grift. There are many more credible defectors with their own harrowing stories, I don't see why we have to take Yeonmi Park seriously and pay for her next tit job, this isn't #believeallwomen. If anything, every debunked lie that she tells just obfuscates the truth further and makes it harder for other defectors to be believed.

Grifters from third world shitholes blatantly lying to get asylum in the US and sympathy money is not uncommon, Jumana Hanna bullshitted her way from Iraq to California before anybody thought it was important to verify her story.
