She's been through a lot, but it's clear she's feeding some convoluted shit to anyone who wants to hear it. Her stuff is a wild mashup of DPRK insanity that serves to boost the image of ROK and USA. They're believable because some are based on facts, but she takes from other experiences and fictionalized accounts, then cobbles them together into a backstory where her mom dies 90 times while being raped 500, at least. I'm sure she is paid by ROK because they have an agenda to maintain.

I remember her repeatedly saying, in the beginning, that her family was rich for NK standards. I actually remember her debut when she was dressed in regalia and spoke about it in her early 20s. But, as time went on, her accounts were cartoonish compared to other survivor stories, which is easy to digest for people in the ROK and USA that love eating sensationalism. She indulges in the fame and feeds people what they want to believe.

This reminds me of a video I saw a while back, it talks about a woman who makes her money by feeding Guatemalan tourists an obviously false story describing how she survived a volcanic eruption that destroyed her village through divine intervention. The host wraps it up with a monologue about whether it matters what the truth is:
"We're the audience purchasing the product that is that misery. So I guess it doesn't really matter if she’s lying or not. It doesn’t really change the outcome. Everybody here is getting what they want."

Personally, I've never really been a fan of that mindset, it reminds me of the end of the Life of Pi movie where the insurance agent just decides to accept the fantastic tale he's been fed instead of the more mundane and depressing truth, at the end of the day, telling people what they want to hear just leaves them even more poorly informed than usual. The malleability of truth/narrative is one thing but facts speak for themselves. North Korea has enough skeletons that they can't even fit them in the house let alone the closet at this point, the ROK potentially financing multiple grifts like this just gives free legitimate talking points to the North and undermines the South's credibility if those stories ever did gain traction for no real reason when there are so many true stories out there already.

You have to be pretty gullible to believe that wholesale, many dictators across history have had harems, why does Kim's have to be detoothed? There is a grain of truth but her account is heavily embellished. Same with the other clickbait titles included in OP, shoot a guy 90 times in front of every artist? Running out of virgins for his harem? They sound plain ludicrous, and one has to question how she has access to such information now that she's in America.

Also, I don't disagree that North Korea tries to instill love for the state over the family, but it is a huge stretch to go from this to "they have no concept of romantic love". Many North Korean officials, including Kim himself are married. Why don't they just have a communal breeding fuckhouse if they don't know what love is? Even if the specific word for love was outlawed for some braindead reason, people would simply use euphemisms to convey their basic human feelings. After all, isn't it the case that every communist country has failed to deconstruct the nuclear family? Again, grain of truth with plenty of embellishment.

Obviously I have no love for rocket man, but it's hard to take her seriously when other defectors and even her own mother have pointed out multiple inaccuracies with her story. Hell, she even did the classic marry an ugly American and divorce him after you get a green card grift. There are many more credible defectors with their own harrowing stories, I don't see why we have to take Yeonmi Park seriously and pay for her next tit job, this isn't #believeallwomen. If anything, every debunked lie that she tells just obfuscates the truth further and makes it harder for other defectors to be believed.

Just being a party member doesn't mean shit. You can become a party member through the application, long military service, other forms of service, luck, family connections, business connections, or bribery. Only the last two require lots of money and NK is fairly free with granting party membership compared to other communist countries but they don't release actual numbers anymore. From the 90s until recently the rich people weren't simply party members, they were the ascendant middle class getting rich off of the black market. Fortunes change quickly in NK. For her it was because her father was sentenced to hard labor and he wasn't bringing in money anymore and that's when she says they were eating bugs to live. Even if they were wealthy they weren't part of the elite: the elite virtually by definition lives in Pyongyang. By the weird system of NK housing laws, the elite live in Pyongyang and the more elite you are the closer to the city center you are permitted to live. It is not legal to move without permission, which is rarely forthcoming. Her family had also been downgraded because of a family member's crimes.

I suspect she's mixing stuff from other people in with her own to make a more compelling story. "Chanel" bags were relatively cheap because they were counterfeit: they smuggle in the real shit to Nampo and then counterfeit more in a massive industrial area dedicated to counterfeiting shit, but that started in the 2000s and they left before that really got going. Her dad did smuggle clothes from China so maybe that's how the mom could've gotten one but I don't think a garish bag would've gone over well then. Maybe that's how he got caught? But it sounds more like it comes from a story from any of the defectors in the last 15 years.

Her recent stuff is pure grifting, I think. Sad because shit's gone south in NK again over the last few years and even Kim had to admit it wasn't going to get better anytime soon. North Koreans could've used a charismatic and popular advocate.

Didn't she compare life in a North Korean school with struggle sessions and the like to colleges, in terms of free speech, and not life itself? As in she felt similar intimidation being used when speaking out on unpopular topics.
