Yeonmi Park - North Korean Grifter

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Here's the other thing: There's actually an entire industry in ROK that's based on an old, pre-split phrase "Marry girls from the north, and boys from the south." That set the foundation for Yeonmi's fame. There's a fascination with North Korean women being damsels in distress reduced to being naïve waifus for South Korean men, which is funny when you consider the shit they've been through to get out.

I think your translation is a bit incorrect. The phrase in English is "Women from the North are beautiful, & men from the South are handsome." It means that the perfect Korean couple is a North Korean woman with a South Korean Man.

Wish Miss Park would have that kind of attitude lol
Seems to me she just takes any info she gets about NK, takes it for granted most of the time and just dishes out content for the sake of dishing out content.
That's why the inconsistencies.
but problem is how the fuck and I to verify she's talking bullshit?
get a ticket to north korea travel and see for myself? oh wait that means I'd only see pyongyang....not like fucking kaesong where she said she was at before pyongyang. Even if I ever go outside of pyongyang it would be only the good bits and not the shittiness.
ask a north korean whose still there? if I am allowed and theres a good chance they're hand picked by party.
Theres also a good chance even if go to north korea I might end up as another warmbrier because I am that socially inept and come back brain dead and unable to say anything.

north korea is heavily scripted when it comes outsiders one of my friends who was in the airforce saw an nker risk eating multiple bullets and getting blown up just to leave that shit hole of a country by literally making a run for it it in the demiliarilized zone all I know is if someone is really willing to be shot at and blown up just to leave then shit must be pretty fucking bad.

It's a good market for story telling when nobody can really confirm or deny anyone's claims lol

She's not the only person grifting the fact that they came from a 3rd world dictatorship; like literally all the fucking human rights people grift for bucks on their paycheck while paying a pittance for those affected buy such sad conditions. At least she's grifting for herself and not making it about like help the poor jews in ukraine or send a kid in africa one box of shit to a rice bowl Christian organization while the ceo sits there and keeps all the money.
Personally, I've never really been a fan of that mindset, it reminds me of the end of the Life of Pi movie where the insurance agent just decides to accept the fantastic tale he's been fed instead of the more mundane and depressing truth, at the end of the day, telling people what they want to hear just leaves them even more poorly informed than usual.
I respect her in this sense. We talk about people who grift by means of charity, but rarely ever talk about the people who get pissy when they see someone who's survived a lot not come out with a perpetual victim complex. Their ego relies on it. They never donate unconditionally; they donate to have a story to brag about to their friends while avoiding being a total liar. At least the ones who give for a tax break know how to shut up and move on. That's why they expect a blown out, sensationalized story of overcoming the odds, but still want this person to keep tugging at their heartstrings. It makes them feel as if they're 'making a difference' with little to no effort. A mundane tale, even with horrifying truths, reminds them too much of a reality they'll probably never experience and certainly don't want to be a part of in anyway. They don't want to buy that. It's a cycle, and I can't blame a survivor for making something out of their hardship. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn't always hurt others given how shitty and overly conditional "established" avenues of help can often be.

I think the people she associates with are making her more cow-like. Before she got too involved with the conservative sphere she was a lot less dramatic. Sure she had her lulzy moments but nowhere near as bad.

She's said some pretty based shit, but also has acted like a tard. I wonder if her attention seeking and need for validation is due to what she's been through. You can tell she isn't necessarily lying about having trauma, but there's just something off.

I really think she'd be better if she wasn't becoming a drone for the right.
That's what I noticed when I saw that she had a youtube channel, and watched more of her videos. It's not just the right itself she's pandering to; she's literally selling a fantasy to right wing yellow fever dudes and the South Korean men out to unify with their idyllic, Northern damsel. It's hilarious, but I am worried about her going overboard because we've seen before where these dudes explode if their parasocial fantasy is ruined. She can probably handle it.

Also, I don't disagree that North Korea tries to instill love for the state over the family, but it is a huge stretch to go from this to "they have no concept of romantic love". Many North Korean officials, including Kim himself are married. Why don't they just have a communal breeding fuckhouse if they don't know what love is? Even if the specific word for love was outlawed for some braindead reason, people would simply use euphemisms to convey their basic human feelings. After all, isn't it the case that every communist country has failed to deconstruct the nuclear family? Again, grain of truth with plenty of embellishment.
That confused me when she said that, because romance movies are very popular there, and that's part of the appeal of why Kim Jong Un is being seen in public with his wife: to present a happy, young, powerful couple united together for the Motherland or whatever.

I think your translation is a bit incorrect. The phrase in English is "Women from the North are beautiful, & men from the South are handsome." It means that the perfect Korean couple is a North Korean woman with a South Korean Man.
Thanks. I couldn't remember it 100%. Either way, it's a big, profitable fantasy.

Needless to say, the norks are a bit salty about her

there are a lot more videoes about her on the channel

oh and check out the comments for some 4D chess.
OT, but holy shit, they have a playlist for Korean Friend's Association founder Alejandro Cao de Benós. Now, this man? HE is a massive lolcow and the very definition of a Useful Idiot. Looks like there used to a thread for him, but, given how flippant and online he is, it's a good that it got snipped. I won't derail the thread with him too much, but he's famous for tearing up an American journalist's room in one of the first televised NK tours. The incident was so bad, the North Korean guides had to apologize on his behalf to save face. I still remember what she said to the journalist looking over his busted laptop: "We don't do this."
Probably the only Lolcow with too much access to actual threats that could come to fruition to make a thread about.

Speaking of charities I got this song stuck in my head:

IN THE ARMS OF AN ANGEL FLYYY AWWAY FROM HERE
IN THE ARMS OF AN ANgel FLY AWAY....FLY AWAY.....
FROM HERRRRRRREEEE
:gunt::gunt::gunt::gunt::gunt::gunt:

but seriously though I don't see yeomi as a lol cow maybe a person of an interest but not a full blown lolcow.
she's no different from the garden variety grifter the only thing difference is that s. korea pays her for outrageous stories about north korea. She does have some lolcow tendencies but its not really enough to say she's a lolcow and she is atleast advocating for the freedom of her people, while collecting money for plastic surgery,

Truthfully I don't doubt she's seen some shit, trauma can impact people differently and while I go on here to laugh I don't really see anything funny about yeomi park, sad is what I feel, that she had to be reduced to this to make a living after having no child hood during the arduous march in best korea. She acts very childlike when she goes off about north korea, if I remember age regression is a sign of trauma, like she has a childish tone of voice, and I feel like were hitting some point of truth in her exagerated stories. I am a bit of sperg and pay attention to tone of voice to get the idea of how the person is feeling than visual cues. idk

you can rate me autistic but I think she's a person of interest versus a full blown lolcow.

I have no proof to back this up, but I have to wonder if some of this nonsense is just due to translations coming across weird.

Like "there is no word for love in North Korea". Ok, yeah, the idea that the word love being outlawed in NK is something that's obviously false. Perhaps she (or her speech writer?) meant that the term love has lost all meaning in NK? See, that I could believe given how often people are required to espouse their devotion to the state and its leadership over there. Telling someone in your personal life "I love you" might just feel dead and empty after doing that shit day in and day out.

If anyone here speaks gook you can let me know how realistic this idea is. I only posit this because I have to admit I wouldn't expect a peasant who grew up uneducated and spent most of her life being abused to be terribly good with her words or capable of describing shit eloquently.

yeah I think the language barrier is a contributing factor too, she had to go from north korean dialect to south korean dialect to english there has to be something lost in translation at some point.

I think what she meant don't shoot the messenger here, I think she meant north korea had no concept of romantic love.
shit even outside the concertation camps as far as I can tell for media's sake that it wasn't until the second kim that even allowed romantic love to be shown on in movies.

Even then that kind of love was used as tool to spread a message, like for example in this one movie called a broad bell flower, I watched it was about a north Korean woman who lived in a remote village and a guy who wanted to fuck off from said village for better opportunities, and take the woman away with him, it ends with the woman overworking herself to death to improve the village and the guy regretting his smart move to greener pastures. the message of the movie was fuck your own personal ambitions to lead a better life if your in a shitty village over work yourself to death and improve it and discard all your personal fee fees because its more important to be a good commie and give your life's blood to the state.

Basically the woman is used as a propaganda tool the man is not a dumbass and realizes living in a shitty situation is bad, but then swallows the propaganda and decides to overwork with the woman to death, or woman dies leaving the man in grief.

Another movie can't remember the name but its about a former singer turned housewife moving to a new soviet style apartment block, and they're recently married but her husband works at metal production plant, and works overtime to create steel. the woman is upset because of him working overtime she feels neglected emotionally, but the husband still works overtime leaving her alone. She decides to attempt a divorce, man kind of feels sad, she gets shamed because how dare she want to spend time with her husband when the state needs steel; she represses her emotions he creates a special kind of steel the end.

moral of the story: FUCK YOUR FEELZ IF YOUR HUSBAND NEEDS WORK OVER TIME FOR THE STATE THEN SUCK IT UP BUTTER CUP AND BE A GOOD COMMIE.

I can go on but I have only seen 1 nk movie where there wasn't no over propaganda shoved into a love story and that the movie based on a folk tale called chungyang, which I found better than the south korean counter part because the south korean one was to sexual for me. basically its an old ass korean tale about a giasang which is kind of like a geisha but you can fuck and is a slave to the state, falling in love with a member of the yangbang (koreas upper crust during the joseon dynasty) they get married in secret the man has to leave to take the state exams to become an official of the yangbang class. He's gone for years she waits for him, as she is waiting for him a new governor comes to administer the province he does an inspection of the all the registered giasangs in the province wants to fuck the married giasang she refuses, gets imprisoned and waits to be executed all the whil saying no to governer. it ends happily when her husband becomes the governer and tests her one last to determine if she still has her virtue. they live happily ever after.

If anyone here speaks gook you can let me know how realistic this idea is. I only posit this because I have to admit I wouldn't expect a peasant who grew up uneducated and spent most of her life being abused to be terribly good with her words or capable of describing shit eloquently.
I don't speak gook but I understand a bit of korean society mostly south but not north as I only have access to whats available on the net.

Shes going for a hyperbole with the love stuff. She more or less means there is no glamorized concept of love or relationships shown there. Cant be fucking each other when you can use that energy to sustain the workforce. Sure you have love for your family and shit but the state matters most so if you see someone fucking up youre gonna report it. However its more or less successful because people there inherently have a love for family and loved ones and will bit the bullet (literally) in some cases.

Sex education is pretty much on existent (South K aint so good on it either) so people are just having tons of unexpected pregnancies (several end in miscarriages) and other messes as a result. In general most East Asian societies have a lack of direct focus on love as Western societies do so it looks weird from that scope. Loving people and forming deep relationships is a human nature and to claim another country is oblivious to it is insane. Its why I believe some people prop her up to say shit like this so people in the West can make their own conclusions of how terrible NK is. Its also hypocritical for her to make that claim while saying her parents did her damnest to ensure she had a good life or a surviving chance.

in hindsight maybe saying nk has not concept of romantic love is too much, more like any normal romantic love and healthy relationships is frowned upon instead you need to put up with disappointment and sadness from neglect from your partner for the good of the state. Like alot of whats available on youtube almost always exclusively shows normal feelings in everyday situations as selfish. watching this its easier to assume that what we deem romantic love is frowned up.

It's established too that nk has a social structure based on what your family did during wwII and the Japanese colonization prior, so any match making is based on class first, then occupation, then a woman's capacity to care for the home and make money if your in the middle or bottom of the totem pole. it is confirmed by other sources while men must work, they don't get paid alot and during the famine the shift of bread winner has been put on the woman. this has lead to the consequence of increasing domestic violence instances as men are pretty much reduced to being just another mouth to feed in the family. its kind of ironic seeing as women started off on equal foorting but slowly had their shit reduced over time then now in a position of power, all commie countries try and deconstruct the nuclear family in one way or another and nks juche style of communism is no exception. Yet despite that they still adhere to pre commie sense of state first love second that Confucianism sort of advocated.

yeah I can agree with this.

You can just listen to Voice of Korea, which is their radio channel they blast all over the earth. Well, assuming you have a shortwave receiver.

It's pretty fun because it's not propaganda like "glorious state has no problems" but rather "glorious leader fixing our problems." So if you read between the lines you get to know what's going on in NK. Right now it's the mysterious disease sweeping the country.

I wouldn't trust this bitch or any western-aligned source at all honestly. Yeah NK is an incredibly fucking shitty place to live so there's no reason to actually lie about stuff.

yeah occasionally its funny plus if you make a drinking game out it you get stupid drunk fast; I also kind of like looking up smuggled foogtage from nk, its amaze balls they're like a mix of 80s 90s and early 20s with like a fucking soviet style back drop behind it. :/ like a vaporwave night mare on crack.

Because military service is mandatory for both sexes in NK, romantic relationships are either forbidden, or don't happen until later in life. That coupled along with how NK is basically just irl 1984 (which in case you don't know, in that book romantic relationships are virtually nonexistence because all love is supposed to be only for Big Brother), I'm going to play devil's advocate, and agree with others in this thread and say that Yeonmi probably just meant romantic love, and not familial love, or love in general.

Furthermore, I'm not familiar with Korean but the English word "love" encompassing all kinds of love is a thing that doesn't really happen with some other languages, so she might've just gotten confused. However, if that was the case, she should've definitely clarified this, and frankly, her lack of complete understanding of English is not a good excuse here. She's been around in Western world long enough to understand the difference by now.

Finally, while I don't consider her a lolcow, and consider most of what she says to be true, I do think she is exaggerating about some things. I don't think she's lying about anything major (I hope), but just the little things like her having a crush on Kim Jong-Un and shit.

"The people have to get out and push the train and it sometimes takes weeks." Look into her association with certfied biggest glowie in the world(7 feet) Enes "Freedom" Kanter.

Both Koreas speak Korean. North Korea's is quite different from South Korea's, but it's still Korean. Unless the word Sarang is only in South Korea's Korean, I'm going to put this under bullshit.
You missed the obvious joke sperg.

The North Korean dialect is similar to how Canadian French uses archaic words when compared to modern French. It's like using early 1900s English in the modern day. You can understand it but it's incorrect in a modern cultural sense.
